Description

F. M. PERKINS.
v LUBRlCA-TlNG-DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED IAN.8. 1916.
1,243,213, Patented 0@1.16,1917.
16 f 16 14' ma 7 U INVENTQR WITNESSES ATTORNEY FRANK M. PERKINS, OF MONTICELLO, MINNESOTA.
LUBnicA'rnve DEVICE.
1 243 213 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed January 8, 1916. Serial No. 71,075.
'a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved lubricating device adapted to be secured to the wheel of a vehicle and is designed primarily to provide means whereby hard oil or grease may be supplied to the axle without removing the wheel from the same.
A further object is the provision of a hard oil container adapted to supply lubricant by means of a conductor leading from the container to a point in proximity to the axle, and means carried by the container whereby the lubricant may be forced through the container to supply the axle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and combination of the parts as will hereinafter be described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device shown applied to a wheel.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my lubricating device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of my lubricating device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the axle skein of a wheel having the usual groove 2 provided therein for the reception of lubricant. A hub 3 having an inner lining 4 is associated with the axle and is provided with the usual spokes 5.
As shown to advantage in Fig. 1, a lubricant container 6 adapted by means of its conformation to fit snugly between adjacent spokes as its base 7 engages the outer periphery of the hub. In order to prevent displacement when the wheel is rotated, the container 6 is secured to the spokes by screws 8 adapted to pass through lugs 9 carried by the said container. A nipple 10 having its upper end in threaded engagement with an aperture 11 provided in the base 7 of the container 6 is adapted to enter a radial passage 12 extending through the hub 3 and the lining 4 thereof; the nipple 10 having its lower end terminating in the lining 1 of the hub in close proximity to the axle skein for the purpose of establishing communication between the container and the axle whereby lubricant maybe applied to the axle by means to be hereinafter described.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3 a bolt 13 rotatably mounted in the front wallof the container has its head 14 disposed outside of the container and engaging a shoulder 15 formed on the front wall of the said container. The said bolt 13 extends interiorly of the container and is provided with a threaded shank 16 terminating in a squared portion 17. A leather washer 14' is disposed between the head 14: and the shoulder 15 to prevent leakage of the lubricant. A plate 18 is mounted in the open rear end of the container and is adapted for movement therein through the medium of the bolt 13 whose threaded shank 16 is adapted to pass through a threaded aperture 19 provided in the said plate for the reception thereof. The plate 18 is of the same configuration as the interior of the container, but slightly smaller, and is provided with rounded corners to engage the rounded inner corners of the container. The plate 18 is further provided with a packing member 20 having its outer edges disposed between the edges of the plate 18 and the inner walls of the container in order to prevent the escape of lubricant when the same is under pressure.
The square end of the bolt 13, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, projects beyond the container to provide for the engagement of a wrench therewith whereby the bolt 13 may be rotated in order to move the plate 18 through the medium of its threaded engagement therewith in such a manner as to com press the hard oil or other lubricant contained in the container and force it downwardly through the nipple 10 to supply the axle skein.
It is understood that I do not claim the exact construction shown but reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim The combination with an axle and a wheel including a hub and spokes; of a lubricant container having one end open, means for fastening the container between adjacent spokes, a conductor leading from the container through the hub to a point of discharge in proximity to the axle, a plate mounted in the open end. of the container adapted for movement in the container, and force lubricant through the conductor to 10 a bolt rotatably carried by the container and the axle skein.
having a head disposed eXteriorly of the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature container and a threaded shank extending in presence of two Witnesses.
interiorly of the container and in screw threadedv engagement With the plate, said FRANK PERKINS bolt having a tool receiving terminal eX- Witnesses:
tending beyond the container whereby the Mrs. FRANK PERKINS,
bolt may be rotated to cause the plate to THEODORE SHULTZ.
