Y- ,LIFE-BOAT PROTECTOR.
Be it knownthatl, FRANK Suorrovsirr, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Hoboken, inthe county of yHudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boat Protectors, of which the following is a speciiication'. i 1
This invention useful improvements in life boat protectors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a protector for4 boats such as life boats which are either propelled manually or by a motor, the arrangement being such as to present a bullet shield forwardly of the boat and a torpedo proof inclosure substantially surrounding the boat.
A further object of the device is the arrangement of an adjustably mounted forwardly positioned buffer upon a boat serv# ing as a protection against missiles and oifers but a slight resistance to the travel of the boat, and ready means for adjusting a device being arranged upon the boat.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat provided With the present device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical central sectional view through a portion thereof, parts being illustrated in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional viewv taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 4.
The boat protector herein illustrated is serviceable in the time of war in the protection of smaller boats and ships whereby the projectiles and torpedoes of the enemy will be prevented from hitting and damaging the same. A motor boat 10 is herein illustrated provided with the present device which broadly consists of a metal inclosing screen or cage 11 overlying and substantially surrounding the entire boat eX- cepting the bottom portion thereof.
The cage 11 comprises a top 12 arranged in parallelism above the deck 13 of the boat 10 and may be supported upon the roof of the pilot house 14 if desired while opposite depending sides 15 are carried by the top of the cage terminating forwardly in a bow- Specification of Letters Patent.

The topr of-the cage prevents the boat-from being endangered by bombs from aeroplanes while the sides 15 protect the boat from torpedoes and large projectiles. A buffer form of bullet shield 20 is mounted forwardly of the boat by means of a rearwardly projecting rack 21 carried byl the top 22 of the shield, the said rack being slidably arranged upon the central beam 23 of the cage top 12 being retained thereon by means of overlying straps 24.
The teeth 25 of the rack 21 are arranged within a central longitudinal slot 26 of the said beam 23 and are extended upon the lower face of the buffer top 22 while a gear 27 in constant mesh with the said teeth is j ournaled in brackets 28 depending from the beam 23.
A windlass 29 is arranged upon the boat deck 13 operatively connected by means of a sprocket chain 30 on a sprocket wheel 31 upon the shaft 32 of the gear 27. lt will be understood that by operating the windlass 29 the gear 27 may be turned in the desired direction for longitudinally shifting the rack 21 and the buffer 2O as found desirable either toward or away from the bow of the boat 10.
A spring pressed locking bolt 33 is provided in a housing 34 carried by one of the brackets 28 for engaging within the sockets 35 arranged around the shaft 32, a pull cord 36 being carried by the said bolt 33 for re leasing the same when it is desiredto turn the shaft 32 for shifting the buffer 20.
The use and value of the cage 11 will be apparent from the foregoing description as well as that of the buffer shield 20, it being noted that the shield 2O may be retracted rearwardly to a position substantially inclosing the forward portion of the cage ll-thereby renderingfth'e same 'more fully armored While the buii'er shield may be projected until the 11p-turned flange 38 at the rear end ofthe rack 21 'engages'the rearmost strap 24 and at Whioh'time the buffer is arranged'considerably in advance of the bovv .post-1,6 of thefcage 11.
'A "protector is arranged Whioh renders traveling upon the highseas less dangerous during War times While the same is so arranged as' not'to overweight ,the`- boat Y nor 'to materially affectthe speedlthereof. llI-t'ivill Vhe understood that the lgrating Lof which the cage ll'is composed may be of any vdesired mesh While removable portions 39 may be provided 'at convienientV points.
Vhat Ielaimas neW"is:- Ineombinationrwith a boat, a protector therefor comprising an inolosing cage having a centraltop beamprovided With a lonv-gitudinaly slot, a bullet shield arranged for- Wardly of the cage adapted for overlying the bovvyportion thereof when retracted, a
rearwardly projecting rack carried `by the saidshieldfhavingthe teeth thereof arranged Within said slot7 a gear 1n constant meshv with said teeth *operable*from thefdeok'of i FRANKfs'Uoi-iovsiv.
