To all @050m t mag/concern.'
Be it known rthat I, GEHARTJ. HANSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Buxton, in thev county of Traill and `State yof North I,)akota,A have inventedA certain Vnew and useful Improvements in Door- Hangers, of which the following isa specification. v
This. invention yrelates togdoor hangers and more particularly to an improvement in hangers for sliding. doors and has as its object to provide a deviceA of this class particularlyrdesirable :for use in connection with slidingbarn, stable, or freight-car doors and which( device Vwilluper'nriit of the door being movedbodily outwardlyfrom r structure upon which it is mounted to/ permit'of more readyhsliding vfrom open to permit ,of the door being moved bodily inwardly toward` `the structure so as to The invention further aims V.to/provide' a door hanger of the class above mentioned ,supporting track.
Vto a barn door,v
so constructed that the same may be operated to shift the door outwardly and inwardly without any considerable exertion.
Another aim ofthe invention isto pro- .vide a hanger of this class which may be readily applied to any ordinary barn, stable, or freight-car door or any similar door without alteration of the door structure. and which will also permit of the utilization of ahanger track of the ordinarytype employed in hanging s uch doors.
In the accompanying drawings;
embodying the present inventionv applied Fig. 2 is a detail verticalfsectional view through thehanger, the door being shown in vclosed position ,l I n Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the door in 'open position;
'Fig. 4 is a perspective viewl of one of the hangers removed from the door and the ln the drawings, the numerall indicates one wall Vof a barn, stablehfreight-ear or vuppercorner of the door.
nooJe HANGER`y ing`2`,. thisrdoor being of any ofthe yordinary constructions and being supplied with two or more of the `hanger's .embodying the present invention, which hangers are mounted for travel upon a ,track 4, of the ordinary form, supported by .suitablel brackets 5 upon thel wall of the structurel in position to one side thereof.
The. hangerembodyingthe present invention `comprises two jmembers, .one of which is secured tothe face of the door. 3
and the other member is mountedl upon the .irstmentioned member vfor lsliding move- `I'nent withrelation thereto and s'upports the roller which travels upon thetrac 4, it being understood thatftwo or moremof th`ese Vhangers are mounted upon thedoor to be.
supported, preferably one .adjacent each VThe first-mentioned member i of "fthe hanger,l or .in other words, that member whieh'is secured directly to the door, comprises an attaching plate, which is indicated by the numeral, and this plate is formed with openings 7 for the passage of screws or other suitable securing elements ,81 which serve to secure the member to the face of the door. Theplate 6 carriesy a bracketmember which is preferably formed from a sheet metal blank having a vertically disposed portion .9 4which is riveted orl otherwise secured totheouter face of the plate 6, an intermediate portion'lOVV which extends upwardly and outwardly at an angle from theface of thesaid plate, and a portion 11 whichexten'dsy vertically and in a plane parallel to the portion 9 andV Specification of Letters Patent.- v Patented 0015.9, 1917 Y Applicatio filed-February 20,1917.' t0 the said plate;6, the portionll being locatedv opposite and in spaced.' relation to. fthe upper endy of lthe 'said plate 6, as lclearly'"shownin Figs. 2 vand, 3 of the drawings. Forfa purposeto'be presently eXf Apl'aine'd, two ormore rods 12are arranged in .parallel relation andare secured vat their f ends in the plate6 near the upper end therel of and in theportion 11 of the .bracketl memwill now be described. cludes an oscillatory rod 24 which is sup- K of the hanger.
' blank including a vertically disposed body portion 15 which at its upper end has a p01'- tion extending horizontally inwardly toward the structure'upon which the door 1s mounted and indicated by the numeral 16, the said portion terminating; 1n a downwardly extendingportion 17 spaced from the body vportion 15 and occupyinga plane parallel thereto. 1 The portion 17 and body 'portion 15 have secured therein the ends of Va spindle 18 upon which is rotatably mounted a grooved vroller 19 which Vtravels upon the track 4. The lower end of the body portion 15 of this member of the hanger is bent to extend outwardlyin a horizontal plane, as at 20, and the portion 2O terminates in an upstanding portion 21 occupying a vertical k plane parallel to the body portion 15. The said. 'body portion 15 and the upstanding portion 21 are formed 'with openings suitably spaced and proportioned to slidably lit the rods 12. 1t will now be understood that when the Vhanger'has been positioned with the roller y19 properly engaging the track 4, the door may be moved bodily inwardly 0r outwardly to occupy theposition shown in Fig. 2 or the position shown in .Fig 3 either as may be desired, the rods 12 sliding in a corresponding direction through the openings in the second described member of the hanger. 1n order that this relative movement of the parts maybe accomplished, a shifting means is provided which The said means inported at its ends Vin suitable bearing openingsformed in'the ears 14 of the hanger members on the door, and it 1s preferable that each end of the rod be squared, as at 25, and a finger 26 is fitted on to each squared end of the rod and held in place by means of a set screw 27, The finger 26 extends upwardly through. the slot 13 in the respective door .attached member of the hanger 'and the upper vend of the finger Works in an opening or short slot 2S formed in the portion 20V of the roller carrying member An arm 29 Vis fixedl at one end upon the rod 24 and to the free end of this arm is secured the upper end of a rod 30 which at its lower end is pivotally connected, as at 31, to a hand lever 32 mounted, as at 33, upon the face of the door 3. This lever 32 is provided at its outer end with a handle portion 34 by means of which the lever may be swung downwardly or upwardly, and a suitable keeper device 35 is mounted upon the said face of the door and serves to hold the leve-r in either of its positions of adjustment. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be understood that when the'lever 32 is swung upwardly, as, for example, tothe position shown in Fig. 1, the rod 30 will be correspondingly moved and the rod 24 would be rocked so asto swing the fingers 26 outwardly and in its movement of the fingers the lower members of the hangers, or in other words, the members whichare secured directly to the door, i'
vwill be moved inwardly toward the structure upon which the door is mounted, whereby to correspondingly move the door and cause the same to vcompletely close the' door openingv l `and thus exclude rain, snow, and wind. the` other hand, whenv the lever 32 is swung downwardly, a vdownward pull will beeX- erted upon the rod 30 and the rod24'will` be rocked so as to. swing the fingers 26 inwardly toward the structure andas a result the" lower members of the hangers, orin other words,r the members which support these fingers, will be moved outwardly Afrom the structurev carrying with, them the door 3.
mav be more readily slid into and outy of.V
, closed position;
1n order to prevent the rollers 19 leaving the track 4 the body portion 15 of the upper member of each hanger is'provided with a finger 36 which projects inwardly from the said portion .beneaththe lower edge of the track 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. j
Having thus `described the invention, what is claimedas new is: Y
1. 1n a door hanger, a tracky supported member having a body portionxprovided with an outward extension terminating in an upstanding portion, the said upstanding portion and the portion of the member opposite thereto being formedl with spaced alined openings, a door attached member having spaced portions, spaced rods extending between the said portions of the door attached member and slidably fitting 'throughl yAs a result of such movement ofthe lever theopenings in the track supported member,"
a finger mounted for oscillatoryl movement upon the second-mentioned member and at its ends engaging a socket in thesaid eXtenslon of the first -mentioned member,l and means for rocking the said finge-r.
' 2.' In adoor hanger, a track supported member having spaced portions formed with ber, a member mounted for oscillatory Inovespaced alned openings, a door attaching ment upon'the door attaching member and member having spaced portions, spacedrods vcoacting with a portion of the track sup- 10 extending between the spaced portions of ported member, and means for oscillating the door attaching member and slidably the said member.
