able pipe vise particularly adapted for use by plumbers and like mechanics, and. also to provide a structure which will permit it .to be quickly and easily attached'to a con-v venient support. Another'sobject of the .invention is to provide a double acting mech-. anism for adjusting the position of the grippin'g jaws and for moving same into clamping action when required.-
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 .Fig; 1.
Figure 1is a side elevation of a vise.
Fig.- 2 is aview of the front end of the ise, v I.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line'g3 3' of Fig. 4' is a cross section on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the vise. Fig. 6 is a central, longitudinal section vJ of the vise on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates, in general, thenbase of the'vise;
2 a pair of stationary pivotally mounted jaws; and 3 a movable cooperating pivotally mounted jaw; The base, while forming an integral unit, consists of a pair of interspaced side plates 4' and a pair of end sections 5 and'6. 'Each stationary jaw is offset, as at 7, to' permit the jaw portion to rest on topof the side plates and the lower part of each jaw is extended to form a shank 8 which permits the same to be plvotally secured to the side plates'by means of the bolts9. The movable jaw3-is also offset, as at 10,130 engage the upper face of the side plates 4, and the lower part is provided with a shank extension 11, which is disposed in the space formed between theplates 4. The cooperating faces of both the movable and stationary jaws are provided with teeth,

' such as indicated at 12, and similar'teeth 13 may alsobe formed'in the top faces of the plates 4, as shown. U V a The approximately stationary jaw 2 and the movable or'gripping jaw 3-, each having oppositely extended members 11-and'8, pivoted at a distance apart and behind the jaws,
and the offsets of the jaws being supported" upon the upper faces of the side plates 4, it will be manifest that the jaws being :thus' pivoted and supported are free' to adjust their faces automatically so as to grip any irregular surface or curvature ofthe article i to be held, and while allowing such adjust ment will be preventedbytheoif-set shoulders from being forced downward. The distance of the pivots fromfthe faces of the aws insures'the approximate parallelism'of' the jaws. 1 v
Slidably mounted in the rear-end section of the base, indicated at 5, is a bushing 14,
one end of which is headed,-as at 15, toper- Y mit the insertion of a spring 16 between the 8 head and the base end 5.- Pivotally mounted between the side plates, as at 16, adjacent.
to-the end section 5 and the head 15 formed on the bushing 14, is a lever 17. The lower.
end of this lever is fork-shaped to straddle a screw rod 18, and cam members 19 are formed adjacent to the pivot 16 to engage the headed bushing, as will hereinafter be" described.- n
The screw rod 18 passes freely through the end section 5 of the base andthe bush-' ing14 and also the forked end of the lever.
The inner end of the rod is pivotally secured, by means of a pin 19,=to the rear end of the shank 11, forming a parto'f'the movr able jaw 33, while the outer end ofthescrew rod, projecting throughthe base, isprovided with a nut 20 to permit longitudinal move- .ment of the rod and connected jaw 3.
Pivotally mounted in th'e'forward end of the base, as. at 21, is adownw'ardly extending gripping jaw 22, the inner faceof'which folded or swung about the pivot to assume I the dotted line position, indicated at will hereinafter be described.
The vise here shown is-particularly constructed for the use of plumbers and like* mechanics and, is, therefore, constructed to produce as compact and light a structure as possible.
In operation, if it is desired to use the vise, it is only necessarytolowerthegrip ping jaw 22. The vise as a whole is then, placed on a suitable support and moved inwardly on same until the front edge of the support is engaged by--the lowered jaw 22. This secures the forward end of'the V1863.
and is in many instances sufficient. If it is desired; to further: securethe base, it is only; necessary to drive; a, couple of nails or bolts.
through lugs 25 formed on the near end: of; thebase.
The lever 17;, undeu normal; conditions,
will asume the-positionshowndn Figs. 1 and: 5. This permits; the nut 20 tube-turned; to
