Description
A. BUFFIN ,TYP'E W-RITIYING MACHINE.
ARPL IC ATION FILED MAR. 3|, I916- Patented Oct. 9,1917.
QM MENUS ran snares PATENT OFFIC JOHN A. RUFFIN, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO TH E NOISELESS TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, OF MIDDLETO WN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION NECTIC'UT.
Application filed March 31, 1916. Serial No. 87,938.
This invention relates'to typewriting ma chines, and more particularly to improved type carriers and type sets therefor. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and practical type carrier capable of expeditious adjustment to present alternative type characters for printing.
'Other objects and advantages will be in part noted hereinafter in connection with.
the description of the accompanying drawing, wherein is represented an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there are shown parts of one type action, including a pivoted bell crank lever 1 having its long arm medially pivoted to a floating link 2 at the forward end of which is arranged a leaded weight 3 and the rear end of which is pivoted to the depending arm 4 of a T-lever 5. The bell crank lever 1 and T-lever 5 are both pivoted to a supporting bracket 6 mounted for adjustment on a cross piece 7 of the machine frame.
The opposite end of the T-lever 5 is pivot-- I ally connected with a link 8, in turn connected pivotal-1y to a medial cross member of a longitudinally movable typecarrier 9.
The bell crank lever 1 is adapted for actuation by a key lever of the machine to carry the long arm of the-lever in overlapping alinement to the rear arm of the floating link 2 and toextend the top arm of the T-lever 5 into alinement with the link 8,
thereby forming two straightened toggles v to limit the mov ment of" the type carrier The levers 1 and 5 9 toward the platen. are of duplex form to respectively straddle lever 5 and floating link 2 when actuated, to transmit movement'to the type carrier under controlled speed and pressure.

OF CON TYPE-WRITING MACHINE."
Patented Oct. 9, 1917.
The type carrier 9 is preferably of the skeleton form shown and mounted for reciprocation between a bed plate 10 and a top plate 11, being guided by registering grooves 12 in guide plates 13 and 14. At each end of the type carrier there is provided a set of type characters 15 and 15' faced with three type to print in different case positions-of the shiftable platen. The type pieces 15, 15 are riveted or otherwise solidly fixed to the type'carrier, and are secured thereto in relatively opposite positions. The type'carrier 9' is relatively thin and is freely pivoted to the double arm link 8 by screw pivot 16 so that the type carrier may be swung'when desired and reversed in position to bring the type piece 15 at the opposite end into action for printing. In this manner the type carrier is provided with two separate sets of characters which may be alternatively used when, for eX- ample, one set has become worn or defaced. A further advantage of the structure described resides in its adaptability for print- I ing in different languages, since it will be apparent that one set of English type may be used and one set of characters for a foreign language: The change from one to the other is also readily efiectible, it being necessary merely to remove topplate 11 and swing the type carriers reversely, and then replace the top plate.
The invention is shown-in the drawing as in R rporated in a noiseless typewriter. It is to be understood, however, that certain features thereof are applicable as Well to various other styles of machines.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combina tion, a type carrier having a plurality of sets of oppositely disposed type, a power transmitting member freely pivotedgto said carrier, and spaced guides for said carrier, one of said guides being removable for permitting reversal of said carrier to present selective type to print z 2. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a longitudinally movable skeleton type carrier, a power transmitting link medially connected thereto,.and separate sets of type rigidly secured to opposite ends of said car- .rier for alternative coaction with said platen. 1 3. In a typewriting' machine, a recipro-- cable type carriermounted for movement between supporting and guiding plates, a
plurality of sets of type permanently and rigidly attached to' said type carrier, and
means permitting reversal of said carrier for utilizing either of said sets efi'ect printing. I
In testimony whereof in the presence of of-type to' 10 I afiix my signature, two witnesses. 4 JNo. A, RUFFIN.
