WILLIAM D. REES, OF COLUMBUS OHIO.
' BATH-TUB ATTACHMENT. V r
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented one. 2, 1am.
Application filed August 27, 1915. Serial No. 47,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Runs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath- Tub Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bath tub attachments and comprises essentially a type of structure capable of use with an ordinary bath tub to enable a person to take a sweat bath or Turkish bath, as it is commonly known. v
The main object of my invention, there fore, resides in a peculiar type of shelf structure held suspended within the interior of a bath tub and in spaced relation with its bottom, in order to permit the hot air or steam generated by suitable air heatin apparatus or by hot water which may e confined within the bath tub, to rise about the body of a person supported on said shelf structure. In this connection it may be well to,
state that running water may be resorted to, or the use of an extraneous heating means such as an electrical heating unit may be used to keep the water in a heated and steaming state. It is further essential that this shelf structure be held supported adjacent the top edge of the tub and that it be made of rigid construction to take the place of a slab or the like to facilitate a rub down or a massage.
A further object of my invention resides in a type of structure whereby the same may be folded up into small compass and further be readily transported from place to place when not in use. 1
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and
in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bath tub with my attachment shown in posltion thereon, and,
Fig. 2 is a side view, the major portion of which shows the structure in central section.
In these several views, the bath tub is designated generally by the reference numeral 1 and is of the conventional construction in that the faucet structure 2 is shown adjacent the upper edge of one end and an emergency or overflow outlet 3 is shown directly be-,
neath this faucet structure.
My invention itself consists in the provis1on of a rigid shelf structure formed of a plurality of slats or slabs 4 held in spaced relation upon suitable side rails 5. The shelf structure thus formed is supported from the upper edge of the tub by means ofa plurality of supporting hooks 6, these hooks engaging the curled edge. of the tub and being attached to and extending entirely across the underside of the shelf structure itself. This shelf structure is also provided with a head rest, as is shown at 7, this head rest being so constructed that its upper edge rests on the uper edge of the tub, while it is attached irectly to the shelf structure by means of a plurality of hinges shown at 8. In view of this hinge structure, the head piece may be folded over onto the shelf structure proper when not in use. Similarly, the opposite end ofthe shelf structure is provided with a guard shown at 9 which is suitably connected with the shelf structure and so shaped as to prevent the feet of the user from coming into contact with the faucet structure shown at The manner of using this attachment is as follows: It is placed in its operative position such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 within the tub, and hot water is then permitted to enter the tub. If this water is sufficiently hot to steam, it may be permitted to continue to flow, the over-flow passing out through the emergency outlet 3. The user places himself upon the shelf structure and the generated steam passes up through the spaces formed between the spacedslats 4. If desired, a suitable cover may also be used to be placed over the user to confine this steam. In the absence of water sufficiently hot, additional heating means such asan electric heating unit may be used. After the completion of the bath, the device may be folded up and removed from the tub and because of the hinge structures described, it will occupy a comparatively small amount of space.
What I claim, is:
1. In combination with a bath tub having an overflow outlet, an attachment comprising a rigid shelf structure extending throughout the length of said tub, said structure being provided throughout its area with openings for the passage of steam, and
means for supporting said structure within said tub in spaced relation with its bottom and between the top edge of said tub and its overflow outlet.
2. In combination with a bath tub, an attachment comprising a rigid shelf structure tofit the inside of said tub, means for supporting said structure fromthe top edge of the tub and in spaced relation with its loottom, and a guard piece carriedby said struc- M) :uge arranged to cover the faucets of said In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
