- SIA s rar I e f i FREDERICK-H. MOORE, OIE1 MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
To all whom timay concern: '1
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. MOORE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Melrose,` inf'the county lof Middlesex andV State of lMassachusetts, have invented, new and useful Improvementsl in Paper-Dispensing Holders, of. which the ffollowing is Ia specication. I
. This invention relatesto a holder-adapted to contain aY pack of independent sheets oftoilet or other paper, and t'ov proj-eetl the ysheets one at a'time from the holder.
The inventionhas for its chief object to provide a holderadapted to insure the delivery of only one sheet at atime, and to so support the sheets that, while thek sheet forming the front side of thepack is readily v Figure 1 represents a `side viewV of a` holderv embodying `the invention. y
Fig. 2 represents a section on the line 2-'2 of'Fig. l. V 'f ".Fig. 3! represents a =section on the line 3-3 of-Fig 2.
Fig. 4 represents a tive view showingv the' V-shapedarm, hereinafter described, which supports the paper ack. l p Fig. represents a perspective view off a paper pack adapted; to `engage the abovementioned arm., 1 l r v *Fig V6 .represents a perspective view' of the feed roll and its carrier, hereinafter described, detached from' the casing. l The samejreference characters indicate the sameparts in all of the/figures. v

the box portion l18 4tothe bac The casing is' provided,"nearthe end rep- Y resented lin thedrawings asthe upper end, with means-'for engaging and supporting a pack: 15 composed of superimposed independent sheets of toilet'or other paper, said means being preferably embodied in an arm 16 attached atone end tothe back 12 and projecting" therefromI toward4 the front of the casing." 'Ihefarm "1,6, whichis preferablyof sheet metal', is`V-shaped in cross 'section so that it has a salientfsidefand a'v reentrant;l side, Vthe salient 'side facing up-s' wardly as indicatedvbyFig. 1, andll acting fas a wedge to-split the'upp'er'endportionsiof the sheets of thepack 15 as hereinafter de scribed. j*
"In'one end portion ofther pack I have formed a V-shaped 4slot 17 Fig. n5, eXtendingf'through the 'pack from' front to rear, the vsalient side of the .slot being relatively nearoneiendof the packso that one endportion of each'sheet is ladapted to be split by thearm 16..
' *The pack Ais vengaged'with theA arm 16 while'the box portionjl is displaced, the
main portion of thefpackextending downf 'Y wardly from said arm, and the rea'r side of the pack being'supported by theback 12. The lower end of the box portion 13 is provided with a delivering- "outlet- 1 8 l through which the sheets may be projected one at ak time. Saidoutlet is preferably at the frontsideof the portion 13, and the .back 12-is`preferably p rovided'with an inclined 'deflecting .plate V 19 'which deiiectS thelower portiony of the'p'ack to the 18, as indicated Vby Figs."1"and 3. i
`Located within.V and hinged tothe outlet bex portion'l is a feed 'roll carrier .composed .of v Y two swinging arms 20 andneck portion 21 connectingsaid'arms: fThe.hingepconnec-` ,t p
tion between thecarri'erand 'theportion '13 is preferably providedjb'ya :shaft 22journa-led in bearings inl oppositesides ofy the portion 13 andyprovided at one of itslprojectingl ends with afknoby or handle Y23 located" outside Vof the casingl wherebyV the shaft may be rotated. Said lshaft passes loosely throughtorices in the arms 20,`and. the outer Aend portions'of said arms at one side oftheshaft are longer than the inner end portions at thev oppositer side,`so that tating the feed roll and thus causing it to pull the front sheet of the pack away from the arm 16 and project said sheet through the outlet 18, the pull exerted on the front sheet by the frictional drag of the feed roll causing the wedge-shapedarm 16 to split the upper end portion of the sheet and thus detach it from the arm.
I prefer, as` the means for Vrotating the feed roll, a sprocket wheel 27'attached to the shaft 22, a sprocket wheel 28 attached tothe shaft of the roll 24, and a sprocket chain 29 connecting the wheels 27 and 28. 1f desired, however, the shaft 25 of the feed roll may be extended through a slotBO in one side of the box portion 13 and provided with a suitable operating knob or handle, so that the roll may be rotated by a force applied .directly to it instead of being applied indirectly through the sprocket wheel and chain above described. I prefer the firstdescribed means for rotating 4the roll, however, because` the roll rotated by said means cannot be pressed against the pack by any force except gravity, so that it is impossible for the operator to exert sufficient forcev to cause the detachment of more than one sheet at a time from the pack.
Thev V- or wedge-shaped arm 16 coperates with the pack having the V-shaped slot 17 in insuring the detachment of only one sheet at a time, said armpresenting a Wide bearing for the upper side of the slot 17 which is sufficient to prevent an inner sheet from being split by the frictional drag of the outer sheet upon-it. The described form of the arm 16 and its widebearing on the edges of the slot 17 in the pack, enable a single` arm to firmly support a pack and prevent it from swingingr edgewise.
Backward rotation of the feed roll 241; may be prevented by a ratchet 32 attached to the roll and a pawl 33 attached to the carrier andV engaging said ratchet.
The` box portion 13 may be provided with a sight opening 311 exposing a portion of one edge of the pack 15 and enabling the operator to. determine when the packV has been entirely removed.
What I. claim is 1. A dispensing holder for paper sheets, comprising ak casing having internal means at one end for engaging one end portion of a pack of sheets, a back arrangedl to support the inner side of said pack and a delivering outlet at the opposite end, a roll carrier pivoted in said casing and composed of a pair of parallel arms and a connecting neck, va hinge connection between said carrier and the casing, permitting the outer end portions of t-he arms to swing by their own weight toward the back of the casing, and a feed roll journaled in the outer end portions of the arms and pressed by its own weight and by the weight of the-saidy arm portions toward the back of the casing and against .the front side ofthe pack therein, means being provided for'V rotating` saidl roll. and thereby projecting the f-ront sheetv of th pack through said outlet.v Y- Y Y 2. front side ofay pack therein, and connections between the said shafty and roll whereby rotary movement may beimparted from'the shaft to the roll without increasing thezpressure of the roll onthe pack, toproject the front sheet of the pack through said outlet.
3. A dispensing holder for paper sheets, comprising a casing having internalmeans at one end for engaging oneend portion ofa pack of sheets, a back arranged to support the inner side of said pack, and a delivering outlet at the opposite end, a rolly carrier within said casing including arms and a con:- necting neck, a shaft journaled in the sides ofthe casing near the front thereof and engaged with said carrier topermit. thev arms thereof to `swing by gravityV toward theback of the casing, said shaft being provided-with an external operating handlev and with a sprocket; wheel located wtihin the casing, a feed roll journaled insaidlarms and pressed by gravity against the front side of said pack, said roll being provided with a sprocket wheel, and a chain connecting the sprocket wheels of the shaft and roll.
