` Roon-FRAMING SQUARE.'-
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RowLAND HILL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Roof- Framing Squares, of which the following is a specification.
rThe invention relates to a framing square, and more particularly to the class of roof framing squares, for use by carpenters, mechanics, or any other persons.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a square of this character, wherein the work of framing a roof is materially simplified by the use of the square,
'and any person unskilled in this particular art can readily and conveniently accomplish the work with success. y
Another object of the invention is the provision of a square of Vthis character,
wherein the obverse and reverse sides thereof are marked or otherwise with scales,
which vpermits the use of an ordinary bevel square for ascertaining with accuracy the side cut of hip and valley rafters, plumbcuts, side bevels and pitch of hip, jack, vcripple and common rafters, and the length per foot for the hip, valley, and common and jack rafters, for the framing of a roof with despatch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a square of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, capable of being placed upon any straight edge tool, strongdurablc, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended. i
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a square constructed in accordance `with the invention.
Fig. 2, is a'view similar to Fig. 1, looking toward the opposite side.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, in detail, the square comprises a body A, preferably made Specication of Letters Patent.

from steel,v although ity may be lmade from any other rigid and durable material, hav- ,ing long and short limbs or - arms 5 and 6,
respectively, arranged at right angles to each other. Marked by stamping or etching on opposite faces of the body A, at the outer` f and inner edges of both limbs or arms 5 and 6, thereof are longitudinally disposed scales, as at B, the yscales at the outer edge of the longer limb or arm 5, having a range from 1 to 16 inches, and it is marked accordingly, although this limb or arm can be of any desired length with a Scale corresponding thereto, while the scales at the inner edge of the-longer limb or arm range from 1 to 14 inches, and it is marked accordingly.
The scales on the outer edge of the shorter limb or arm 6, have a range of from 1 to 12, inches, and it is marked accordingly, while the scales 'at the inner edge of this limb or arm range from 1 to 10, inches, and it is marked accordingly, yet this limb or arm can be of any other desirable length, should the occasion require.
pitch range from 3 to 12 inches, while onv the same face of said limb or arm and in the space between the outer and inner scales of the longer limb or arm 5, are angularly disposed marks or lines 8, indicative pitch, plumb-cuts, side bevels and length per foot run for hips and valley rafters.
Within the space between the scales on the other side and at the inner and outer edges of the shorter limb or arm 6, are digits and fractions thereof, as at 9, indicative of the difference in length of jack and cripple rafters, while on the same face ofthe body between the scales on the longer limb or arm 5, are angularly or diagonally disposed marks or lines 10, indicative of plumb-cuts, bevels and length per foot run for common and jack rafters.
What is claimed A square having a long and a short arm, the outer edge of the longer arm being calibrated to measure oft1 16- inches while the outer edge of the shorter arm is calibrated to measure off 12 inches, said inches being designated upon said square and run in opposite directions from the outer corner thereof, each side of the square being similarly calibrated into inches and similarly designated, one side of the longer arm of said square being inscribed with a series of diagonal lines terminating at the graduations designated 3 to 12 inclusive, said last-named arm being` also ,inscribed with a designated series of values opposite same representing the length per foot run of ljacki'afters, etc.7 the other side of the longer arm o'f said square having a similar series ofdiagonal lines inscribed thereupon also joining the numeral 3 to l2 and having oppositethesame a desig nated series of values representing lthe plumb cuts oiiribs and valleysfetc., and of the diagonal lines on the rst mentioned 4on the opposite side of said arm represent the hypotenuse of a triangle Whose-leg is 16 inches long.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
