LOCK.
APPLICATION ULY 3.1916. 1,241,754. Patented Oct. 2,1917.
I WITNESSES INVEN TOR.
a ran era r aannr @FFICE.
HARRY MOLDEN', OF SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO SARGENT & COMB-ANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Application filed July 3, 1916.
'1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY MoLnnN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Sydney, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to locks, and more particularly to those used on lockers, cupboards and the like, where a swinging catch is adapted to engage the dooror door jamb.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a locker lock in which the catch or other swinging element is adapted to be actuated by a pin tumbler lock in an improved manner, the construction being such that the key cannot be removed from the look while -the latter remains in the unlocked position.
It is aimed also to provide a very simple lock construction which is readily reversible so that it can be applied to a right hand door or a left hand door, as may be required.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. l I
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lock em bodying my improvements, showing it applied to the door of a locker;
F ig. 2 is a rear view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 with the swinging catch in the locking position;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of F ig. 2;
Fig. t is a section on line I- l of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a section on line of Fig. 4, showing the position of 'the parts when the door is locked; and
Fig. 6 is a VieWsimilar to Fig. 5, showingthe position of the parts when the catch is in the unlocking position.
My improved locker lock consists primarily of two main parts: first, a pin tumbler cylinder lock or equivalent lock having a rotary key rod; and second, a swinging arm or catch for locking the door to the door jamb, adapted to be actuated by the key rod and having a suitable mounting. In the drawing, the lock 10 is shown as being of the usual rim cylinder type having the customary key plug 11 and pin tumblers 12. A key rod 13 attached to the rear end of the key plug 11 is adapted to engage a swinging catch or arm 14 mounted on a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Serial No. 107,277.
The mounting plate 15 is provided heneath the catch or arm 11 with a stop 19.
Thus, when the proper key is inserted into the lock 12 to release the key plug and the catch 14-, the latter can only be turned in one direction, viz., an upward direction. This moves the catch to the releasing position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. raising the catch to this position, the door jamb is disengaged and obviously the door can be readily pulled open. As the catch or arm 14 reaches this upright position, a shoulder 20011 a cap or washer 21 attached to the rear end of the key plug engages a stop 22 projecting rcarwardly from the lock '12 so as to prevent further movement of the catchmember. In this manner, the movement of the catch member is limited to a quarter rotation.
I'Vhen the key plug occupies the normal locking position with the pin tumblers in line with the tumbler sockets, the catch member occupies the locking position. Thus, when the key is inserted and turned to move the catch member a quarter turn to the releasing position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, it will be impossible to withdraw the key. In order to withdraw the key from the lock, it is necessary to return the key plug to the initial position, wherein the turnblers aline with the tumbler sockets, and
hence it will be understood that with my lock construction it will be impossible for a person to leave the catch inthe inoperagive position without leaving his key in the oor.
When the lock is to be applied to a door of opposite hand, or one swinging in the opposite direction, the cylinder lock 12 is properly positioned, and the catch 14 is swung into abutment with another stop 23 carried by'the lower part of the plate 15 in line with the stop 19, but at the opposite side. The catch 14: is then slipped over the key rod 13, and the plate 15 applied to the inner face of the door. In this case, the upward movement of the catch member incident to the unlocking of the lock is limited by a shoulder 24 on the washer 21 which is located at one'hundred and eighty degrees from the shoulder 20, and which is adapted to cooperate'with the stop lug 22 on the cylinder in an obvious manner.
It will be observed that the stop shoulders 24, 20 in connection with the stop lug 22 on the cylinder only permit the key rod to be turned through one hundred and eighty degrees relatively to the cylinder, and similarly the stops 19, 23 prevent the catch member 14 from turning more than one hundred and eighty degrees relatively to the mounting plate.
In the particular form shown, two screws 24?, connect the mounting plate with lateral. lugs 25 on the cylinder, as usual in night latch construction, and a screw 26 passes through the mounting plate into the wood of the door.
While I have described the look as applied to amovable door member adapted to cooperate with a fixed jamb, the parts may be reversed, so that the lock is carried by a fixed member 'and'cooperates with a movable member. Furthermore, the lock may be used for other purposes than those herein described.
I have not attempted to describe the modifications of the construction which may be adopted without departing from the scope of the invention.
