Be it known that we, EDWIN W. WEBB and CHARLES S. WALTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countyv of Cook and State of Illinois, certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to b e a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same. l Our` invention relates to improvements in car trucks, and particularly to six wheeled equalizing car trucks of the type disclosed and broadly claimed in our co-pending application, `entitled Car trucks, filed August 12, 1916, under S. N. 114,556. l
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figui-e 1 is a view, principally in side elevation, of the improved car truck with some parts shown in vertical section and some parts diagrammatically illustrated by means of broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 2-2 o Fig. 1;
Fig 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 3 3- of Fig. 1, with some parts removed; and j Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of the improved car truck.
Each side frame of the improved car truck is indicated by the numeral 1 and, as shown, is of cast steel with a general cross section in the form of a box, the walls of which are suitably reinforced. The upper sections of two-part `depending pedestals 2 are cast integral with the side frames 1 and the lower sections thereof are detachably, but rigidly secured to said upper sections by nut-equipped bolts 3. The lower extremities of each pair of pedestals 2 are rigidly connected by a tie bar 1l. i These tie bars 4; are detachably secured to the pedestals 2 by nut-equipped ybolts 5 and the ends thereof are bent upward and engage the outer faces of the pedestals to prevent lateral separation thereof. Chafing plates 6 extend substanhave invented termediate pair of pedestals 2, and a spring seat 8 is formed in the side frame 1, directly below each bolster opening 7. The walls of the side frame 1, between each pair of pedestals 2, are extended downward to a'll'ord relatively deep pairs of flanges 9 at the ends of the spring seats 8. I'loi'izontally spaced pairs of spacing tliiinbles and bolts 10 connect each pair of flanges 9 at their lower extremities. In each end of the side frame 1, is a transverse segmental seat l1 formed in the top member of the side frame for a rocking abutment. Over each pair of pedestals 2, is formed in the side frame 1 a horizontally elongated opening 12, the purpose of which will presently appear.y
The car truck wheels and their axles are indicated by the numeral 13. and the journal boxes therefor are indicated as entireties by the numeral 14, with the exception of rectangular bearing seats 15 formed in the tops thereof. The journal boxes 14 may be of any desired form, are mounted between the pedestals 2, and have on their sides the customary pedestal guides.
The side frames 1 are rigidly connected by two pairs of angle tie bars 16 having their horizontal flanges turned toward each other and the ends thereof rest on brackets 17 to which they are riveted. These brackets 17 are cast integral with the inner flanges 9 and project inward therefrom. The vertical flanges of each pair of tie bars 16 are turned upward and their horizontal flanges are edgewise spaced apart to permit the escape of dust and dirt therebetween.
The bolster of the improved car truck is of the double type and, as shown, is made up of a center beam 18, outer beams 19 and tie I-beam 20. The bolster beams 19 are located directly over each pair of tie bars 16, extend between the `verticalflanges thereof and have their ends inserted through the bolster opening` 7. Roller contours 21 are formed on the under faces of the bolster beams 19 and rest on lateral motion rollers 22. These rollers 22. in turn, are mounted in roller contours 23 formed in roller bases 24, seated on the bottoms of the bolster openings 7. On the sides of the bolster bea-ms 19, are stop lugs 25 arranged to engage the inner faces of the side frames l to limitthe lateral movement of the bolster. The side frames l are supported on heavy semi-elliptical springs 35 which, in turn, are supported by links 36 from the inner ends ofthe outer equalizing levers 28 and the intermediate equalizing levers 28. The links 36 are flat and are extended through the apertures 30 in the inner ends of the outer equalizing levers 2S and the intermediate equalizing levers 28..- Fulcrum lugs in the form of keys, are extended transversely through the links 36 at the ends thereof. 4. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, a bolster' and journal boxes, of equalizing levers intermediately fulcrumed on the journal boxes, rocking abutments between the outer ends oit' the equalizing levers and side frames, and springs carried by the inner ends of the equalizing levers and supporting the side frames under the bolster.
5. In a ear truck, the combination with side iframes having bolster openings and pairs of laterally spaced flanges therebelow, a bolster having its ends extending into the bolster openings and spring seats under the bolster and between said flanges, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, and leaf springs mounted in said seats and having their ends supported 'from the equalizing levers.
6. In a car truck, the combination with side frames having bolster openings and pairs of laterally spaced flanges therebelow, a bolster having its ends extending into the bolster openings and spring seats under the bolster and between said flanges, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, leaf springs mounted in said seats and having their ends supported from the equalizing levers, and spacing devices connecting the pairs of flanges below the springs.
7. In a ear truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, said side 'frames having bolster openings and depending flanges, spring seats between said flanges, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, and leaf springs mounted in said seats and having their ends supported from the equalizing levers.
8. In a ear truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, said side frames having bolster openings and depending flanges, spring seats between said flanges, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the equalizing levers and side frames, leaf springs mounted in said seats and having their ends supported `from the equalizing levers, and lateral motion bearing devices in the bolster openings.
9. In a six Wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames, journal boxes and a double bolster, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, abutments between the outer ends of the outer equalizing levers and side frames, and leaf springs supported from the inner ends of the outer equalizing levers and the intermediate equalizing levers and supporting the side frames directly under the double bolster.
10. In a six wheeled ear truck, the combination with journal boxes and a double bolster, of equalizing levers intermediately fulerumed on the journal boxes, rocking abutments between the outer ends of the outer equalizing levers and side frames, and leaf springs supported from the inner ends of the outer equalizing levers and the intermediate equalizing levers and supporting the side frames directly under the double bolster.
