COftl#y TOBACCO AND MATCH BOX.
menate.,
To alt 'whom t maycoacem: p
Be it known that I, CHARLES BURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bardane, in the county' of J eiferson and State .of West Virginia, have invented certain useful Improvements in Combination Tobacco and Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in combination tobacco and match boxes, one object of the invention being the provision of a tobacco box carrying in the lid thereof a novel arrangement of match ybox and striker which will place' at the command of the smoker matches and also a striker in such a location as to permit 'of the easy ignition of the match without the danger of the wind blowing out the same.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is thoroughly eilicient and practical in use.`
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the omplete box with the lid open showing the match receptacle.
Fig. 2 vis a longitudinal sectional view through the cover and match box.
Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the box proper for the tobacco, the upper edge of which is cut away as at 6 and is provided with the hinging ferrules or sleeves 7 for the reception of the hinging rod 8 which fits in the sleeves or ferrules 9 of the lid or cover 10.
Mounted by an adhesive or other means within the cover is the match box or receptacle 11 which is preferably made from a piece of abrasive paper, as for instance sand paper, and is folded to provide the attaching flap 12 and the front section 13, with the side wall portions 14 folded and adhesively attached to the iap. The abrasive surface is so arranged as to be upon the exterior' and thus be exposed, while the smooth face is upon the inside lof the box for receiving the matches and reducing the danger of accidental ignition thereor. y

Application filed May 3, 1916. Serial No. 95,149.
rIhis box as shown is of lesser length than the lid so that the matches may be readily inserted therein and extracted therefrom,
tacle and striking device is providedwith each tobacco box so that the smoker has at hand the matches and the means for striking the same, and as the lid is hinged to the box the same may be opened and the lid and box proper be used as a wind shield when lighting the pipe or cigarette.
What I claim as new is In a device of the class described in combination a can, a lid adapted to close said can andhaving four flanges, said lid being hingedly mounted on 'one edge of said can, a match striker formed entirely from a sheet of sand paper, said sheet of sand paper having folded sides adapted to form a box of lesser length and width with respect to the length and width of'said cover,
the base portions of said box having their rough surface adhesigely secured to the bottom of said cover so as to have an outer smooth .surface forming the bottom of said box and whereupon the sides of said box are spaced from the side flanges of the cover to allow theflanges of the cover to engage the sides of the can, said box receiving a series of looselyarranged matches and being of a lesser length with respect to the latter so that portions of said matches may project outside of the box and be also spaced apart from the adjacent transverse flange of said cover so as to rovide a space in which said matches may e manipulated for removal by a sliding movement upon the bottom of the lid, the outer exposed or top ide of said box having a sand paper surace.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
