Be it known that we, J CHN' D. MORGAN, of Summit7 New Jersey, and LoUis A. HAW- THORNE, of Newark, N. J., citizens of the United Sta-tes, have made Improvementspin Metal-lVoi-king Machines,v of'which the following is a specification.
The invention rela'testo machines for punching' structural shapes and' like work, and incre particularly to machinesf'or traveling and successively vstopping 'the vshape in position to be punched at the desired points, through'the instrumentality of settable and automatically operating distance determining devices, and relates further to novel means and mechanismsfor rapid and precise alternate traveling'and stopping'of the work so that the holes may be'punched therein with great `rapidity and accuracy and at any desired distancesapart from fractions of an inch to many feet. Further objects of the invention will be set' forth in part hereinafter and in part; will be obvious herefrom.

y In the particular form of progressing meansembodied herein, the beam or shape .r is urged or impelled forward by the rotation* of the rolls 1 and is permitted to so move forward or is restrained from so doing by the' action of af suitable distance determining means, although the invention in many of' its aspects maybe employed with other forms of-beam onshape progressing means. The embodied formof means acting directly to permit and prevent the progressing of the shape a@ land the consequent positioning thereof relative to the tool equipped meanscomprisesa head 1'5 having connections to the distance determining means, the forward-'end of' the beam pressying againstJ the head 15 and thusremaining in consta-nt relation or contact therewith. The distance determining means engages with the rail or bar 16 to accurately position the Work?, relatively to the punching mechanism. The present embodiment of the invention Will be regarded as arranged to operate for feet, inches and siXteenths-of-an-inch.
In accordance Withcertain featuresA of the invention, distance determining devices operating alternately and successively are employed, one such device serving to kposition the shapeffor one'punching, and vthe -other device positioning the shape lfor then'ext successive punching, thus the one device may be setting or set to position the shape While thev other device vis recovering or returning preparatory to its next setting. This vvill save a great dealof time and result 'm an yincrease of speed and aconsequent increase in product. In accordance with certain features ofthe invention suchmechani's'm or means is designed to operate With or be controlled by a distance vrecord sheet or like device, that is, va sheet in which the distance values for successive punchingsfare preliminarily l marked or indicated, the machine recognizing the successive distancevalues so marked and' indicated, and positioningthe In thek embodied form, i v the invention are applied to or included in a distance determining mechanism wherein a member, such as the rail o r bar16, traveling .with the shapeor' beam is provided vvith engagingdevices spaced apart in distances 4equal tothe larger distance values or denominations and an interponentfor stop is `projected into the path .of ,travel of suchengaging" devices at such time as to engage a particular one of said engaging devices to permit of the `right distance or amount of travel of the Work corresponding tothe pari -ticular setting or reading of the distance determining means. Referring novv more particularly to the embodied vform ,l and considering primarily at this time a single distance determining device,.and. also considering the means. for
4varying the longitudinal position or location of the. interponent alongthe path of travel ofthe engageable member, the rail or bar 16 (see Figs. 1 and is provided on its upper surface with lugs 20 which are a uniform and predetermined distance apart ypreferably one yfoot apart from the engaging face on one lug to the engaging face on the next lug. The bar 16 slides along and is supported by suitable bearings 21 in the machine frame, and it may rest or ride upon lsuitable rollers or other friction reducing bearings (not shown).
Mounted upon the 'machine frame, or otherwise secured in fixed position relatively to the punching means or other i tool equippedv means, is a ixedbearing face 22. Mounted upon suitable supports is a fixed yor supporting shaft 23, shown With its ends bearing on supports 24fand 25. A dovvel pin 26 'keeps the shaft 23v from rotation.
`Rotatably mounted upon the shaft 23 is a cylinder 27 which isvrotatable in proportion or conformity to the desired distance setting, to varyl the longitudinal position of the interponent Which engages the 'selected lug 20 at each distance setting. The left hand end of shaft23 in Fig.l 3is squaredor other- Wise shaped to preserve the'interponent carrier 28 in Verect or fixed position thereon,

Suitable means are provided 'for causing the interponent carrier to vary its longitudinal position in conformity to the rotation yof the cylinder 27. For this purposefthe left hand end of the cylinder 27 in Fig.' 3 is provided With an inclined or, graduatetd cam face129 against Which the surface 30 of inheld in retracted position bylaspring 32 and as being projectable intoV engaging position by a' solenoid 33 mounted in the interponent carrier 28.v The interponent 31 is connected The Winding of the solenoid is connected by suitable circuits to the settable devices such as al distance record sheet and a'suitable timing mechanism.
Meansy are provided for causing the Ainterponent carrier to follow the cam surface 29 of the positioning cylinder 27, and as embodied, such means comprises a. groove cam 36 on the interior surface of the cylinder 27. Into this groove cam 36 projects a finger 38, which is carried on a rod 39. The rod'39 islongitudinally slidable in an aperture l0l in the interponent carrier28. The

rod 89 is acted on by a spring 41, which is'in compression between the interponent carrier and a nut 42 threaded on the rod 39. Thus the interponent carrier will follow the cylinder 27 during'the restoring movement and also during the setting movement and will avoid slamming or loose movement and the consequent shock when the interponent engages the lug for which it is set.
In the embodied formv of means for rotating and stopping the cylinder 27 means are provided which tend to continuously rotate the cylinder, the embodied rform thereof comprising-an annular series .of'gearteeth 50 formed in the outer wall of the cylinder 27. -Meshing with said gear teeth 50 is a pinion 5l, which is loose upon a shaft 52, but having a spring operated friction clutch In the embodied form of clutch connection, the pinion 51 on one side faces upon a collar 53, and upon its opposite side the pinion 5l faces a collar 54 loose upon shaft 52. The collar 54 is acted upon by a spring `55 coiled about shaft 52 and in compression between the collar 54 and a collar 56 fixed on the shaft 52. The shaft 52 is carried in suitable bearings 57 and 58v formed on the supporting pillars or brackets 59 and 60. The shaft 52 has fixed thereto a sprocket wheel 61 over rwhich passes a sprocket chain.` 62 said chain running also over a sprocket wheelr 63 fixed on the shaft of a motor 64.
The embodied form of means for permitting or preventing rotation of the cylinder 27 and setting itv for dierent desired distances includes arcuate grooves 66 formed in the exterior wall of the cylinder 27, and of such length and position as to give or permit the desired amount of rotary movement to the cylinder. Coperating with the respective grooves 66 are corresponding rows or series 67 of pins which are projectable into and retractable from the grooves 66. These pins are automatically` controlled and preferably are controlled by a distance record'. device through suitable means such as corresponding series of solenoids 68. Each of the pins 67 as shown isheld in retracted position byl spring 69, the solenoids 68 when energized acting to set or projectr the corresponding pin into the slot; The solenoids may be in circuitv with'asuitable automatic dist-ance record device 14C-to eEect the successive settings of the cylinder. The initial position ofthe cylinder when it is restored or returned may be effected or determined by a solenoidv operating in the manner described, or in the reverse manner, or by a suitable spring device, or other like means employed for this purpose.
In the embodiedy form a further movement of the cylinder 27 is eifected after the pin 67 representing the-desired distancedenomination, such as one or more inches, has been projected into its corresponding groove 66 and has reached the stopping position at the end of the groove. Such further rot'ation or movement 'is'imparted tol the cylinder 27 to set the interponent for the sixteenthsof-an-inch, and in accordance with onefeature of the invention this is effected by also moving the pin or pins 67 together with the cylinder 27. In the embodied form,` the pins 67 reciprocate in apertures in a plate '80, of partiallycylindrical fornr andt conforming substantially to the surface ofthe cylinder 27. rIhe plate 80 is fixedy to the member 8l, which has aA bearing surface S2, against which bearingl surface the end of the cylinder 27 bears, the member Sl having also a bearing surface 83, which bears on the stationary surface 22. The member 8O lis mounted or journaled on the shaft 23 andl is in fxed'position longitudinally ofthe shaft and has a partial swinging or rotative movement about the shaft. In the embodied form, the pins 67 effect the setting in. inches, and the member' 8l is permitted sufficient swinging movement toy effect the setting* for the additional sixteenths. For the purpose of effecting this setting there are formed in the cylindrical surface. of the member 8l, a series of apertures 85 which are positioned and proportioned to effect the corresponding additional feed for thev sixteenths-of-aninch. Proj eotable into and retractable from the apertures 85 are a series of pins 86, which are impelled retractably byl springs 87, and are projected into their apertures selectively by solenoids 88,-in like or similar manner with the solenoids'68'previously'described. The-pins 86 andir solenoids 88 are carried upon a plate 89 fixed to the support or pillar upon which the bearing surface 62 isborne.
The manner of operation of the device may be'generally stated asfollows:-
The proper solenoid 68 andl the proper solenoid 8S for the desired number of inches and sixteenths having*` been selected* and energized the so-called Z'erofpin or like device will release the cylinder 27, which thereupon will begin to rotate by reason of the driving of pinion 51. l/Vhen the set pin-69 reaches the' end ofl its4 slot inthe corresponding groove 66, the plate SOand pin 69'will then rotate with cylinder 27 to effect the feeding or setting' for the additional sixteenthsover the integral' inch, the member 81 having likewise been released from its detentl and freetomove' for a distance determined by the set pin`86.4 During the rotation of the cylinderv 27, the finger 38 following the caml groove 36 causes the detent carrier.28 toinove longitudinally of shaft 23 a corresponding numberof inches and sixteenths-of-anLinch. In accordance with certain features of the invention, as already indicated, a plurality of distance determining devices are alternately operated, and such arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings and diagrammatically in Fig. 10 although it will be understood that the invention in lmany of its aspects is applicable toa single distance determining device operating alone, `or a plurality of such devices operating together.
In the embodied form of plural or alternate operation, each mechanism may be substantially alike, so far as its principal features of construction and operation are concerned. In the two devices shown, the cylinders 27 are shown oppositely disposed, as will be clear from Figs. 1 and 6, whereby with the use of one common drive therefor, one cylinder can be making a setting while the other is restoring for a succeeding set` ting, the consequent over-lapping of the times in the cycle operation of the respective devices, effecting a great saving of time and consequent increase of product. y In accordance with one feature of the invention, means are provided whereby the controlling circuit for two distance determining devices are successively cut in and cut out so that upon successive settings only one series of solenoids or'other controlling devices is energized or set while the other device is restoring preparatory for a new setting. In Fig. 10 of the drawings a distance record sheet`140 is shown having cooperating 4sets of contacts 141, 142 which are permitted to close their respective circuits by the occurrence ofproperly located perforations in the sheet 140 v(the contacts being held apart by the sheet and the circuits remaining open when the perforations do not occur). Thus by the automatic feed of the distance record sheet the successive distance settings are effected.
