To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE P. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal- Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for operating upon metal shapes and more particularly to machines for punching metal shapes automatically in the work of fabrication.
Objects of the invention are to provide for automatic handling of the shape and automatically and accurately positioning the shape relatively to the tool equipped means to be operated upon thereby; to so handle shapes of large dimensions and great weight with the accuracy necessary in first class work; to provide all necessary cooperation between the spaced determining devices, the
shape progressing means, and the driving means whereby the shape is progressed and stopped within the limits of accuracy required in such work to be operated upon by the tool equipped means; to provide for automatic repetition of space designations in the positionin 'of the shape relatively to the tool equippecf means; to provide driving means and connections therefrom to the shape progressing means particularly adapted for handling work of large dimensions and heavy weight and stopping same accurately; to provide connections between the shape progressing means and the distance indicating and controlling devices whereby the work is accurately positioned automatically to be operated upon by the tool; to provide particular form of mechanism especially adapted for the work to be performed. These and other objects of invention will be in part more fully'set forth hereinafter, and will in part be obvious to those skilled in the art.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.- Y
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein, and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings illustrating by way of example one embodiment of the invention, the shape progressing means are shown in a general way at 1, said means being adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined relation or relations and to progress same relatively to the tool equipped means and to bring it to rest relative to the tool equipped means in any one of a plurality of positions automatically, in order that a desired operation may be performed by the tool equipped means upon the progressed shape accurately at the place on the shape desired.-. "Such shape progressing means may vary in its construction, and in the illustrated form thereof, a shape a: is shown. in the form of an I-beam firmlyheld against a head 2, which head is -1naintained in a definite relation to the space indicating and controlling devices to control the position of the progressed shape w relatively to the tool equipped means. In the embodied form, the head 2 is connected to rack bars 3 and 4 which travel along the series of rollers 5 and 6. The shape 00 is held to the head 2 by suitable means, and in the drawings herewith a follower 7 is shown for this purpose. The rack bars 3 and 4 mesh with gears 8 and 9, mounted on shafts 10 and 11, respectively. The shafts 10 and 11 have worm wheels 12 and 13 meshing respectively with worms 14 and 15 upon a shaft 16.
The shaft 16 is shown in the present embodiment as cooperating with both the space indicating and controlling devices and with the driving means, as will hereinafter, be more. fully described. The illustrated form of shape progressing means, excepting the connections to the driving means and the space indicating means, are of the general form shown in myv U. S. Patent No. 1,075,491, and it will be further understood that other forms of shape progressing means may be employed.
- The tool equipped means are located at a definite point along the path of travel of the shape progressing means, and in the particular form of such means illustrated a general support or housing 20 is provided therefor, the general location of the tool equipped means being at y in Fig. 1. A form of tool equipped means is shown in Fig. 8 which will be described more in detail at a later point. It will be seen that as the work a: is progressed along its path of travel, it may be 'stopped and positioned at a plurality of points in order to be operated on by the tool equipped means, the space indicating and controlling means and the driving means cooperating to accurately position the work for this purpose within the limits of the commercial requirements of accuracy.
The space indicating and controlling devices comprise members movable along a path in definite relation to the travel of the work at relatively to the tool equipped means, and a plurality of settable devices cooperating with said members respectively at, various points in their travel, said devices controlling the action of the driving means upon the work x. The connections between the space controlling devices and the work progressing means, or essential parts of said work progressing means, is
such that the work is brought to rest accurately in correspondence with the indications of the distance controlling devices.
Referring now to the particular embodiment of the distance indicating and con trolling devices, the shaft 16 (see Figs. 1, 4, 6 and 7) is connected to the work progressing means and the distance controlling means so that notwithstanding the weight and bulk of the work these various agencies move in exact relation with each other whereby the positioning of the work relatively to the tool equipped means is accurately effected. As embodied, the shaft 16 has thereon and rotating therewith a beveled pinion 21 meshing with a beveled face gear 22 fixed to rotate witha shaft 23. The shaft 23 is journaled at 24 and 25. The pinion 26 is fixed to shaft-23 to rotate therewith.
Meshing with the pinion 26 is a gear 27 'fixed to rotate with a shaft 28 mounted in a bearing. 29 in the swinging arm 30.. Fixed also to said shaft 28 is a pinion 31. The arm 30 is loosely sleeved upon a shaft 32 supported at 24 and 33. Meshing with the pinion 31 is a gear 34, sleeved upon the shaft 32. The pinion 35 is also fixed to the sleeve 47 of the gear 34 whereby said gear and pinion rotate together. Sleeved on said sleeve 47 which connects the gear 34 and pinion 35 is an arm 36. Mounted in said arm 36 intermediate its ends is a stub shaft 37, said shaft 37 carrying a gear 38 and a pinion 39 fixed to rotate together. The pinion 39 meshes with a gear 40 sleeved on the shaft 32, to which sleeve 48 is also fixed a pinion 41 whereby said gear and pinion rotate together. Loosely sleeved upon the sleeve 48 which connects gear 40 and pinion 41 is a swinging arm 42. The arm 42 has mounted therein intermediately of its ends a stub shaft 43, said shaft 43 carrying a gear 44 and a pinion 45 fixed to rotate together. The pinion 45 meshes with a fixed arcuate rack 46.
Coiiperating with each of these traveling members or swinging arms 30, 36 and 42 are series of settable devices, representing different distances of travel of the shape or work relatively to the tool equipped means, the various settable devices when set by the operator serving to control the distance determining and controlling devices to position the work in accordance with such setting so that the work shall be operated upon by the tool at the proper and desired place.
In the embodied form of such means an arouate series of stops 60 are shown arranged at difierent points along the path of travel of the arm 42, and a series 61 of such stops are arranged along the path of travel of the arm 36. work in apertures in a guide plate 62. Pivotally connected to each stop is a pin 63, which is also pivotally connected to a key or button 64. The keys or buttons 64 work in apertures in the outer casing 65. The keys 64 are provided with restoring springs 66. On the inner side of the casings the keys 64 have beveled or conoidal portions 67. In front of these portions 67 of the particular series of keys is a plate 68 having apertures therein just sufiiciently large to permit the large part of the portion 67 to pass therethrough. Said slidable plate 68 is mounted to slide on pins 69 and 70 and is yieldingly held by a suitable spring 71 so that the small ends of the conoidal portions 67 of the pins are just within the apertures in the plate 68, and at one side of the apertures considered longitudinally of the series of pins cotiperating with any one of the swinging arms.
- It will thus be seen that this plate and the adjunct parts cooperating therewith constitutes a form of means for locking in position any set stop and for restoring a set stop by making a new setting. That is, when one of the keys 64 is pushed in, the small end of the conoidal part 67 traveling inward causes the plate 68 to slide lengthwise as the key 64 is pressed inwardly, and the part 67 travels inwardly in the aperture in the plate 68. As soon as the entire part 67 has passed through the aperture, the spring 71 causes the plate 08 to slide back, andthe key 64 and the corresponding stop are held in set position. When the operator sets a succeeding key in this series, it will be clear that as the conoidal portion 67 of the new key again centers the plate 68, the key first set, by reason of its conoidal part 67 having its large end again in register with the corresponding aperture in the plate 68, is restored by its spring 66. A. setting of the zero key in any series will, of course, restoreany other key inthe series, and will put the mechanism in condition for a new reading or for oper; ating upon a new piece of work.
Mounted upon the arm 42 is a latch lever The various stops having one arm 80 thereof with a beveled face adapted to cooperate with the various stops of the series 60. The other arm 80 ofsaid lever is pivoted to a link 82, which is pivotally connected to a detent latch or hook 83, which detent hook is pivotally mounted on the arm 42 (see Figs. 4 and 5). In addition to their movement together, the arms 80 and 81 of said lever have independent movement. For this purpose the arm 81 of the lever is pivotally mounted on the swinging arm 42 at 84, and the arm 80 is likewise pivotally mounted at this point and has a portion 85 extending outwardly in the same direction as the arm 81. A spring 87 attached to said part 85 and to the link 82 serves the double purpose of keeping the arm 80 against the lug 86 on the arm 81 and of keeping the arm 81 upward in position. The lug 86 is. carried on lever arm 81 and acts as a stop against both lever arm 81 and the top of the swinging arm 42. On the gear 40 are a series ofpins 88 with which the detent hook 83 is adapted to engage when the lever 80-81 is operated by the set stop. A spring 89 connected to the casing and to a short arm 90 fixed to the lever 42 acts to restore the arm 42 to the right in Fig. 5.
A similar mechanism is provided for the swinging arm 36. The pivoted double arm lever carried by the arm 36 is designated as 91 connecting by 'a pivoted link 92 with a detent hook 93. When the lever 91 is swung by a set stop, this detent hook 93 is in position to engage with one of the stop pins 94 on the gear 34.
On the swinging arm 30, there are provided two levers 100 and 101, each having a beveled arm adapted to engage with the stops .of the double series 102. The stops of the series 102 are staggered, that is, each alternate stop is in line with the lever 100 and the next with the lever 101, as will be clear from Fig. 4. The other arm of the lever 100 is pivotally connected to a rod 105, the other end of said rod being pivotally connected to one arm ofa T lever 106, which lever 106 is'pivotally mounted on the swinging arm 30. The other end of the lever 101 is connected by a pivoted rod 107 to the opposite arm of said T lever 106. The other end of the lever 106 is connected by pivoted link 108 to an arm 109 fixed to a shaft 110. Fixed also to the shaft 110 are a pair of arms 111 straddling a slidable member 113. Said arms 111 have in their ends pins engaging groove 112 in said slidable member 113. Springs 114 and 115 restore swinging arms 36 and 30, respectively, for a new setting. The member 113 is splined on the sleeve 116, which sleeve is fixed to rotate with the shaft 16, but hav-' ing a-slight movement relatively, as will be more fully explained later. In a groove 121 in the shaft 16 is provided a long key or feather 120, which key 120 is pressed outwardly by suitable springs 122 arranged at various points alongits length. The sleeve 116 has limited movement'relative to the shaftv 16, as above indicated and is spring pressed to one limit of such movement by springs 123 arranged at various points along its length.
Encircling or inclosing the end of the shaft 16 is a clutch block 124, which block 124 is fixed to a shaft 125,'to which shaft 125 is also fixed a gear 126. Meshing with the gear 126 is the pinion 12"!- of the motor 128. The foregoing, with their adjunct parts, in the embodied form, serve as driving means for the shape progressing means. The clutch block 124 is provided with a key way into which the key 120 is adapted to pass when permitted to move outwardly, under theimpulsion of its springs 122, by the position of the sleeve 116. On the slidable member 113 there are provided engaging lugs or members 130 and.131, offset or staggered with respect to each other. Cotiperating therewith'is a series of stops 132, preferably in arcuate form and occupying a semi-circumference. Saidv stops are connected by a series of pivoted rods 133 to corresponding bell crank levers 134. These bell crank levers 134 are connected by pivoted rods 135 to keys 136, which may be of the same form asthe keys 64 previously described and operate in the same manner. With the arcuate disposition of the stops 132 shownin Fig. 6, the side rods 133 are provided with bell cranks 141 and short pivoted rods 140, connecting therefrom to the stops 132.
It will be clear, of course, that so far as the mechanical construction is concerned that the machine may be arranged for any distance denominations desired, but according to'present. American practice it is convenient and advisable to have the machine arranged for feet, inches and. fractions of an inch.
In considering the manner of operation ofthe mechanism, just illustrated and described, the keys of the first row, referring to Figs. 3 and 4, may stand successively for ten foot intervals on the work. The next succeeding row may have each key represent the distance of one foot on the work, while the keys of the next row may represent inches, and the succeeding two rows just below, indicated by reference numeral 136 in Fig. 4, may stand for sixteenths of an inch. The first key of each series may represent a zero value, if desired, and call for no travel of the work in connection with that series of keys.
In considering the manner of operation of the mechanism previously described, we may consider the work 00 as being in definite relation to the work progressing means and to the tool equipped means in proper condition for operation, as well as all the other parts in due and proper'position and condition. The operator then wishing to have the tool operate a certain distance from the end of the Work, and we will assume that this distance involves the various denominations from tens of feet to fractions of-an inch, the, operator actuates in each series of keys representing tens of feet, feet, inches and sixteenths of inches the desired keys, which set the corresponding stops.
It will be recalled that the shaft 16 travels with the work progressing means, and it will be understood further that the shaft 108 and the various gears, pinions and arms are connected therewith but that by reason of the various sizes and combinations of gears the movement is greatly reduced and is reduced between the successive arms. The shaft 108 rotates with the shaft 16, and pinion 26 rotates gear 27 and pinion 31. These rotate gear 34 andpinion 35. These' again rotate gear 38 and pinion 39. These in turn rotate gear 40 and pinion 41, and gear 44 and pinion 45 are rotated by pinion 41. As pinion 45 meshes with the fixed arcuate rack 46,:the arm 42 travels along the rack 45, swinging about its center on the shaft 32. This movement continues until the set stop of the series contacts with the lever 8081, when the stop engaging the beveled face of the arm 80, swings the detent hook 83 downward into the path of the pins 88. The next succeeding pin 88 will engage the hook, and as the arm 42 and the gear 40 are traveling in opposite directions, they are brought to rest relatlvely to each other. The
pins 88 are positioned to correspond to ten foot spaces of travel of the work.
The gear 44 has rolled on the pinion 41, as well as being rotated thereby, during the hereinbefore described movement of the arm 42. The gear 40 now having become fixed. the pinion 39 being still driven from the shaft 16 must roll along thegear 40, and the arm 36 begins its travel, swinging about its center on the shaft 32. When the latch 91 on the arm 36 engages the set stop of the series 61 the detent hook 93 engages the next succeeding pin 94 on'the gear 34, and as the arm 36 and the gear 34 are traveling in opposite directions they are bot-h brought to rest. The pins 94' are, spaced apart to correspond to integral foot distances of the travel of the worln It will be understood that as the gear 34 comes to rest the pinion 31 will roll thereon, and the arm 30 will begin to travel, likewise swinging about its center on the shaft or bearing 32. Either the latch 100'or the latch 101 will come in contact with the set stop in the series-102, and the direction in which the T lever 106 swings depends upon whether the lever 100 or the lever 101 is the one engaged by a set stop in the series 102.
In actual practice, successive inches will set the stops alternately for these two levers. That is, by reference to Fig. 4, it will be seen that one key 136 is connected to a stop in one row of the series 102, while the next succeeding key is connected to a stop in the other row. The actuation of the T lever 106 through arm 109 will slide the member 113 in one direction or the other along the shaft 16 and the sleeve 116. This will bring either the engaging lug 130 or the lug 131 into register with the series of stops 132, so that on the next succeeding rotation the member 113 will be arrested by the lug 130 or lug 131 engaging the set stop of the series 132. It will be seen that this sliding movement of the member 113 permits it to rotate with the shaft 16 while the setting of tens of feet and feet are being made,-and brings it into operative position when the inch or fractional inch setting is to be effective.
When the member 113 is arrested from r0- tation, the shaft 16 is going in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 14, the sleeve 116 com ing to rest with the member 113 and the feather 120 rotating with the shaft 16 is pressed downwardly against its springs 122 by the cam surface129 of the sleeve 116, and the key 120 thus passes out of the clutch block 124, thereby cutting off the driving power from the work progressing means. The worm and worm wheel bring the work at once to rest. The particular form of motor employed is also such that the speed is reduced greatly'justprior to stopping.
After the tool equipped means has operated upon the work, a new setting of the distance selecting and controlling devices is made. The stops previously set are restored by the plate 68 in the manner already described. lows the levers on the traveling arms, which were rocked by the stops as already described, to assume their original position. This releases the detent hooks from the corresponding pins on the gears. If there is no new setting in any given series of stops, it will be understood that the corresponding detent hook is left in engagement with the pin on the corresponding gear. The springs 114 and 115 act to restore the arms 30 and 36. The return travel of the arm 30 gives a rotation to the gears whereby the arm 36 gets a forward travel proportionate to the travel of the arm 30 before it engages its stop, and this travel, as well as the travel of the arm 36, corresponding in the present instance to feet, results in a corresponding forward travel of the arm 42, whereby each complete setting is stored in the arm 42, or rather in the distance which it has traveled,

Means are provided whereby when operations upon the work are-to be repeated at equal distances from each other the distance selecting and controlling means after being once set for the desired distance, will repeatedly progress the workfor such distance after successive operations by the tool equipped means without resetting.
In the embodied form of such means, said repeat mechanism may be operated in conjunction with pr independently. of'distance selecting and controlling devices already described. In the embodied form of such means a series of keys 150 are employed generally similar to the keys 64, previously described, and are so shown in the drawing.
The restoring springs are'indicated by reference numerals 151 and the conoidal portion 152, the sliding spring pressed plate is indicated by 153 and the stops projected into the path of the traveling member, or members, by 154. Said stops work in apertures in guide plate 155, and alternate stops are shown in two rows adapted to cotiperate with two levers-carried upon the traveling member which is'in the form of a swinging arm.
A swinging arm 156 is mountedto rock about a center or support 157. Mounted in a bearing in said arm 156 is a shaft 160 carrying a pinion 161, fixed to rotate'with the shaft, and at the other end a gear 162 likewise fixed to rotate with said shaft. The pinion 161 meshes with a fixed arcuate rack 158, mounted on bracket 159. The gear 162 meshes with a pinion 163 fixed to a shaft 164. Said shaft 164 has fixed to the other end thereof a bevel gear 165, said gear 165 meshing with a bevel gear 166 mounted upon a stub shaft 167. The gear 168 rotates with the bevel gear 166. Meshing with the gear 168 is a pinion 169 fixed on a sleeve 170, which sleeve incloses the sleeve 116. Splined upon the sleeve 170 is a slidable member 171, generally similar to the member 113, and having thereon two detent lugs 172 and 17 3, a semicircumference apart and each'movable into and out of alinement with a series of stops generally similar to the stops 132. The member 171 is splined or keyed on the sleeve 170 to slide longitudinally therealong,
but the two rotating together.
To control the sliding of the member 171 on the sleeve 170 to bring either the lug 172 or the lug 173 into alinement with the stops,
or to move both out of alinement with the stops, there is provided in the embodied form an annular groove in the member 171 into which project pins 174 carried in the ends of arms 175 which arms straddle the memher 171. I Said arms 175 are fixed .to a shaft 17 6 to which is also fixed an arm 177. Pivoted to the arm 177 is a rod 178 which rod is likewise pivoted to a lever 179, said lever 17.9 being fulcrumed at 180. Pivotally connected to the other end of said lever 180 is a,
rod 181, which is also pivoted to the lower end of the Tlever 182. Pivoted to one end of the top of. said T lever 182 is a pivoted rod 183 connected to hell crank lever 184, which lever 184 may be of the general form of the lever 8081, heretofore described.
Thislever 184 is adapted to cooperate with any set stop in the corresponding'row of stops of the. series 154. To the other end of the lever 182 is pivoted an arm 190 likewise pivoted to a bell crank lever 191, similar tothe, lever 184, and cooperating with any set stop in the other row of the series Adjacent to the sliding member 171 is a I semi-circular series of stops .192, which are connected by pivoted levers 193 to bell crank levers 194. The other end of the levers 194 are connected by pivoted rods 195 to keys 196 ofthe general form of keys 64, and 0p erating in the same manner. Certain of the stops 192 are not connected directly to the pivoted rods 193, but owing to the semicircular disposition of said stop there is interposed therebetween bell crank levers 197 and pivoted rods 198 to permit the stops being regularly moved for setting and unsetting.
- Meansare provided for connecting or disconnecting the repeat mechanlsm with the other parts of the machine, and the embodied form thereof comprises a clutch member 200 splined or keyed on sleeve 170,
and a corresponding clutch member 201 fixed to rotate with sleeve 116; Clutch member 200 is provided with an annular groove 202, into which projects pins on the ends of -mechanism and adjunct parts, just described, is substantially as follows: The keys .150 are set to correspond to the desired reading or distance, as are likewise the keys 196. If the lever 207 is in the position shown in Fig. 4, the clutch 200-201 being disconnected thereis no driving of the p arts from the-shaft 16. Upon the lever 207 bei-ng 'moved'upwardly, referring to Fig. 4,
and the clutch being then thrown in the arm 156 begins totravel, that 1s, swing about its center and such movement will continue until either of the bell crank levers 184 or 191 encounters the set stop in the series 154.
Thereupon the T lever 182 is swung in either one direction or the other, and the slidable' member 171 brings the lug 172 or the lug 173 into alinement with the series of stops 192. This will then in the next revolution of the shaft 16 cause the setting in the series of stops 196 to become effective, as either the lug 172 or the lug 173 will engage the set stop of the series 192. By reason of the clutch 200201 being in,the feather 120 will be acted on by the sleeve 116 in the manner previously described to uncouple the shaft 16 from the clutch box 124, and the shape is brought accurately to rest, relatively to the tool equipped means, as previously described. When the clutch n1em-' her 201 is moved to the left in Fig. 4 by the devices controlled by the operation of the tool equipped means, hereinafter described, this mechanism is restored to the initial position in substantially the same manner as the main distance selecting and controlling mechanism previously described. The spring 199 serves to restore said mechanism, similarly to said main mechanism.
Means are provided by the invention for controlling or harmonizing the operations of the shape progressing means and. the tool equipped means whereby the shape will be at rest during the operation by the tool, but will be free to progress to the next set distance after the completion of the operation by the tool. In the embodied form of such means (and referring more especially to Figs. 8, 9, 1, 2 and 4) the work is indicated by as and the progressing means and ad junct and cooperating parts by the reference numerals previously applied thereto, the tool carrying member of the tool equipped means is indicated in-Fig. 8 by reference numeral 220, which may be of the general form shown in my U. S. Patent No. 1,075,491 previously referred to, or may be of any other suitable and approved form.
The operating shaft causing the tool to operate upon the work is indicated in Fig. 8 by reference numeral 221. Rotating loosely on said shaft is gear 222 meshing with a pinion 223, fixed on a shaft 224. Said shaft may be driven if desired through a series of reducing gears 225 from a motor 226. I Fixed to said gear 222 is a clutch member 227. Feathered to slide on, and to rotate with, the shaft 221 is the other clutch member 228, and being spring urged into engagement with the clutch-member 227 by a spring 229. Said clutch member is formed with a cam rim 230 thereon and ail-inclined face 231. Mounted in a suitable guiding bracket or block 232 is a sliding member 233 provided with a. beveled end cooperating with the beveled incline 231 on the clutch member 228' A sliding member 234 is also mounted inthe block 232 and cooperates with a cam 230. The sliding member 234 serves to throw in or out the clutch member 228 by the action thereon of the cam 230, as will be more fully explained. The sliding member 233 co6perates with the incline surface 231 to cause said member to move or slide in the block or bracket 232 as the clutch member 228 slides in one direction or the other along the shaft 221 into engaging or nonengaging position with respect to the clutch member 227, to cause the tool equipped means to begin or cease operation.
The sliding member 234 is mounted on a rod 240 pivotally connected to an arm 241 fixed to the shaft 244. Fixed also to said shaft 244 is an arm 245, which arm 245 is pivotally connected by link 242 to an arm 243. Said arm 243 is fixed to a shaft 246. Said shaft 246 has fixed thereto arms 47 and 248, straddling the clutch member 201. Fixed on the rod 240 is a collar 249 against which rests the swinging or pivoted plate 250. A spring 251 is in compression between the plate 250 and the sliding member 234 as shown in Fig. 9.
The sliding member 233 is fixed on a rod 252 working in an aperture in a bracket 253. Fixed on said rod 252 is a collar 254, and between said collar 2G4 and said bracket 252 is a spring 255 in compression, as shown in Fig. 9. Said rod 252 passes through an aperture in the swinging plate 250. A spring 260 is in compression between the swinging plate 250 and the sliding member 233, as shown in Fig. 9. The lower end .of the rod 252 (see Fig. 2) is pivoted to an arm 261 fixed to a shaft 262. Fixed also to said shaft 262 is an arm 263, which arm 263 is pivotally connected by a link 264 to an arm 265.v
Said arm 265 is fixed centrally to an arm 266 to rotate therewith. The ends of said arm 266 are pivotally connected by short links 267 and 268 to the pivotedarms 269 and 270, to which arms are attached respec tively shoes 271 and 272 adapted to brake the shaft 16 by acting upon the sleeve116.
Fixed to the shaft 246 is an arm 280 adapted to engage with the end of the lever 281, which lever 281 is pivoted at 282, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Atthe other end of said lever 281 is an upwardly extending arm 283 held inposition by a flat spring 284, said arm 283 being pivotally connected to the end of the lever 281 as shown in Figs. 4 and 13. The spring 284 presses against the square end of the arm 283 and tends to hold it in position with its free end against the shaft 16.
The manner of operation of themechanism just described is substantially as fol lows:
Sliding member 234, is held in the upward position by clutch member 201 and the intervening connections. Clutch 201 is held in position by a projection 285 on the feather 120. NVhen the work w isstopped the feather 120 moves inwardly, against the pressure of its spring 122, into the shaft 16, as previously described when it ceases to act as a stop.
for clutch member 201. Spring 260, operating through the swinging plate 250 and the collar 249, forces the clutch member 201 to member 234 back again into elevated position, so that as the shaft 221 rotates, clutch member 228 is cammed out of engagement with clutch member 227. The return movement of the clutch member 228, toward the left in Figs. 8 and 9, forces sliding member 233 downwardly, again compressing spring 260 and spring 255, and the parts are thus brought back to the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9.; The upward movement of the sliding member 233 when the clutch member 228 passes into engagement with clutch member 227 to cause the tool-equipped means to operate upon the work, through the train of mechanism described, brings the brake shoes 271 and 272 into engagement with the shaft 16, and holds the work progressing means firmly during the operation 'of the tool upon the work. As the clutch member 228 moves backward from the clutch member 227 and thus. disconnects the tool equipped means from its drive, the shaft 16 is released by the brake shoes 271 and 272 and is thus free to rotate again until the tool equipped means are called into operation.
When the shaft 16 starts into operation,
means it is applied to an electrical motor drive. Referring to Fig. 18, the rotor is indicated by reference numeral 290 and a suitable reversing switch 291. The field winding is 292 and the source of energy is in circuit at some suitable point as 293. A suitable resistance is indicated at 294 and at 296and 298 are pole pieces with a bridging piece 297 movable tomake or break the circuit at said point. As embodied said pole pieces 295 and 296 (see Figs. 5 and 19) are carried on arm 36 and the bridge piece 297 on arm 91,
so that as said arm meets its stop, the circuit is closed at 298 and 296. When the circuit is open at 298296, the motor speeds up and when the circuit is closed at said point, the motor slows down preparatory to the stopping of the work relatively to the tool equipped means.
"In the present embodiment, means are shown whereby when the repeat mechanism is used the work is progressed at slow speed. For this purpose a bridging piece 299 similar to 297 is applied to lever 207, and acts in the same manner.

The invention, in its broader aspects, is not limited to the particular constructions shown, nor to any particular constructions by which it has been or may be carried into effect, asmany changes may be madein the construction without departing from the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progrossing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices arranged together in a group similar to a keyboard and mounted apart from said work progressing means, said devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding t the setting of said settable devices. 2. 5. A machinefor operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a member traveling in predetermined relation to the travel of said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices settable into the path of said traveling member at various points, whereby said traveling member controls the action of said driving means on said progressing means to stop same at a corresponding point in its travel.
6. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined position, tool equipped means for operating upon said shape, driving means for said shape, means for posi tioning and stopping the shape progressed by said progressing means including con nections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, a series of settable devices representing distance denominations and the various distances of said denomina-- tions, and a plurality of traveling members each corresponding to a distance denomination of said settable devices and each traveling member adapted to be arrested by any set stop representing a selected distance in the particular denomination, said members being in definite relation to the shape upon said progressing means and controlling said connections between said driving means and progressing means whereby the shape is stopped in a position relative to said tool equipped means corresponding to the set distance representing device.
7. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined position, toolequipped means for operating upon the shape, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping the progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means including connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, a member moving always in definite relation to said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices separately settable each being adapted when set to stop said member at a definite point in its travel, and a throw out in said connections operated when said traveling member is so stopped and means for preventing loose movement of said shape progressing means when disconnected from said driving means.
8. A .machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined position, tool equipped means for operating upon the shape, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning-and stopping the progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means including connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, a member moving always in definite relation to said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices separately settable each being adapted when set to stop said member at a definite point in its travel, and a throw out in said connections operated when said traveling member is so stopped and a worm in said connections between said throw out and said shape progressing means.
9. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a member swinging about a center and cooperating with a set distance representing device to arrest said shape progressing means when it has traveled the distance for which said distance representing device was set.
10. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing'a shape relatively to said tool equipped means,
driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressingmeans, and connections between said driving meansand said shape progressing means, said connections including a plurality of swinging members each cooperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.
11. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a pluralityof members each swinging about a center separately from another, each cooperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.
12. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a plurality of swinging members, a series of settable devices, said members and devices representing the one distance denominations and the other various distances of the different denominations, said tra el of said members being controlled by the set devices to control the action of said driving means on said shape progressing means, whereby said progressing means is moved a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices.
13. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means,
driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a member swinging in predetermined relation to the travel of said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices settable into the path or" said traveling member at various points whereby said traveling member controls the action of said driving means on said progressing means to stop same at a corresponding point in its travel.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means, driving means therefor, tool equipped means, means for positioning and stopping the shape progressed by said progressing means, said positioning and stopping means comprising connections between the driving means and shape.;a mem, ber swinging in a definite relation corre sponding to the distance between the progressed shape and said tool equipped means, and a plurality of devices representing distances, said devices being settable into the path of said traveling member to control the connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means to stop the progressed shape in a position relatively to the tool equipped means corresponding to the settlng of the set distance representing device.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined position-, tool equipped means for operating upon said shape, driv-v ing-means for said shape, means for positioning and stopping the shape progressed by said progressing means including connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, a series of settable devices representing distance denominations and the various distances of said denominations, and a plurality of swinging members each corresponding to a distance denomination of said settable devices and each swinging member adapted tobe arrested by any set stop representing a selected distance in the particular denomination, said members being in definite relation to the shape upon said progressing means and controlling said connections between said driving means and progressing means whereby the shape is stopped in a position relative to said tool equipped means corresponding to the set distance representing device.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connec tions including a plurality of members traveling to and fro each cooperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means forpositioning and stop ping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means, and said shape progressing means, said connec* tions including a plurality of members each swinging to and fro about a center separately from another, each cooperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped. means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a plurality of members successively movable and each coiiperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.
21. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool,
equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool-equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a plurality of members suc cessively movable in a predetermined relation to the progressed shape, said members each cooperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel. of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool-equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connec tions including a plurality of swinging members successively swinging and each coiiperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a plurality of members successively swinging in a predetermined relation to the progressed shape, said members each cotiperating with a plurality of settable devices to control the travel of said shape progressing means in accordance with the setting of said settable devices.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stop ping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of non-traveling settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means for preventing simultaneous operation of the shape progressing means and of the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing the shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a movable member cooperating with a set distance representing device to arrest said shape progressing means when it has traveled the distance for which said distance representing device was set, and means for preventing simultaneous operation of the shape progressing means and of the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a plurality of traveling members, a plurality of settable devices, said members and devices representing the one distance denominations and the other various distances of the different denominations, said travel of said members being controlled by the set devices to control the action of said driving means on said shape progressing means whereby said progressing means is moved a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means for preventing simultaneous operation of the shape progressing means and of the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means called into action by the work being arrested by said work positioning and stopping means for causing the tool equipped means to operate upon the work.

A machine for operating upon structural. shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means,- and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices arranged in a group apart from said shape progressing means, said devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while the tool equipped means is operating upon the shape.

A. machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel ,of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will. move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means called into action when the tool equipped means begins to operate upon the shape for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while it is being operated upon by the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices arranged in a group apart from said shape progressing means, said devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means controlled by said settable devices whereby said driving means will move said shape progressing means a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means for preventing the tool equipped means operating upon the shape while the shape is being progressed by the shape progressing means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices arranged in a group apart from said shape progressing means, said devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a movable member cooperating with a set distance representing device to arrest said shape progressing means When it has traveled the distance for which said distance representing device was set, and means for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while the tool equipped means is operating upon the shape.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a plurality of traveling members, a series 01"? settable de vices, said members and devices representing the one distance denominations and the other various distances of the different denominations, said travel of said members being controlled by the set devices to control the action of said driving means on said shape progressing means, whereby said progressing means is moved a distance corresponding to the setting of said settable devices, and means for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while the tool equipped means is operating upon the shape.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a member traveling in predetermined relation to the travel of said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices mounted separate from said traveling member, said devices being settable into the path of said traveling member at various points whereby said traveling member controls the action of said driving means on said progressing means to stop same at a corresponding point in its travel, and means for preventing the shape progressin means progressing the shape while the todl equipped means is operating upon the shape.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination shape progressing means adapted to hold a shape in a predetermined position, tool equipped means for operating upon the shape, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping the progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means including connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, a member moving always in definite relation to said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices mounted separately from said movable member, said devices being separately settable each being adapted when set to stop said member at a definite point in its travel, and av throw out in said connections operated when said traveling member is so stopped and means for preventing loose movement of said shape progressing means when disconnected from said driving means, and means for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while the tool equipped means is operating upon the shape.
A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices representing distances of travel of the shape progressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a movable member cooperating with a set distance representing device to arrest said shape progressing means when it has traveled the distance for which said distance representing device was set, and means called into action when the tool equipped means begins to operate upon the shape for preventing the shape progressing means progressing the shape while it is being operated upon by the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including a combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a member traveling in predetermined relation to the travel of said shape progressing means, a plurality of devices mounted separately from said traveling member, said devices being settable into the path of said traveling member at various points whereby said traveling member controls the action of said driving means on said progressing means to stop same at a corresponding point in its travel, and'means called into action when the tool equipped means begins to operate upon the shape for preventin the shape progressing means progressing tie shape while it is being operated upon by the tool equipped means.

A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said shape progressing means, and means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, including a series of settable devices including a key board repre senting distances of travel of the shape pro gressing means, and connections between said driving means and said shape progressing means, said connections including a movable member cooperating with a set distance representing device to arrest said shape progressing means when it has traveled the distance for which said distance representing device was set, and means for preventing the tool equipped means operating upon the shape while the shape is being progressed by the shape progressing means. 38. A machine for operating upon structural shapes including in combination tool equipped means, means for progressing a shape relatively to said tool equipped means, driving means for said progressing means, means for positioning and stopping said progressed shape relatively to said tool equipped means, comprising a plurality of traveling members, a series of settable devices, said members and devices representing the one distance denominations and the other various distances of the different denominations, said travel of said members being controlled by the set devices to control
