c of pump and storage reservoir, and a further feature is the novel construction employed for introducing the projectile at the breech of the shooting barrel. Still further, the invention comprises various features of construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: 1
Figure 1 is an elevation of the gun;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough with the parts in normal position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the operation of the pump. Y
A is the false barrel, and B is the true or shooting barrel .arranged parallel .to and above said false barrel. C is an air compressor located within the false barrel and operated by a suitable pumping mechanism, preferably comprising a handle D and tog gle levers E E and connecting link F. The compressor C is so constructed as to both compress and store the compressed air, and to accomplish this with a simple and compact apparatus I have devised the following construction G is an outer cylinder, which is directly connected to the link F of the toggle levers and is adapted to be reciprocated longitudinally thereby. His a piston for operating in the cylinder Gr. I is a tubular stem for the piston H, which stem forms a storage chamber for the compressed air. J is a check-valve controlling admission of air from the cylinder G into the tubular stem 1. K is a discharge valve at the opposite end of the tubular stem and 'L is a spring between the valves J and K for yieldably holding each of the latter to its seat. The stem I is anchored within the false barrel by suitable means, such as the pin M, so as to be fixed in position, and the outer end of the stem beyond the valve K is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a passage N leading to the shooting barrel B. The valve K is also provided with an operating stem 0, which extends outward and is in operative relation to a trip mechanism P actuated by the trigger Q. The arrangement is such that when the trigger is pulled the stem 0 will be pressed inward, unseating the valve K and permitting the compressed charge of air to pass through the passage N into the shooting On the other hand,'when the valve K is seated a reciprocating movement of the handle D will actuate the toggle levers E E and link F, so as to reciprocate the cylinder G, each rearward stroke compressing a charge of air therein and forcing it beyond the check-valve J into the storage chamber. A fresh charge of air is admitted into the cylinder G at the outer end of its stroke, through a port G which is uncovered in this position.
T o facilitate the loading of the gun, especially where used in the shooting of darts, I have provided a breech-loading mechanism of the following constuction: R is a telescopic portion of the true barrel at the rear end thereof and S is a handle for moving the portion R longitudinally. T is a tubular nipple for engaging the inner end of the barrel R, said nipple being in direct communication with the passage N for the compressed air. By moving the handle S outward, the barrel B may be withdrawn from the nipple T with suflicient clearance for the insertion of a dart or other projectile into said nipple, and when reengaged with the nipple will. form a substantially air-tight joint. This construction permits of quickly inserting the darts after successive shots, and as the dart is placed in the nipple the full force of the compressed charge will be directed thereagainst.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a gun, a cumulative air compressor, comprising a cylinder and hollow piston, said piston forming the storage chamber, a check-valve controlling the admission to said storage chamber, and a trip-valve for controlling the discharge therefrom.
2. In a gun, a cumulative air compressor, comprising a cylinder and a hollow piston, means for reciprocating said cylinder, a check-valve controlling the passage of air from said cylinder to said hollow piston, a trip-valve at the opposite end of said piston, and a connecting passage between said trip-valve and the shooting barrel.
3. In a gun, the combination with a false barrel, of a cumulative air compressor there in, comprising a cylinder slidable within said false barrel, a hollow piston within said cylinder, a check-valve controlling communication between said cylinder and hollow piston, a trip-valve at the opposite end of said hollow piston, a trigger, a connection between said trigger and trip-valve, a shooting barrel, and an air passage between said shootingbarrel and said trip-valve.
4. In an air gun, the combination with a false barrel, of a cumulative air compressor therein, comprising a cylinder adapted for reciprocation within said false barrel, a stationary hollow piston anchored within said false barrel and in engagement with said cylinder, aconnection between the outer end of said piston and the shooting barrel, a check-valve controlling communication be tween said cylinder and hollow piston, a trip-valve controlling connection between said hollow piston and shooting barrel, and a trigger mechanism for actuating said trip-valve.
5. In an air gun, a cumulative air compressor comprising a reciprocating cylinder, a piston for said cylinder having a hollow stem constituting an air storage chamber, a
cheek-valve controlling communication between said cylinder and hollow stem, a connection between the opposite end of said hol- Copies of this patent may be obtained for actuating stem, a trigger, and a rod connected to said trigger for engaging the stem of said outer valve to trip the same.
7. In a gun, the combination with an air compressor, of a shooting barrel having a telescopically-movable section, and a tubular nipple for engaging said telescopicallyrmovable section, forming a receiver for the projectile, said nipple being connected to the air-compressing means. i
8. In a gun, the combination with an air. compression cylinder, of a shooting barrel arranged parallel thereto and having a telescopically-movable section, and a fitting connecting said air-compressing cylinder with said shooting barrel, having a tubular nipple for telescopically engaging said section, said nipple forming a receiver for the projectile. v
In testimony whereof I affix my'signature.
