Description
J. HOLM.
PLUMB LEVEL. APPLICATION man FEB. 23. I917.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
. sonn- HOLM; on
TERRITORY OF ALASKA.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application area February 23, 191,7 Serial a 159,411.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .IoHN HQLM, b citizen of the United States, residing at J uneau, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plumb levels, and has for its object to provide a level of simple and cheap construction which is adapted to be used in connection with a straight edge stock for determining in degrees the rise or fall of an uneven surface.
Other and further objects will be in part apparent and in part described as the description is proceeded with.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention, showing the cover plate removed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover plate in place;
Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the front cover or plate detached;
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the rear cover or plate detached;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the pendulum or pointer.
Referring more specifically to the accompanying drawings in which like' reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 denotes a stock or straight edge apertured as at 2 for the reception of a metallic ring-like casing or body member 3. The casing 3 while preferably annular in form obviously may be of any desired shape adapted to fit any correspondingly shaped opening 2. Thumb nuts 24 serve to maintain the casing fixedly within the opening 2 in a predetermined position as will hereinafter appear.
A readily removable cross plate or bar 4 has its ends snugly but slidably fitting within oppositely disposed grooves 5 formed in the inner peripheral wall of the casing 3. The grooves 5 are so alined and positioned with respect to the straight edge or stock that the bar 4 will parallel the bottom or straight edge 6 of the stock or straight edge 1.
An inverted U-shaped member 7 is rigidly bolted, in depending position, to the bar 4 as by means of bolts 8 and nuts 9. A T- shaped pendulum or pointer 10 is pivotally mounted between the apertured ears 11 of this bar,pointed screws 12 adapted to enter the recesses 13 formed in, the head lt of the pointerv serving as bearings about which the pointer oscillates. The pointer is of such a length that the point of the same will work over and in close proximity to the graduated dial 15.
In order to protect the parts of the plumb from the elements and also present an attractive appearance front and rear covering plates 16 and 17 are provided. These plates are in the form of fiat disks adapted to fit snugly within the aperture 2 and against the front and rear side edges respectively of the ring-like member or casing 3. The plate 16 is held in place by means of angle strips 17 secured to plate 16 in pairs as by rivets or the like 18, the strips of each pair being spaced apart sufliciently to accommodate .therebetween the cross plate or bar 4.
Angle strips 19 secured to the rear cover plate 17 by rivets or the like 20 are adapted to clamp the plate 17 to the rear edge of the bar 4. It will thus be observed that the cover plates may be readily removed to permit access to the various parts for purposes of repair.
The front cover plate 16 is cut away or depleted circumferentially as at 21 to expose the dial and lower end of the pointer to vilew without the necessity of removing the p ate.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a stock provided with a recess, of a plumb level comprising a casing formed of a ring-like metallic mem ber adapted to be seated in said recess, said ring-like member being provided with a graduated dial and formed with a pair of oppositely disposed grooves, a cross bar slidably mounted in said grooves, and a pointer mounted on said cross bar.
2. The combination with a recessed member, of a plumb level comprising a casing adapted to be seated in said recessed member, a removable cross bar within said casing, a pointer supported on said cross bar,
10 a graduated dial Within said casing, and
front and rear covers for said casing supported from said cross bar, said front plate being depleted circumferentially to expose said dial and pointer to View.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. 15
. JOHN HOLM.
