' State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway construction, the primary object 4 being to produce a metallic railway tie that shall be provided with novel rail-securing means. Another object of the invention is to provide a hollow metal tie with means for sustaining the rails thereon, said means having adjustable features whereby the same may be moved to tightly engage and clamp the rails to the tie.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

As illustrated by the accompanying drawings, the tie includes a stamped metal mem ber shaped to provide a horizontally straight bearing or upper face 1, parallel sides 2 which have their edges formed with outer horizontally disposed flanges 3. Secured to the flanges, at the ends of the tie, are longitudinally extending plates 4, and each of said plates has its ends bent downwardly providing flanges 5 which are arranged transversely of the tie. These flanges are adapted to enter the roadbed so that the plates 4 and the flanges 3 of the tie will rest directly upon the said roadbed, the flanges 5 preventing longitudinal movement.
The substantially U-shaped central portion of the tie provided by the upper face 1 of the sides 2 is, of course, hollow through out the length of the tie and the top 1, adjacent the ends of the .tie, is provided with an orifice 7 disposed outwardly of the longitudinally extending slot 8, and at a suitable distance inward of the said slot 8 the face 1 of the tie is provided with 'a transverse opening 9.. The sides of the tie below'the longitudinal slots 8 are provided with transverse apertures 10, the aperture upon one of the sides of the tie being of a greater size than that upon the opposite side.
The rails are indicated by the numeral 11, the inner rail engaging members by the numeral 12, while the outer rail engaging members are indicated by the numerals 13. The inner rail engaging members are constructed each from a sheet of suitable metal and have one end provided with a longitudinally extending reduced tongue 14 which is arranged in a plane below that of the member proper so that a shoulder 15 is provided between-the tongue 14 and the member 12. This tongue is of a width to snugly pass through the opening 9 of the tie and the plate from which the member 12 is formed is of a width approximately equaling the. upper face 1 of the tie and is of a length to receive the base flange of the rail; The plate providing the member12 at a suitable distance inward of its tongue 14 is slit or may be otherwise formed with a spring rail-engaging lip 16 that contacts with the longitudinal edge and the upper face of the inner base flange of the rail. The outer rail engaging member 13 includes an upper thickened portion or block 17, the said block having its inner end shaped to agree with the cross sectional contour of the rail whereby the same'niay contact with the base flange of the rail,- the web thereof, and underlie the head of said rail. The block has its horizontally straight lower face centrally provided with a depending longitudinally extending flanged plate 18 which is in the nature of a web and is of a less length than that of the slot 8 in the tie. The corner of the web, below the engaging tace of the block is notched, or is otherwise formed with an extension in the nature of a shoulder 18. As the web is of a less length than that of the slot 8 in the tie, it will be apparent that the said web may beinserted within the said slot and the member 13 moved in the direction of the rail to bring the engaging face of the block into contacting position with the rail, after the said rail has been arranged upon the tie. The web 18 is provided with an opening 19 whereby a wedge-shaped slit securing member 20 passed through the apertures 10 in the sides of the tie will also pass through the said opening 19 and contacting with the walls provided thereby force the member 13 inwardly into rail engagin position. The horizontally straight un erface of the block 17 of the member 13 is provided with a depending lug 21, and this lug is adapted to fit in the orifice 7 of the tie, when the member 13 has been moved in the direction of the rail to engage with the rail. The outer side of the' lug 21 is beveled, and the outer wall of the orifice 7 is likewise beveled, 'to permit of the arrangement of the block member 17 in its engagement with the rail, as previously described.
In the structure illustrated in Figs. 7 to 10 the tie is similar to that previously described but the sides 2' thereof instead of being provided with only two registering apertures 22, are provided with an additional pair of registering apertures 23. The rail 24 rests directly upon the upper face 1' of the tie and the inner rail engaging member 25 is constructed of a single strip of metal which is provided with a reduced extension providing a tongue 26 that is adapted to be inserted through the inner opening 9' in the top of the tie, while a wedge-shaped slit member 27 passes through the inner registering openings in the sides of the tie and underlies the tongue 26. The outer rail-engaging member 27 includes a fiat body portion 28 having its inner end bent to pro vide a rail engaging lip 29 which is cen trally provided with a downturned web 30 having an opening 31. The web below the upper plate of the rail engaging member has its inner edge beveled and cut and having its upper corner depressed or cut to provide a shoulder 30. It is to be understood that the web 30 is of a less length than the slot 8', and consequently the member 27, after the web 30 has been inserted within the said slot 8 may be moved longitudinally of the ties in the direction of the rail so that the shoulder 30 will underlie and engage with the top plate 1' of the tie. The body portion 28 is preferably provided outwardly of the web 30 with a depending lug 50 which is adapted to be received in an orifice 51 in the top plate 1' of the tie, when the member 27 has been brought to rail-engaging position. The outer edge of the lug 50 is beveled, as is also the outer wall of the orifice 51 in which the said lug is received, and this arrangement permits of the Web 30 of the rail engaging member 27 moving through the slot 8 to bring the said member to proper rail engaging position. It will be apparent that when the openings in the webs of the rail-engaging members are brought adjacent to the openings in the sides of the tie, the passing of the wedge-shaped members through the said openings will have a tendency to move the railengaging members in the direction of the rails so that a tight engagement of the said members with the rails is insured. All of the slit wedge-securing members are adapted to have their ends bent in opposite directions over one of the sides of the tie.
Having thus described the invention, what Iclaimisz' I 1. The combination with a hollow substantially U-shaped tie having its top provided with slits and its sides provided with registering openings, rails for the tie, and means for securing the rails to the tie, said means including an inner and an outer railengaging member, the inner member being constructed from a plate having a reduced ofi'set tongue which is adapted to be passed through one of the slots in the tie and having a rail-engaging lip, the outer rail engaging member having its inner end shaped to be received in the fishing spaces of the rail and having a depending web that is notched below the rail engaging portion of the said member that is adapted to be inserted in the outer slot of the tie, a wedge member passing through the transverse openings in the sides of the tie and through an opening in the web of the outer rail engaging member for moving the said member inwardly of the tie to rail engaging position, and said wedge member being slit and adapted to have its ends bent over the sides of the tie.
2. The combination with a hollow metal tie having its top provided with openings and its sides provided with registering apertures, of means for securing rails upon the said tie, said means including an inner rail engaging member constructed from a tending tongue'that is arranged out of the plane of the plate and which is adapted to be passed through the inner opening in the top of the tie, and an outer rail engaging means having its upper portion of a width approximately equaling the width of the tie and having its inner portion shaped to engage in the fishing space of 7120 fiat plate having a reduced outwardly exthe rail, said member having its lower face horizontally straight and provided with a member adapted to be received in an aperdepending tongue which projects under its ture in the tie. ll rail-engaging lip, said tongue having an In testimony whereof I affix my slgnature. opening, a; slit Wedge-member passing his through the apertures in the sides of the tie WILLIAM X F.
