Description

w. HAAK.
STOCK TANK HEATER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 4. |916.
PatentedSept. 18,1917.

WILLIAM HAAK, 0F MADISON, WISCONSIN.
STOCK-TAN K HEATER.
Application filed March 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-IAAK, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Tank `Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stock tank heaters in which a water tight heater is disposed in a tank of water and a fire kept within the casing; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a means for readily starting a fire with ample draft; second, to check the direct draft and produce a down, or horizontal draft, as desired, to conform to weather conditions; and third, to have all the controlling mechanism of the drafts above the heater and easy to access.
I attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1,is a plan of my heater; Fig. 2, is a plan of the crown or baiiie plate, 2; Fig. 3, is a front view with the end plate removed; and Fig. 4C, is a View with the left side removed.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The casing, 1, is formed of sheet metal, sides, ends, and bottom welded together forming a water tight box, secured to the front end. Inside this casing is disposed a grate, 7, which inclines toward the bottom and turns upward at the rear end; on the' top of the rear end of the grate, 7, is located the lower edge of a crown or baie plate, 2, which inclines forward over the grate and extends upward to the top of the casing. An aperture, 6, is located equidistant the sides and adjacent the lower edge of the said plate, 2, and is provided with a swinging damper or door, 3, pivotally secured to the plate by the pin, 5; the lug, 19, integral with the upper front corner of the door, is connected by an eye, 20, to the damper rod, 4L,
Specification of Letters Patent.

to which are hingedly attached the front cover, 13, by the ribs, 14:, and the rear cover, 15, by the ribs, 16; a portion of the front cover, 13, at one corner is removed to allow the air tube, 8, to pass downward in the corner of the casing, through and a distance below the grate, said tube, to be secured in any convenient manner to the grate or casing. A damper, 9, is provided within the tube adjacent the upper end thereof; a plate, 17, is located back of the grate and an ash pan, 18, beneath the grate.
To operate my heater, place the fuel on the grate and after igniting, open the damper, 9, admitting air under the grate; then open to its full extent, the damper door, 3, which will cause air to pass through the fire and directly out of the stack, and when the iire is in proper condition, both the aforesaid dampers may be closed suliiciently to cause a down draft through the grate under the plate, 17, and out of the stack. It is obvious that in muggy weather the use of the dampers, 9 and 3, would be of great advantage in handling a fire in the heater.
Claim:
In a tank heater comprising a casing, a grate, a baflie plate over the grate and a baffle plate back of said grate, an aperture provided in said baflie plate over said grate and near the lower terminus thereof, a sliding door operated by a rod extending upward through the top of said heater and adapted to cover the aperture in said baiie plate.
In testimony whereof I alflx my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. WILLIAM I-IAAK.
Witnesses:
GEORGE F. Essnn, THEO. M. HOHN.
