UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE D. PLATT, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
INCLOSED-SWITCH CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 18, 191
Application filed March 3, 1917. Serial No. 152,257.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. PLATT, a citizen of the United States 'of America, residing -at Bridgeport, Conn., have invented a new and useful Incloscd-Switch Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to pre-' able character containing any suitable form of switch mechanism and sockets for the usual fuse plugs. cover is provided through which the fuses may be inserted and removed. This insu lating cover may be held in place by a screw and provision is made for sealing this screw to the insulating-cover so that it is impossible to remove the screw or the cover without breaking the seal.
Figure 1 illustrates a construction embodying the improvements of my invention, part of the cover being broken away and exposing the interior insulating cover and Fig. 2, is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view showing the box closed.
Fig. 3, is a detail view of the interior insulating cover.
The switch mechanism may be of any suitable form. As herein shown it has an insulating base 5 which is secured in the body 6 of the box. The mo'vable switch member 7 is adapted to be operated by means of a handle 8 having a shaft 9 pivoted in the box and an ofiset or eccentric 10. The stationary contacts are not shown but may be of any suitable character.
The insulating base carries suitable terminals for the fuse plugs including screw sockets such as 11 into which a plug such as An interior insulatingings, and thus the fuse plugs when in place will prevent the insulating plate or interior cover from being removed.
The plate 13 is also provided with a central slot 15 for a screw 16. A. nut 17 is sealed in the back of the insulating base to receive this screw 16. The head of the screw is larger than the slot 15 so as to hold the plate 13 in place. The head of the screw is provided with a hole 18 and the plate 13 is provided with holes-19 and 20 so that a sealing wire 21 may be passed through the head of the screw 16 and through the insulating cover plate 13 and heldby a seal 22. This wire will prevent the rotation of the screw 16 and will thus prevent the removal of the insulating cover plate 13. y
The box is preferably provided with an outside metal cover 23 hinged at 24 and hav-v ing a knob 25. This outside cover may be opened for the purpose of inserting or replacing the fuse plugs. Obviously the switch may be operated by the handle 8 with the cover 23 open or closed, as desired. When it is desired to obtain access to the switch contacts, the seal 22 is broken, the wire 21 removed, the screw 16 unscrewed from its seat, the fuse plugs removed and the insulating cover plate 13 takenout.
1. In an inclosed switch construction, a box body, a cover therefor, switch mechanism within the box body and having sockets for fuse plugs, a protective partition within the box body covering the switch mechanism therein and forming a protective covering for said mechanism whenthe box cover is open, said protective partition having openings therein in line with the fuse sockets of the switch mechanism to thereby enable replacement of fuses without exposure of the switch mechanism, and means for securing the partition in its protective position.
2. In an inclosed switch construction, a box body and a movable cover therefor, an insulating base mounted in the box body, switch parts and fuse'sockets on said insulating base, and a protective partition of insulating material secured within the box body in position covering the live parts of the switch mechanism and provided with openings therein in line with the fuse the aforesaid switch mechanism and pr0- tid ed with openings in line with the fuse 10 sockets'to enable replacement of fuses without exposure of live parts of the switch mechanism when the box cover is open, means for securing the protective partition to the insulating base and means for sealing 15 said securing means.
