Be it known that I, MATTHIAS BROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at RoXbury, in the county of Suffolk andflCommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements'in Lasts, of. which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters onthe drawings indicating like parts in the several figures. I i V This invention relates to lasts and particularly to lasts of that type in which the fore and heel parts are movably connected soj that the last may bebroken topermit it to'be inserted in, or removed from, a shoe, and maybe held in extendedcondition while in the shoe; 7 An important-feature of the invention: is
comprised in a simple and eflicientlock to hold the last against movement when' in' eX- tended condition so that relative movement of theparts will be prevented under the usual strains to which theshoe issub jected during the shoe making operations, but which lock may be caused to yield to permit the last to be broken by a simple manipulation. Y
'In the illustrated embodiment 'ofthe in vention the improved lock is shownapplied to a last in which the fore and heel parts are hingedly connected, and the lockis, shown as comprising a spring which is fastened at one end to one member of the last'and v at its opposite, or free end bearsyieldingly against the other member and is recurved at said end to engage a curved recess in such member when the last is extended. When the last is broken the free end of. the spring is held yieldingly against one of theadjacent Surfaces of the last members and; thereby serves .to frictionally maintainthelast in its shortened, or broken condition.

and having its opposite end recurved, and a second part hingedly connected with the first part, said parts having a curved line of division which forms abutting surfaces in sliding engagement, said second part having a recess curved to correspond with said recurved end, the parts being so arranged that when the last is extended the spring lies substantially parallel with the line of relative movement of the parts to thereby resist such movement.
9. A last comprising one part having a spring rigidly secured thereto at one end and having its opposite end recurved, and a second part hingedly secured to the first part, said parts'having a curved line of division forming abutting surfaces in sliding contact, said second part having a recess curved to correspond with the recurved end "of said spring, said end being adapted to I MATTHIAS BROOK.
