Be it known that l, FRANK L'. Sessions, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county ofFranklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements 'in Locomotives with Haulage Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
A locomotive embodying the invention is adapted primarily for use in and about coal or other similar mines for hauling theseparate mine cars from the rooms, or I other places in which they are loaded, and collect ing them into trips or trains to be thereafter hauled from the mine. Under many co'ndi tions it is impossible for the locomotive itselfeven when provided with an electric cable reel mechanism or other means for supplying electric current, to enter into thc rooms to be attached directly to the cars. Under Isuch circumstances use is made of a locomotive having u haulage cablewhich canbeunwound from a reel on the locomotive and its end taken into a room and connected with the car. And then, by suitable power mechanism, the reel is turned n'd the cable is wound u on it, the car being hauled out to a point c Osely adjacent the locomotive.
One object of this invention is to vprovide in :1 locomotive of this general class an improved driving mechanism for the locomotive and for the rcel.
Another object is to provide an improved mounting for the reel and an improved general arrangementof the reel with respect to the other locomotive parts.
i For the Asake of economy in Iirst'cost, and in order to reduce the weight, it is, under many circumstances, found desirable to use `a single motor, or a sin le set of motors', 'and to provid: gearing w ereby them'otoi -or motors can li used either to drive the locomotive itself or to' drive the reel, or to drive both simultaneously. lBy n'iy invention, I have introduced a differential vgearin -hetween the motor on'the one hand'ifzn the locomotive track wheels and the reel lon the other hand, and have provided suitable brake mechanism whereby either the locomotive wheelsxmay be locked and the power transmitted to the reel, or whereby the reel may be locked and the powerftrnnsmitt'd to the Wheels Oli', if desired, the wheels and the reel may' both be left'free and power transmitted to rotate both of them` simultaneously. By my invention 'I have also provided e novel and advantageous mounting for the reel. l mount the rcel concentricallv with one of the main axles, preferably supiporting it directlyupon the axle.. ln this way a very compact arrangement of the operative parts is provided, the driving gearing is greatly simplified, and the reel is firmly held in its true position.

At the rear end of the locomotive are arranged the motormuns sent T and the controlling mechanism, such as thc controller 8, brake wheel 30, etc.
The motors 10, 10, are supported in any suitable manner and are geared by means of the pinions 11, 11 to thc gear wheels 12, 12, respectively. Each of those gear wheels 12, 12 is loosely mounted upon one of the locomotive axles 4 and 5 and has jimrnaled with in it upon radial axes the bevel pinions 13, 13. The pinions of each geur wheel 12 mesh on one side of the wheel with a bevel gear wheel 14, which is keyed to its axle and is ada lted to drive the track wheels and to proliel lthe locomotive bodily. longitudinally. The friction ring 17 on the gear wheel 15 is adapted to coact with the conical face 18 upon the drum. To bring the friction ring into contact with the drum the clutch shifter, indicated as a whole by 19, is employed. The stationary ring .20 of this clutch shifter is formed with a spiral end face 2l, which fits against a correspondngly shaped m'ovable ring 22. This ring 22 can berotat'e'd by means of th rd 23 to force the drum against the friction ring 17. By means of the spring 23 this rod is feld yieldingly in such a o'sition as to maintain the drum in fricti'ona Contact with the gear wheel 15.

Upon the Idrurh 16 is wound the haulage or drive cable 33 which is conducted from the drum between the guide shcaves 34 mounted in the draw-liar ockct or slot 85 formed inthe front end frame 2 of the locomotive. .The cable isprovided a't its free end with a coupling hook 36 by which it can be secured to the. c'ar or train of 'ciirs which are to be hauled.`
The manner 4inw'hich this locomotive is o. erated will be quite readily apparent from tie description of the working parts. When the ocomotive i@ coupled to a train of cars by r'neans of its draw-bar, and the cable 33,is notjnoperation', the gear \vlels 15 Iare held stationary bymeans ofl the brake bands and tbe hand wheel 28 and the rotary motion-of the motors is transmitted wholly to the truck wheels. "'hen it is dcsired to hoist loaded cars up steep inclined track-anys from what are known as dip` rooms, and into which it is not practical to run the locomotives, the locomotive is held stationary at the top ol the grade by setting the brake mechanism 25), the motor is started and the drum lo is rotated to wind up the cable and haul the cars out oi' thi` various rooms in which they have been loaded. Daring such operation the brake bands 2li are released and th'e spring operated clutch shifter 19 is released so that the drum is held in frictional contact with the gear 15.
When it is so desired the cable can be used as a coupler in hauling the cars along the entry-way from room to room while they are heilig gathered. lt is also possible with this locomotive, if it should be found advantagcous, to lower the cars into the rooms by holding the gear wheels 15 stationary and controlling the unwinding of the cable 33 by means of the clutch shifter 1l), which can be used to increase or decrease the friction between the drum and the stationary gear wheel 15.

What l claim is:
1. In a gathering locomotive, the, combination with a frame, axles and track wheels, of a motor connected to thc track wheels, a rotatable drum` a cable. connected at one end to the drum to be wound thereon and adapted to be attached at the other end to a car, power transmitting mechanism comprising a friction clutch between thc motor and drum', means for controlling the. clutch, and means for resisting the movement of the clutch element operatively nearest the motor, the clutch heilig thus adapted for resisting the rotation of the drum in the unwinding direction.
2. In a gathering locomotive, the combination of a frame, a pair of axles, drive wheels on the axles, a motor geared to one. axle and rotatable independently thereof, a motor geared to the other axle and rotatable. independently thereof, a rotatable drum, a cable connected at one end to the drum to be wound thereon and adapted to be attached at' the other end to a car, power transmittin' mechanism between one motor andz the rum, and power transmitting mechanism between the other motor and the drum.
