Description
A. B. SPRINGSTEAD.
DOOR HANGER MEANS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5, 1915.

CHARLES A. GIFFOBI), OF KALAIVIAZOO, MICHIGAN.
. p noon-HANGE MEANS.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented may is, 1915.
Application filed March 5, 1915. Serial No. 12,375.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAM 13. SPRING- STEAD, citizen of the United States, residing at 524C Elmwood Court, Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Door-HangerMeans, of which the followingis a specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in door hanger means. I
The objects of this invention are: First, to provide a door with a hanger which will carry the same in a straight line in the manner of a slide door on pivoted means. Sec- 0nd, to provide an improved construction of link hangers for adoor for maintaining the same in a level position and moving it in a straight line without the assistance of tracks. 1 p
Further objects and objects relating to economics and details of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is an elevation view of the upper part ofa door and its hanger and the wall for supporting the same. Fig. II is a detail horizontal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. I showing the disposition and relation of the links and arms when the door is in open position. Fig. III is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. I showing the cap for the door and the hanger bracket.
In the drawings, the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I have shown my invention as adapted to afreight car door.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 indicates the side wall of the car, 2 indicates the door, 2 the front stop for the door and 2" the back stop for the door. A link hanger arm 3 is disposed across and connected to the door carrying link arm 4 by the pivot 5. The hanger arm 3 is supported at its upper end by the pivot 7 on the hanger bracket or support 6 and the upper end ofthe arm 4 is pivoted at 9 on the bracket 8 in the upper outside central portion of the door 2.. A laterally disposed link 10 is connectedby pivot 11 tothe lower end of the hanger arm link 3 and at its opposite end by pivot 13 to bracket 12 on the lower outer corner or. side of the door 2. The lower end of the door carrying arm A: is connected by pivot 15 to link 14 which is connected at its opposite end by pivot 17 to a bracket 16 which is beyond the inneredge of the door when in the opened position and outside of the path of the same. A. cap 18 is *provided above the door to protect the same butit in no way serves as a track or support for the door merely guiding and retaining the upper edge from being swung outwardly.
I have described my improved door with a hanger in closed position. IVhen the door is open, it is simply moved back to the position by the dotted lines when the inner edge of the door strikes the back stop 2". The link arms 3, 1 then swing past each other, the required space being-provided between the hanger 6 and the upper edge of the door .2 to permit the bracket 8 and the arm 4 to swing past the same to the position indicated by'the dotted lines. The bracket 12 with its pivot 13 passesbelow the lower end of the link arm 1 thus permitting the freedom of the movement of the door from its front stop to its rear stop.
It is clear that the details of this structure can be considerably varied without departing from my invention. I have shown the same as adapted to car doors, the invention is adapted to any sort of door'that it is desired to manipulate after the manner of a sliding door. The same would be of great advantage on barn doors and also on what are known as sliding parlor doors for dwellings. It is clear that the various pivotings can be considerably varied without departing from my invention although the particular arrangement I have here made gives the door great freedom of movement and the interference ofthe different parts is entirely obviated. I desireto claim the same specifi-' cally as shown and broadly as pointed out in the appended claims. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. The combination ofa door, a support ing hanger bracket therefor, cross arms pivoted to each other, the outer hanger arm of which is pivotally secured to the said hanger bracket at its upper end and the inner door carrying link of which at its upper end is pivotally secured to the upper central portion of the said door, the said hanger bracket projecting outwardly to a position to clear the said door carrying-arm,-a laterally disposed link from the lower end of the hanger arm to a pivot on said door, disposed below the path of the lower end of the door carrying arm, a laterally disposed link from the lower end of the door carrying arm to a pivot beyond the area of the said door when in itsopen or closed position, coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a door, a supporting hanger bracket therefor, cross arms pivoted to eachothenthe outer hanger arm of which is pivotally secured to the saidha-ng'er bracket at its upper end and'the inner door carrying link of which at'its upper end is pivotally secured to the upper-central por- I for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a door, a support hanger arm on said pivot, a door carrying arm disposed across said hanger arm and pivoted thereto, a pivot fixed on said door for the upper end of said carrying arm, a laterally disposed link connecting thelower end of said hanger arm to the said door, and
therefor, a pivot fixed on said support, a
a laterally disposed link connecting the v "lower end of the carrying arm to the said support ou'tside Ithe path of said door.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesse s.
