Be it known that I, GEORGE SINCLAIR, a
citizen. of theUnited States, residing at St.
Paul, in the county of Ramseyand State of Minnesota, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Milking Apparatus, of which the following is a specificaton.
The object of this invention is the production of improved milkingapparatus, which can be employed to .efiiciently milk a single or plurality of cows simultaneously.
This invenion provides simpleand inexpensive construction, which'can'be 'operated by a minimum amount of power, and. which is sanitary, the parts being easily cleaned and providing a minimum number of PI'OJBCUOIIS and crev1ces,1n winch disease'breedingdgerms might'collect.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a detail partly insection of my invention, illustrating. the pumping apparatus which is employed; Fig. 2 'is' a side'el e'vation partly in section of the milking. apparatus, which is adapted to be connected with the pumping mechanism, and Fig. Sis 'a plan of the apparatus illustrated in F lg. 2.
In the drawing A indicates a cylinder having a wall 2- across; its central portion midway ,between its ends for the purpose of forming the cylinder into two separate cylindrical chambers in each of which a piston suchas 3 is reciprocable. The cylinder is adapted to be mounted by bosses 4 on its side upon a stanchion or other suitable support in close proximity to the, cows which'a re to be milked. As many of these. cylinders may be provided with" their ac companying coiiperating parts as are desirable, a cyhnder preferably being employed v for every couple of cows to be milked. Connected with the pistons by piston rods such as 5 is a reciprocable operating shaft 6, which is-provided with socket pieces 7 into which the ends of the piston rods can be separably hooked to form an operable connection. The position of the socket members permits the fastening of the piston rods, so that a pair of the pistons will reciprocate in the cylinder, one piston being positioned at the inner end of a stroke while' Specification of Letters Peteiit.

The cylinder is formed with inlet ports 8 for the admission of air into the cylinder chambers when the pistons reach their outermost positions in the cyl inder. Located immediately below each nipple 18 or 19, which is mounted uponone of the coupling elements 14' or 15 are a pair of laterally extending ports 20 and 21 to which a pair of flexible milking tubes 22 and 23 are connected, the outer extremities of these milking tubes being provided with flexible teat. cups 24 of usual form, which are mounted thereon bymeans of the holders 25 in' the usual manner.
In order that suction may be produced first in one pair of teat cups and then in the other, which are mounted upon a pair of the milking tubes 22 and 23, the pulsator is provided with a flap valve 26, which is hung freely by a link 27 from the cover of the receptacle, said valvebeing positioned freely in the space between the adjacent ends of the downwardly extending incurved milk pocket ducts 16 and 17, so that when air is exhausted from one of said pipes 1601* 17 the valve closes that pipe and. allows the opposite one to open. freely into'the receptacle B allowing any milk which has collected in the open pipe to flow into the receptacle. The valve is reciprocated due tothe reciprocation of the pump, thus producing a pulsating action in each pair of milking tubes, and causing the milk which is drawn.
' from the cow through the milking tubes to first collect in one of the pocket ducts which is closed by the valve 26 and during the next pulsation of the valve to flow freely from said pocket duct into the receptacle while milk is being collected in the opposite pocket duct. By this construction, it will be observed that a simple and efiicient double acting apparatus is produced, which is capable of quickly milking a plurality of cows simultaneously. As soon as it is desired to discontinue the operation of the apparatus the connecting rods 5 can be disset forth within the scope of the following claims. i
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto protect by Letters .Patent is 1. A milking apparatus, comprising, in combination, a milking receptacle, a pair of coupling elements mountedupon said receptacle having milk pocket ducts extending downwardly from said coupling elements into said receptacle and terminating with their lower ends adjacent and spaced apart, aflap valve hung between said adjacent ends of said milk pocket ducts and adapted through the alternate drawing of air upwardly through said ducts to close one of said ducts and assist in forming a trap therein for milk and open the other and permit milk therein emptying into said receptacle, milking and suction tubes connected with said coupling elements and a pump connected with said suction tubes ports, a pair of milk pocket ducts in com munication with said ports and extending down into said receptacle, said milk pocket ducts being placed with their lower ends opening intosaid receptacle and positioned substantially adjacent and spaced slightly apart, a flap valve hung freely in the interval between the lower ends of said milk receiving pockets-and adapted to move freely to alternately open and close each of the openings in the lowerends of said milk receiving pockets, a double acting pump having a pair of cylinder chambers with pistons reciprocable therein, flexible connections leading from said chambers and connected with said coupling elements and a reciprocable prime mover with which said piston elements are adapted to be separably coupled, said piston elements being adapted to alternately exhaust air upwardly through first one of said milk receiving pockets and then the other.
3. In apparatus of the class set forth, a'
pulsator comprising in combination with a receptacle, a pair of coupling elements mounted upon a wall of said receptacle having milk receiving and air suctionports and downwardly and inwardly extending milk pocket ducts having openings at their lower ends'facing together and'spaced apart, and a fla valve movably supported to reciprocate reely in the interval 'between'said open ings and adapted to alternately close and open each of said openings. 4
