SPRING-BED CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE D. MIL- LER, PERRY D. MILLER, and JOHN O. GAD' BERRY, citizens of the United States, residand State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Spring-Bed Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a spring bed construction, and one object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which will present a flush upper surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for connecting the springs with each other, with the ties and with the frame portions of the bed.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 shows in top plan, a portion of a spring bed constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line,33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the upper portions of the springs and the ties; Fig. 5 is a perspective showing the manner in which the lower portions of the springs are assembled with the intersecting ties at the bottom of the bed; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view illustrating a modification of that portion of the structure depicted in Fig. 5.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a top frame 1 and a bottom frame 2 of any desired construction, opposed portions of the top frame 1 being connected by longitudinally extended stays, preferably in the form of wires 3 having upstanding bends 4 at intervals therein.
A plurality of helical springs are provided. The springs preferably are of spiral form, as shown in the drawings. The upper convolutions of each spring are denoted by the numeral 5 and in the upper convolution 5 there is formed an offset loop 6. The loop 7 Specification of Letters Patent.
6 passes across the top of the stay 3 and the bend 4: 1n the stay 3 is disposed between the v Patented May it, 1915. Application filed January 15, 1914. Serial No. 812,300.
side portions of the loop 6.- In the upper A convolution 5' of each spring, opposite to mg at Carthage, in the county of Jasperin a hoop 10 which is engaged in the tion of the frame 1 it will be observed that 4 the bend 4 of the stay and the bend 7 of the spring are disposed in adjacent and in overlapped relation. In the case of the outermost row of springs, the loop 6 is disposed adjacent the frame 1 and the hook 10 corresponding to the hook 10, is engaged around the frame 1 and around the end of the loop 6 The bends 7 of the outermost row of springs are disposed toward the bends 7 a of the second row of springs as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2 and a link 11 is provided for connecting these bends, the link 11 terminating at one end in an eye 12 which engages the bend 7' and terminating at its other end in an S-shaped hook 14 which passes around the bend 7 a in the spring and around the bend 4 in the stay.
Opposed portions of the bottom frame of the bed are united by intersecting stays 15 and 16. The stay 15 is bent upwardly as shown at 17 and the stay 16 is bent upwardly as shown at 18, thus to form shoulders 19 in the stay 15 and to form shoulders 20 in the tie 16. The lowermost convolution 21 of the spring passes inside of the shoulders 19 and outside of the shoulders 20 and terminates in a depending finger 22 engaging the stay and 24, the stay 23 being bent upward as at 25 to form shoulders 26 and the stay 24 having an upward bend 27 of less extent than the bend 25. The lowermost convolution of the spring is indicated at 28 and passes inside of the shoulders 26, in contact in Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a spring bed, a stay wire; a spring the terminal convolution of which is pro vided with a bend, and with a lateral loop disposed opposite to the bend and extending across thestay, the end of the terminal convolution being formed into an outstanding tongue which passes across the stay and across the end of the loop, the end of the tongue being connected with the first specified bend of an adjoining spring, the stay and the bend engaging opposed edges of the tongue.
2. In a spring bed, a stay wire having a bend; a spring the terminal convolution of which is provided with a bend and with a lateral loop disposed opposite to the bend and extended across the stay, the bend in the stay lying between the side portions of the loop, the end of the terminal convolution being formed into a tongue extended across the bend of the stay and across the end of the loop and passed between the bend of the stay and the end of the loop, the end of the tongue being connected with the first specified bend of the adjoining spring.
3. In a spring bed, a stay having a bend; a spring, one convolution of which is provided with a lateral loop, the bend in the stay lying between the side portions of the loop, the end of the said convolution of the spring being extended across the side of the loop and bent within the contour of the loop to form into a tongue which is extended be- 4';
