JACOB ROI-IR GROVE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GAGE-PIN FOR 'IYMPANS 0F PLATEN :PRINTING-PBESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed June 19, 1914. Serial No. 846,034.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB Rona Gnovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Pins for Tympansof Platen Printing-Presses, of which'the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for gage pins for tympans of printing presses. I
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates a blank from which the device is constructed. Fig. 2 is a plan illustrating the complete device in position for practical use. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating the stripper in set position in contact with steel spring. Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating the stripper placed for close margin of sheets. Fig. 5 is a front view, partly in section. Fig. 6 is a rear View, partly in section.
The entire device, save and eXcept a stripper, is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, preferably somewhat resilient, and is first formed into a blank (Fig. 1), preferably by stamping. The blank is then bent at right angles on the dotted line 10 and also at right angles on the dotted line 11. The blank is formed with spaced guide strips 12, 13 at one end, and an attenuated prong 14 between and spaced from said guide strips and preferably of somewhat greater length. The guide strips 12, 13 and prong 14. are bent at right angles on the dotted line 15 and are brought into approximately parallel relations with the main part of the blank or top piece 16. Thus a housing is formed, with a top 16, end portions 17, 18, a bottom composed of the guide strips 12, 13 and prong 14:, and with open sides.
In practical use, the gage pin is placed by causing the prong lt'to penetrate and pass beneath the tympan 21 and is adjusted to the desired location thereon. During plac ing, removing or adjusting of the gage pin, the rear wall 18 is slightly elevated and the pointed ears 19, 20 are noved along the upper surface of the tympan. When the de- C'opies of this patent may be obtained for sired adjustment is attained, the pointed ears 19, 20 are pressed down into the tympan. During such adjustment also, the spring stripper 25 preferably is in forward posi tion, as shown in Fig. 4c and in order to hold the said spring stripper in adjusted position is a detent spring 26 which bears against the under side of the stripper and by frictional contact holds same positively in any position desired. The ears 19, 20 prevent torsional movement of the gage pin on the tympan and prevent insertion of a sheet to be printed between the end portion 18 and said tympan. The end portion 18 of the housing serves to engage the margin of a sheet to be printed and gage the location thereof relative to a printing form. The stripper 25 may be adjusted longitudinally to any desired degree of pro ection from the rear wall 18 and in such position engages over the printed sheet and strips the same from the printing form.
In inserting the device, the guide strips at either side of the prong 14 have a tendency to hold the gage pin tightly to the tympan sheet. I
I claim as my invention 1. A blank for gage pins of generally rectangular form having a notch centrally of one end margin and slits at the margin opposite to the notch, an attenuated member between the slits and projecting beyond the slitted margin of the blank, short prongs at opposite sides of the slitted margin, longitudinally registering slots adjacent the notch and slitted margin respectively, said blank being adapted for bending and folding on various lines.
2. A gage pin for tympans, comprising a housing formed with a prong, the forward ends of the bottom members on opposite sides of said prong curved upwardly, registering slots in opposite ends of said housing, a stripper adjustably mounted through said slots, said stripper in contact with said spring, affording easy movement, and holds said stripper in any required position which it is placed to receive the sheets to be printed.
