Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
Application filed. November 17, 1914. Serial No. 872,601.
.insect destroyers, and more particularly to devices of this character which are commonly known as fly swatters, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the wire cloth or the like commonly used in ily swatters is detachably secured to the handle without the use of tacks, rivets, or like fastening members, so that it may be readily removed and replaced when it becomes unraveled, bent or tangled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and which is not rendered worthless after use for a short period of time because of the unraveling, bending or tangling of the wire cloth.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a. front elevation of a fly swatter constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, showing the position ofthe parts when the wire cloth is being placed in or removed from the handle. Fig. at is a similar vie-w showing the position of the parts when the wire cloth is securely locked within the handle. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the upper end ofthe handle in which the wire cloth is secured, the clamping slide being removed. Fig. is a detail perspective view of the clamping slide.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, the numeral l designates the handle of the swatter formed of comparatively thin material, the upper end of said handle being provided with an enlarged head 2. This enlarged head 2 is provided with a vertical longitudinal slit 3 extending downwardly from the upper end of the head so as to form two opposing clamping jaws t between which may be clamped a piece of wire fabric 5.
kOwing to their eXtreme thinness these two clamping jaws l are somewhat flexible and resilient so as to be easily forced together' and will spring apart when released. A transverse slot 6 extends through the head and clamping jaws and intersects'the slit 3. Each of the clamping jaws 4: is provided with an inclined'or cam face 7 which converges downwardly and inwardly from the outer lface of the jaw andV terminates at the intersection of the upper edge of the slot 6 with the inner face of the clamping jaw or the side of the slit 3. y
A clamping slide 8 which is adapted to fit loosely within the slot 6 in the head has its upper end bifurcated at 9, the two arms 10 of the bifurcation being provided with Vopposing inclined inner faces which are adapted to coperate with the inclined or cam faces 7 in the clamping jaws ai of the head 2 of the handle toclamp the wire fabric 5 therein. Suitable fingerholds such as the depressions 11 are provided at the lower end of the slide 8 so as to afford a rm grip upon the slide when operating the same.
In the operation of the device the clamping slide 8 is normally seated within the slot 6 in the head 2 of the handle, the said slide being held in position by the engagement of the inclined or cam faces 7 in the clamping jaws 4l with the inclined faces of the arms 10 of the bifurcation 9 of the slide.
Vhen it is desired to place a piece of wire fabric or the like in the handle l, the clamping slide S is placed in the position shown in Fig. 3 with the inclined faces of the arms 10 of the bifurcation 9 thereof loosely engaging the inclined or cam faces 7 in the clamping jaws 4. When the slide is in this position the slit 3 is open and the clamping jaws a separated and the wire cloth may be easily inserted between the said jaws. After the wire cloth is placed in the slit 3 between th'e clamping jaws 4: the clamping slide=8 is grasped and forced upwardly within the slot 6, the depressions 11 in the slide serving as finger holds. As the clamping slide is forced upwardly the inclinedfaces of the arms l0 of the bifurcation 9 thereof tightly engage the inclined faces 7 in the jaws 4 so as to force the said clamping jaws into a tight engagement with the wire cloth so as to hold the wire fabric firmly in the handle, as shown by Fig. 4. When it is desired to remove the wire fabric from the handle the clamping slide '8 is forced downwardly so as to disengage the inclinedfaces of the arms l0 of the bifurcation 9 thereof from the inclined faces 7 in the clamping jaws at so that the said jaws will spring apart and allow the wire cloth to be removed.
It will thus be seen that a very ei'licient means has been provided for ydetacliably securing a piece of wire fabric or other "desirable material ina handle lwithout the use of tacks or rivets and in such a manner that the wire fabric or the like may be easily and quickly removed and replacedwithout the use of any tools.
Having thus ydescribed the inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. lAfly swatter includingsa 'handle provided witha pair of clamping jaws having inclined faces thereon, wire fabric adapted to' be inserted'between the clamping jaws, and a slidehaving a bifurcated end constructed to engage the inclined faces of the jaws and to'coperate therewithto forcethe jaws together.
2. A fly'swatterincli'iding a handle provided with a pair of clamping jaws having oppositely inclinedfaces thereon, wirev fabric adapted to be inserted between the clamping jaws, and a bifurcated member having the arms thereof formed with inclined faces adapted to engage the 'oppositely inclined a slide'forined with inclined faces adapted 4to engage the inclined faces of the jaws and coperate therewith to force the jaws toward each other.
5. Afly swatter including a handle provided withk apair of clamping jaws having inclined faces thereinl anda transverse slot, wire fabric adapted to be inserted between the clamping-jaws, and a rclamping slide seated within said transverse slot and pro- -videdwvith a'bifurcated end,`the arms of saidbifurcation having opposed inclined faces, said inclined faces ofthe arms of the bifurcation cooperating with the inclined faces' in theclamping jaws for detachably l vsecuringthe 'wire fabric between the clamping jaws.
In ytestiinony'whereof I afliX my signature in 'presence of two witnesses.
