CHARLES J. KLEN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN,`ASSIGNOR T THE CUTLER-HAMMER MFG. CO., OF MILWAKE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION 0F WISCNSIN.
rilancio.
Application filed .August 26, 1912.
T0 all lwhom 'it may concern Be it known that l, CHARLES J. KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miln waukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lvisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches,
. of which the following is a full, clear, coneise, and exact description, reference being hadl to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to electric switches.
It has among its objects to provide an improved switch which is readily adapted to use in connection with the electric lamp sockets or other electric switch receptacles.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved switch base and an improved arrangement and constructionof conducting and terminal connections thereon `whereby the device may be made eX- ceedinglycompact, the parts are effectually insulated) from each other and the switch terminals are readily accessible.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction will hereinafter appear. ll-'in order that my invention may be fully and clearly disclosed, I have illustrated one embodiment of the same in the accompanying'xdrawings. It is to be understood, however, that` the construction shown is susi Y V ceptible of modification.
Figure 1 is a central sectional View of a lamp socket with my improved switch device in position therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the switch removed from the socket. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line B-- of Fig. 1. Fig. t is a side elevation of a construction shown in SlT-ig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the switch base shown in Fig. el, the threaded shell being removed. Fig. 6 is a bottom view ofthe switch base. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on line 7 7 of Fig. 2, the switch being removed. Fig. 8 e, perspective view of the movable contact member of the switch mechanism.
The insulating base-housing the switch mechanism and carrying the terminal conncctioiis therefor is divided vertically into two parts 1 and 2 whose inner adjacent surfaces are provided with irregular shaped recesses 3 and l1. ln these recesses the switch mechanism is housed and substantially sealed by the connectionof the twoy parts to Specification of Letters Patent.`

each other through a U shaped member 5 and the screws 6 and 7 engaging therewith. The base is of substantially oblong or rectangular cross section (Fig. 3) and provided with flat sides upon which the binding posts 8 and 9 are mounted upon terminal plates l() and 11. lamp shell l2 or other reseptacle oppositely extending angular lugs or extenion 13 are pr vided on the opposite sides of the same and at the upper end thereof.
Ilhe switch mechanism illustrated is of the push button type and of the same general construction as that described and claimed in my eo-pending. application Serial No. 623,903 filed April 28, 191i. This switch mechanism includes a reciprocable push button 14, 'cams 15 movin/g therewith and a movable contact member 16 pivoted upon a spindle 17 and actuated by said cams to com press a spring 18. At a predetermined position in the movement of the cams, this contact member 'is rotated with a quiclr snap action to make or break the circuitat resilient stationary contacts 19 and Q0.
The construction of the switch shown herein, however', differs specifically from that shown in the aforesaid application. In this construction the movable contact member 16 is formed of a single piece of stamped metal having overturned contact surfaces 2.1 at its enils extending substantially at right angles to the body of the contact. Afit points between its pivot point and each of the contact' surfaces 21., knob or nipple-like pro tuberances or bearing surfaces 22y are punched out of the body of the blank as shown in detail in Fig. 8. Further, the stationary contacts are of a different construction. Thel upper stationary contact 19 is provided with a flat base 23, having an eX- tension 2i .substantially at right angles thereto, to which is secured the resilient contact 19. This contact lies in a plane parallel with theplane of the rigid base. The contact :20 is shown in Figs. 1 and 7. ln this instance-the lower end of the contact is fixed to the bottom of the U shaped member 5 and is provided with a cut awa;1 portion 25, so that it may pass around the end of a screw 2G, hereinafter referred to, and have increased resiliency. Both of these contacts are formed of light resilient metal and are fixed to their bases by any suitable means, such for instance as riveting. In l vthis one embodiment of my invention, it is order to improve the contact Aand to give; an t `to be understood that the form shown herein arc shape to the active surface of the contact I is susceptible of Inodication.`
these contacts are slightly crimped or bent i 'What I claim as new and desire to: secure along vertical lines 27, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The stationary contact 19 is held in position by a screw 28, which extends throu h the base and serves as a means for fixing tie terminalplate 1Q upon one side of the same. The screw 26, heretofore referred to, is received in a lug 29 on the bottom of the U- shaped member 5 and extends downward through the base at one side of the same and with a companion screw 30 upon the opposite side of the base serves to cla-mp a plate 31 upon the upper overturned ends 32 of the threaded lamp shell 33. In Fig. 1 the inner therefor, members fixing said contacts to the end of the screw 30 is shown threaded into a cup shaped nut 34 carried in correspondingly shaped recesses 35 in the ladjacent wails of the base. The center contact 36 for the lamp or other device inserted within the threaded shell 33 is formed integral with the terminal plate 10 and extends through a suitable opening or cut away portion 37 at the upper end of the threaded-shell.; As shown in Fig. 6 a disk-like projection 38 upon the bottom of the base is located above,
the contact 36 and between the,` screws 26 and 30.
Assuming that suitable electrical connections are made to the binding posts 8 and 9 and that the switch is in open circuit position, as shown in Fig. 1, the circuit is closed when the push button is pushed to. the right. Assumin that the current enters through the binding post 9, the circuit connections' are .then as foliows: from the binding post 9, through the screw 28 to the. stationary Contact 19, through the movable contact 16, the stationary contact 20, the threaded shell 33, the device therein, and the center contact Cil y wall of insulation.
36 to the binding post 8;
When it is desired to remove lthe switch mechanism from the socket or other suitable receptacle, it is only necessar tp force the base upward to disengage t.e supporting lugs 13 lfrom their supports in the walls of the receptacle. f To gain accese' to the switch mechanism it is only necessar l,to remove one of the screws, 7. By coating the binding posts upon the sides of the base, the
same are' rendered readily accessible' and a substantial seat is provided for the same. Ii desired, suitable slantin conductor grooves 39 may be provided 1n the upper end of the base, which communicate with the binding posts (Fig. 3). These binding posts while directly connected to the switch mechanism are spaced therefrom by a solid The construction is exceedingly compact and may be readily and cheaply manufactured.
Vihile I have herein specifically described such switch mechanism, a terminal by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination, a casing, 'a two-part base having projections adjacent one end for supporting the same within said casing, the adjacent faces or" the parts of said base having complementary recesses in the plane of said projections, and a switch mechanism mounted in said recesses, the operating member of said switch mechanism extending. through lopposite walls of said base.
2. In combination, an elongated insulating base having flat sides, a switch mechanism housed therein, stationary contacts base and extending through the latter to the exterior thereof, terminal plates on the fiat sides of said base, one of said plates being fixed thereto by one of said members, and a threaded shell removably secured by the other member.
3. In combination, a switch base verticali divided into two sections, a snap switc 1 mechanism inclosed between the sections of said base, -stationary contacts therefor carried by one of the parts of said base, screws for fixing said contacts to said base, a threaded shell secured to said base by one o'f said screws, terminal plates carried on opposite sides of said base, one ot' said terminal plates being secured thereto by one of said screws and the other of said terminal plates being provided with an extension forming a center contact protruding into said shell.
4. In combination, a two-part vertically divided base havin Hat sides, a substantially U-shaped member olding the parts thereof together, a snap switch mechanism carried between said parts, vstatio'nary contacts 1for ate carried vupon one'of the Hat sides o Jthe bases, means for directl.V connecting one 0f said contacts with sai terminal plate, a threaded shell, means for directly connecting said shell with the other of said contacts, and a combined center contact and a terminal plate, said center contact-extending into said shell and saidterminal plate being carried upon the other Hat side of the base.
5. In combination, a vertically divided two-part base having 'lat vertical sides, a snap switch mechanism housed between the parts of said base, means for holding the parts of said base together, stationary contacts carried by one of the parts of said base, screws Jfor securing said stationary contacts to said base, said screws protruding through the walls of said base, a threaded shell directly connected to one of said rotruding screws, a terminal plate held 1n position upon one of the flat sides of said base by the other of'said screws and a second terminal in said body portion adjacent each of said.l
Contact portions. y
