Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed October 1, 1913. Serial No. 792,904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY D. DEMIRJEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Door-Latch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in door latches for all swinging doors, especially for barn doors or gates, and can be made to apply on any size of said doors or gates.
The object of my invention is to provide a more convenient latch for said doors or gates, convenient for several reasons: First, in fastening doors or gates; second, making doors or gates secure so that they can not be opened without operating the latch; third, can be opened from either side; fourth, can be locked with a padlock, and fifth: it is simple and durable in construction and can be very readily assembled and placed on door or gate for operation.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the latch bar guide. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the base plate. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the latch bar. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the spring housing. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the catch. Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of the coil spring for the latch bar. Fig. 7 is a detailed View of parts of the latch handle. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the assembled latch. Fig. 9 is a longitudinal, horizontal, central sectional view of the parts of the assembled device.
In the accompanying drawing I have used the reference numeral 20 to indicate gen erally the raised central portion of the latch bar guide. At the sides of the portion 20 are flanges 21 parallel to each other and extending at right angles to the plate 20. Formed on the flanges 21 are outwardly extending flanges 22, lying in the same plane and parallel with the plate 20. The central portion of the plate 20, at one end thereof, is cut away at 23, and at the end of the opening thus formed is a lug 2, extending away from the body of the plate 20 at right angles thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In the forward end of the plate 20 is an elongated slot 1. In the flanges 22 are screw holes 24. The base plate of my improved latch device is comprised of the plate 25, on which the flanges 22 are adapted to rest. The plate 25 is provided with screw holes 26 arranged to register with the holes 24 when the latch bar guide is superimposed on the base plate 25. The base plate 25 is of the same length as the latch bar guide 20. In the forward end of the base plate 25 is an elongated slot 3, which registers with the slot 1 in the assembled device. At the rear end of the base plate 25 is an upturned extension 4, which may be formed with shoulders 5 near its lower end, and which is of the same width as the member 2. The latch bar 27, shown in Fig. 3, is of such width as to slide readily between the members 21. The latch bar 27 is provided with a slot 6 at its forward end, adapted to engage a keeper. At its rear end the latch bar 27 is provided with a lug 8, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
In the assembling of my device, the latch bar guide is superimposed on the base plate 25 with the latch bar 27 received between said guide and base plate. The latch bar 27 is moved to the rearward position of its movement, with its member 8 adjacent to the member 4, as shown in Fig. 9, and a coil spring 10 is then placed between the member 8 and the member 2. It will be seen that the coil spring 10 tends to hold the latch bar 27 at the limit of its movement rearwardly. For moving the latch bar 27 against the pressure of the spring 10, I have provided a two part handle, compris ing the members 14 and 17, having the internal screw threaded portion 15 and external screw threaded portion 16 extended through the opening 7 and screwed into the portion 15, whereupon the handle members 14 and 17 will travel in the slots 1 and 3 and by means of said handle members the latch device may be worked from either side of the door on which the device is mounted. It will of course, be understood that the door must be provided with a slot to register with the slot 3. The base plate 25 is secured to the flanges or members 22 and to the door by means of screws 18. I provide a suitable housing 9 for the spring, which may be secured in any suitable way to the latch bar guide 20. The keeper or catch device is provided, comprising the flat plate 13 and the beveled lateral exten sion 12, having the notch 28 to receive the latch bar, and the hole 11 for receiving a padlock or the like.
I claim as my invention: 7
In a device of the class described, a base plate having an elongated slot at one end and having a right angled extension at the other end of less Width than the Width of the base plate, a latch bar guide compris ing a flat plate having an elongated slot designed to .neg'ister with said first mentioned slot, side portions .for spacing said latch bar guide plate from the base plate, and flanges on said extensions secured to said base plate, the plate oi? said latch ,gu-ide vdevice having its central portionat one end acut away and having near its middle a right angled extension adapted to extend in a plane parallel with said base plate, a latch bar having at one end an elongated slot, and vhaving at the other end a right angled extension, said the extension .011,
' latch bar being arranged sto trave'lin the space between the plate of said latch bar guide device and said base plate, With an extension :on said latch bar between the first two described extensions, a housing restin-g upon said first tWo extensions and on the plate of said latch bar guide device, said latch bar being provided also with an opening through it, detachable handles secured to each other and extended through the elongated openings in said .basegplate and said latch bar guide device and being secured to each othelyand a coil spring in said housing between the extension on-said latch bar and one of the other extensions.
ROY D. 'DEMIRJEAN.
