OVEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed November 7, 1912. Serial No. 730,028.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS VIoAns, JOHN VIoARs, and EDWARD LYNTON VIoAns, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Earlesto-wn, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ovens which are used chiefly for baking biscuits carried on trays on endless traveling chains, and have fiues at top and bottom, and our object is to construct such ovens with the flues and fireplaces so arranged that the ovens can be more uniformlyand efficiently heated than hitherto and with less fuel; and the heat can be varied as desired in difierent parts of the oven.
The invention is hereafter described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure 1' is a longitudinal section at A. A. on Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at C. C. on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at D. D. on Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section at E. E. on Fig. 2, and Fig. '5 is a cross section at B. B. on Fig. 1, all of an oven constructed according to our invention. V
In carrying out the invention and referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4L and 5 we arrange the fines a, b, at topand bottom of the oven zigzag longitudinally, the outlets c, d, therefrom leading into zigzag or recurved flues e formed in the sides f of the oven. One or more fire places 9 are arranged below the oven, preferably at one end as shown, and preferably with reheating flues it over the furnace crowns i, and damper controlled passages j, 70 lead therefrom to the upper and lower zigzag flues respectively. Damper controlled fines Z also lead from the fire places directly to the chimney flue m. The outlets or of the recurved fines 6 also lead to the chimney flue m. By suitably manipulating the dampers the heat may be maintained more uniform over the whole length of the oven, the recurved side flues maintaining the heat at the sides; while owing to the length of the zigzag fines the heat is most effectually utilized and escape of gases at excessive temperatures avoided; or the heat may be arranged to be greater at one part of the oven than another by damping the fines at one side; or the top or bottom fines or any of them may be regulated or entirely cut off from the fires, the gases, or part of them, then going through the other fines, or directly to the chimney if a quick drop in temperature of the oven is desired. In the above arrangement the inlets or passages y', 70, from the fires lead into the zigzag flues near the center line of the oven, the outlets 0, cl, being at the sides but they may be arranged in the opposite manner.
The arrows show the direction of flow of the gases, the solid arrows being in and from the bottom fines, and the dotted arrows in and from the top fines. The above arrangement allows also most conveniently for all the dampers to be operated from the i one end of the oven.
What we claim is 1. The combination with ovens of top and bottom fines constructed in a zigzag direction longitudinally of the oven, each flue having at one end an inlet for fire gases from the furnaces, and at the other end an outlet leading into longitudinally arranged zigzag fines in the side walls of the oven and thence to a chimney, substantially as described.
2. The combination with ovens of top and bottom fines constructed in a zigzag direction longitudinally of the oven, each fiue having at one end an inlet for fire gases from the furnaces, and at the other end an outlet leading into longitudinally arranged zigzag flues in the side walls of the oven and thence to a chimney, and re-heating fines over the furnace crowns, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
