Description
R. J. MONTGOMERY.
AUTOMOBILE WASHING BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 6, 1913.
Patented M31130, 1915.
To all whom it may concern I iaaaaad Be it known that T, ROBERT J. MoN'rcoM ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook-and State 1 of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Automobile Washing-Brushes, of which the following is a specification. a
a My invention relates to brushes, and particularly to brushes equipped with means for discharging water upon the object operated upon by the brush, such brushes be ing especially adapted for use in washing automobiles, carriages, etc. a The object of my invention is to provide such a brush in .which the brush member will be removable; to provide improved means for receiving and supporting the brush in operative position; to provide improved locking means for securing it in position; and to provide an improved water supply connection for supporting the brush anddischarging water therethrough. 1 accomplish these objects as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the drawings.
What I regard as new is set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,--Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device, showing the brush in position, the brush be ing partly broken away to show the outer end of the brush support; Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the wire'or equivalent flexible member which carries the bristles and by which the brush is secured to the support; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the brush sup porting device, which also forms the water connection through which wateris supplied to it; Fig. 4 is a detail, illustrating the outer end of the support; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the locking c'ollar..
Referring to the drawings,-6 indicates the brush, which in the construction shown,
comprises a central flexible support 7, which is practically a twisted wire, but may be made of any other suitable material. The wire 7 is bent into a kite shape, as shown in Fig. 2, its ends, however, being straight and parallel with each other, as shown at 8 in said figure. Near its ends the wire is provided with opposing notches 9 on its inner face, which are used in locking the brush in position, as will be hereinafter described.
The brush support and water connection comprises a tube 10, which is provided at one end with a screw coupling 11, by which AUTOMOBILE wasnme-nansn.

of water supply.
12 indicates a hand-piece in the form of a sleeve fitted upon the tube 10, as shown in Fig. 3. At its opposite end the tube 10 car- ROBERT J. MONTGOMERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Y "itmay be attached to a hose, or other source I ries a cap 13, which is secured thereupon and is provided with two opposite perforations 14, shown in Fig. 3.
15 indicates a- U-shaped clip which is that it may be rotated either to close the the-brush against lateral movement.
as I mounted upon the cap 13 by. a pivot 16, so
19 indicates a locking member in the form of a collar, which is fitted upon the tube 10, between the handle 12 and the sleeves l7.
- As best shown in Figs.v 1 and 3, the collar 19 is provided with a knurled flange 20 at its lower margin and with oppositely-disposed laterally-projecting lugs 21 at its upper margin, said lugs'being adapted to engage the notches 9 in the wire 8 when the wire is in position in the sleeves 17. At their lower ends said sleeves 17 are cut away, as shown at 22 in Fig. 3, to permit the lugs 21 to move into engagement with the notches 9 when the collar 19 is rotated for that purpose. The locking collar 19 is free to move longitudinally upon the tube 10, so that when not in engagement with the wire 8, it
feet which prevents accidental displacement of the collar with the ends of the wire. The clip 15 straddles the wire and holds the intermediate portion of the brush against v in, place the end portions of supporting member. 2. A device of the character described,
lateral displacement, but when the Water is turned on it is discharged in jets through the lateral openings 18 and through the endportions. 14; hen it is desired toremove the. brush, the collar 19 is partly rotated,
, thereby releasing the "wire 7 and permitting the brush to be removed.
not desired/to dis'chargenvater through the end openings 14 they may be closed by rotating the clip 15 to lies said openings; 1
1 That which 31' claim as my invention, and desire to secureby' Letters Patent, is,'
Water discharging openings through" its weand having it coupling at one end, a; cap at the otherf end of the tube, said cap having an "opening" 'therethrough, a clip pivotally mounted on the cap and adapted to be ad justed to cover the opening in the capfa brush supporting member heldin place at its central portion by said pivoted clip, and
other means carried by the tube for holding comprising. a tube, a couplingat one end thereof, a cap at the other end of said tube, lateral perforations in the latter portion of said tube, sleeves mounted intermediately upon said tube, a brush-supportingmember having projecting ends adapted to fit into i a position whereit oversaid; brushsaid sleeves, a brush carried by said brushsupporting membeiv-and movable means for locking the ends of said brush-supporting member in said sleeves.
3. A device of the character described comprising a tube, a coupling at one end thereof, a cap at the other end of said tube lateral perforations in the latter portion of said tube, sleeves mounted intermediately upon said tube, a brush-supporting member supporting member, and a clip carried by said cap and adapted to engage said brushg v supporting member intermediately. v 1; device jof the character =dese "bed, comprising ineombination, a-tube' havin a-A' device" of: the character described,
lateral perforations in the latter portion oi said tube, sleeves mounted intermediately upon said tube, a brush-supporting member having'projecting ends adapted to fit into said sleeves, a brush carried by said brushsupporting. member, and a collar mounted on said tubeand movable longitudinally thereof, jsaid collar having laterally project ing portions adapted to engage notches in the end portions of the brush-supporting member when the latter are in position in said sleeves.
