APPLICATION FILED AUG.24, 1914 1, 1 32, 1 78; Patented Mar. 16, 1915.

GEORGE W. GRANT, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
NAIL-PULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed August 24, 1914. Serial No. 858,291.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GRANT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail- Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nail pullers and particularly to a novel nail puller designed for use in opening boxes, cases or the like, the said invention having for its object the provision of novel means whereby the nail engaging member may be pivoted or fulcrumed with relation to or on a support in a manner to permit the changing of the position of the fulcrum with relation to the said element.
The purposes of providing the implement with the novel characteristics just mentioned are to permit the pulling of a nail without bending it, to facilitate raising of box lids by enabling the operator to force the lid raising element under the said lid without moving the fulcrum of the said element or disturbing the anchoring of the fulcrum carrying member. By changing the position of the nail pulling member with relation to its fulcrum, the puller can be operated so as to draw the nail vertically or axially and obviate any bending of the said nail.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a nail puller by which the nail pulling element is held in assembled relation with the fulcrum carrying element, so that it will not be detached or separated therefrom.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of the nail puller embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a plan view thereof, partly in section; Fig. 3 illustrates a view in elevation of the nail puller applied to a box; and Fig. 4: illustrates a view in elevation of the puller with the parts in the position to raise the nail vertically.
In these drawings 5 denotes the claw of the nail pulling element, said claw being integral with the shank 6 and the shank 6 in turn being integral with the handle 7. The shank 6 is fiat and has a slot 7 through which the pivot or fulcrum 8 extends, the end of the said pivot having a flange 9 which retains the shank in place on the pivot. The pivot 8 is carried by an anchoring member consisting of an anchoring spur 10 and a handle 11 by which the spur is manipulated and held while the nail drawing member is moved and manipulated with respect thereto.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, the nail pulling element may. be moved to different positions of adjustment with relation to the anchoring device and the anchoring device may likewise be moved to engage diiferent portions of a box so that the nail pulling member may be moved to produce the best results.
In Fig. 3 the spur or anchoring member 10 engages the side of the box and supports the nail pulling member so that it may be forced under the lid of a box and as the lid is loosened and raised the nail pulling element may be slid under the cover so that it will prove most effectual in dislodging or removing said cover.
In Fig. 4, the nail puller is shown as being used on the surface of a box, the anchoring member being applied to the top of the box and the handle thereof being held so that the pivot of the nail pulling element may be elevated or lowered with respect to the surface of the box, thus enabling the operator to change the position of the fulcrum so that the nail pulling element will operate to pull the nail vertically rather than laterally. As shown in Fig. 4, therefore, the supporting member and nail puller may be manipulated conjointly so as to produce the desired result, that is to say to accomplish the removal of the nail without bending it and change the fulcrum so that the power re quired for removing the nail will be minimized.
I claim 1. A nail puller, comprising handles pivotally connected together, one of the handles terminating in a spur and the other handle terminating in a claw, each handle having a shank portion, one of the shank portions having a slot, a pivot pin secured to the opposite shank, said pin adapted to move in said slot whereby the pivot point between the handles is changed during the manipulation of the handles.
2. In a. nail puller, a nail pulling element comprising a claw, a shank and offset handle, an anchoring member comprising a spur shank and olfset handle, one of the shanks having an elongated slot, a pivot pin carried by the anchoring member and adapt- Goples of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of 'Patents,-
ed to operate in the elongated slot to allow an adjustment of the pivot pin of the anchoring member and the nail pulling element whereby the initial position of the spur will be adjacent the claw.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
