Sppeciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar; 9,1915;
. Application filed` July 10, 1913. Serial No. 778,373.
To all whom t 'may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM PLAGG, a citizen Vof .the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of llashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Container- Covers, of which the following is a specifi` cation.
. This invention relates to a new and useful cover-for containers.
The primary object of this invention is a provision of a transparent cover for containers or jars such as are used in displaying and retaining various types of food stuffs, such as pickles, sauer krant or the like and one which is so constructed that the food stuffs or the like contained within a container may be taken therefrom without th necessity of removing the cover. Y
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in suchv novelty features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved cover. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of a cover. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view through a portion of the cover.
Referring more particularly to the drawings by numeral, 1 designates the outer rim of the improved cover which is circular in cross section and is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal which is bent upwardly as at 2, and again bent upon itself as is shown at 3 forming a solid and substantial base 4. The interior of the base portion 4 engages the outer surface of the vessel (not shown) or other container upon which the lid is to be mounted.
The upper edge of the side l is bent inwardly at right angles to the sides of the rim 1 as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. A recess 4 is left between the under surface of the rim 5 and the upper edge of the base portion 4 of the rim and substantially two-thirds of the entire surface with the rim 1 has glass or other transparent material mounted therein. The glass or other transparent material which is mounted in the recess 4 is formed in Vtwo pieces 7 and Seach of which are. substantially one-third of the size of the area ofthe circle within the rim l. The two sections 7 and 8 of the transparent material are braced by two metallic strips 9 and 10.which extend radially from the center of the circle within the rim 1 and are securely held together by means of rivets or the like 11.
A bolt 20 is revolubly mounted within the intersecting ends of the braces 15, 9 and 10 and has an auxiliary frame 21 which is shaped so as to coincide or form a cover for the segment of the area of the circle within the rim 1 which does not have the transparent sections 7 or 8 mounted therein. The auxiliary frame 21 is rigidly carried by the bolt 2O and moves about the rim 1 with the bolt 20 as a pivoting point. The frame 21 is also constructed of sheet metal and has a section 22 of transparent material such as glass or the like carried thereby.
The frame 21 has a knob 23 secured thereto so as to be conveniently operated by a Y person.
A pin 24 is mounted upon the upper side of the rim 1 and forms a means for limiting the movement of the frame 21.
When it is desired to remove any of the contents from the vessel (not shown) upon which the improved cover is placed, the frame 21 is moved upon its pivoting point so as to leave open the segment of the circle within the rim l which is not covered by one of the sections 7 or 8 of transparent material and the contents of the container is removed through the opening in said segment.
Vhen the desired amount of the contents of the container has been removed, the frame 21 is moved upon its pivoting point so as to coincide with or form a covering for the opening'through the segment of the circle which does not have the section of the transparent material therein and thus a sani tary covering or cover is formed for various types of'containers and one by means of which it will be possible to remove the contents from a container without removing the cover therefrom.
In practical fields certain minor features of construction may necessitate alterations to which the patentes is entitled provided such alterations are brought within the scope of what is claimed.
l vWhat is claimed is 1. A cover comprising a rim formed from a strip of sheet material bent longitudinally to form inner and outer leaves, the inner leaf having its upper edge portion bent between said leaves to .form a substantially solid base, the outer leaf extending above said in ner leaf and having its edge'portion bent to forma .lange extending inwardlyT above the upper edge of said inner leaf and providing a seat, a stationary closure partially filling said rim and havingits outer edge portion seated in said seat anda movable closure pivotally connected with said stationary closure and having its outer edge portion resting upon said rim.
2. A cover comprising a riml having a substantially solid lowerzportion and provided with an upperfiange overhanging the lower portion to form a seat, a station;- ary closure having its outer edgeJ portion seated in said seat, said closure partially filling the space inolosed by said rim, and a movable closure having its inner end pivotally connected with said stationary closure and having its outer edge portion resting upon said rim.
3. A cover comprising a rim provided with an internal lannular seat, a stationaryV closure partiallyfilling the space inolosed by said rim, and having its ,outer edgefportion fittingwithin said seat,va binding for the free edges of said stationary closure provided with an upper flange'extending over the same and with lower tongues extendingy edge portion resting vupon said riin wherebysaid movable closure may be swung fromr a closed position to an open position;
In'testiniony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
