Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1215..
Original application filed December 12, 1912, Serial No. 738,276. Divided andthis application filed November 13, 1913, Serial No. 800,763. Renewed January 21, 1915. Serial No. 3,635.
dent of New Rochelle, county of Vest-V chester, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SashiPulleys and WindowFrames, of which the following isa specification.
This is a division of my application filed.
December 12, 1912 and allowed May 7, 1913, Serial No. 736,276.
Heretofore when three sashes have been hung side by side so as to form a triple wim dow, and the weights have been suspended in wells at each side of the windows but not between any two of them, it has been necessary to fix some of these pulleys in the win-. dow frame before the same is inserted in a building, with the result that when a pulley became broken or otherwise injured so as to be unfit for use, it has been impossible to repair or renew the pulley without mutilating the frame or the building.
The object of my invention is to provide a pulley which can be either inserted or removed after the frame is in place and after the building is otherwise complete, so as to in no way interfere with the frame or otherparts of the building when the pulleys and sashes are inserted. This object is accomplished by my invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter set forth.
For a more particular description of my invention, reference is to be had to the no companying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Y Figure 1 is a sectional View of a frame provided with my improved pulley. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved pulley in its detached condition, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of a triple window embodying my invention.
- Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts. p
In Fig. 1 is shown the left-hand side of the upper portion of a frame, in section, of a triple window, the other corner being symmetrical therewith, so that a description of one will answer for both. The frame 1 is placed below a lintel (not shown) and is provided with four wells, 2, 3, 4E and 5 in which suitable sash weights 6 are hung by chains 7 and S or other suitable means. These chains 7 and 8 pass over suitable pulleys 9 and 10, both of which are mounted in the top of the-frame 1, the pulley 10 being a double pulley, that is, a pulley with two sheaves mounted on a single spindle, so that one end of the chain 8 can go over one sheave and the other end over the other, with the result thatone weight can balance a sash. The chain 7 balances only half a sash, and so runs over a single sheave 11 mounted on a spindle 12 in the casting or hood 13 of the pulley 9. The casting 13 is provided with a suitable base 1-1 with an interior slot 15, into which extend suitable guiding lugs 16 between which is formed a. suitable groove that receives a flange 1'? at the lower edge of the casting 13. This casting 13 is preferably made in the shape of a hood so as to cover the sheave and protect the rear face of the same. The front and lower faces are open so as to allow for the insertion or removal of the chain 7. A portion of the casting 13 is cut away at 18 to form a recess which will enable this hood or casting to get close to the pulley 10 without interfer- 7 ing with thesame.
By reference to Fig. 5 the advantages of my invention will be apparent. Here the lower sashes of the window are designated 20 and 21, the sash 21 being placed in the middle window between the sashes 20 and 20. To avoid confusion only the lower sashes are shown in each instance. From this view it is clear that the center sash 21 is provided with the chains 7 which run over the pulleys 22 to the pulleys 11, as above described, whereby the sash 21 is always counterbalanced. It is not possible to put sash weights in the parts 24 of the frame which separate the sashes 21 and 22, because the parts are not wide enough to permit this. The sashes 20 are supported by the chains 8 which run over the pulleys 23 and 10, as shown. It will be noted that when the sashes are balanced, as above indicated, the counter-weights 6 are at each side of the triple window.
From the foregoing the use and operation of my improved pulley will be readily understood. When the sash frame is built, suitable mortises are made for the pulleys 9 and 10 and the other pulleys (not shown), and suitable openings are made for the chains. The base 14 for each pulley 9 is 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for made for the purpose. W hen the sash frame is in the building and ready for use,
a casting or hood 13 for each base ll with its sheave 11 mounted on a spindle 12 is passed through the opening left for the pul- -,';1ey l and shifted'until the flange 17 engages the lugs 16 and is shoved home so that the base 1 5 securely holds this casting or hood-'13. The chain 7 and the parts connected therewith are then put in position the chainpassi-ng through the sheave 11 and then the pulley is put in place after which the chain 8 and theparts connected therewith aresuitably mounted. The placing of 'thepulley 10 secures the casting 13 so that the same cannot be moved enough so as to interfere in'any Way with the operation of the pulley 9.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures that come Within the scope of the annexed claim.
What I claim is:
A indow frame having a pair of Wells for sash Weights in substantial alinement With the plane of the Window frame, a base mounted on the frame to overhang the outer Well, a hood having a pulley journaled therein removably mounted on said base and a second hood and pulley having a base mounted on the frame to overhang the inner Well, the second hood being arranged to prevent the removal of the first hood and pulley;
ULYSSES G. MCQUEEN.
