T all whom it-may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. OGLnsBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoves of the type suitable for heating stores and dwellings, my more particular purpose being to produce a stove adapted for great economy in the use of fuel, and so constructed that if made of small size it does a comparatively large amount of heating.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section through my improved stove; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the stove, and is taken in a plane crossing that of the section upon which Fig. 1 is taken; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation showing the fire dome and the frusto-conical drum encircling the same; Fig. 1 is a section on the line 4-4c of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The base of the stove is shown at 5, and is mounted upon supporting legs 6. The ash pit appears at 7 and the closure member of the ash pit is shown at 8. The fire pot appears at 9, its bottom being closed by a grid 10. Connected with the fire pot and extending upwardly therefrom is a fire dome 11 having substantially the form of a truncated cone.
A drum 13 having the general form of a frustum of a cone encircles the fire dome 11. This fire dome carries a number of radially disposed ribs 12 (see Fig. 4) which'engage the lower inner surface of the drum 13. The fire dome 11 and the drum 13 are together provided with an opening 14. A grid 15 is located partially within the fire pot and partially within the fire dome 11. The purpose of this grid is to admit air into the fuel as the latter burns. A defiector 16 having a general annular form is carried by the fire dome 11, and encircles the upper portion of the fire pot 9. A valve 17 is carried by the deflector 16 and serves to control admission of air through the grid 15. The fire dome 11 carries upon its top a number of ribs 18 disposed parallel. with each other, as may be understood from Figs.
1 and 2. An outer drum 19 having a substantially cylindrical form encircles the drum 13. An air inlet 20, having a general annular form, is provided for the purpose of facilitating an air draft up through the drum. 13, the air passing between the ribs 12 and also between and over the ribs 18.
The stove door appears at 21, and is provided with an air valve 22, the latter reaching inwardly toward the opening 14 as indicated in Fig. 1.
The top plate of the stove is shown at 2 and rests upon the upper edge of the drum 19. A deflector 24 of annular form is integral with the top plate 23 and encircles the upper edge of the drum 19. A crown ring 25 is carried by the top plate 23 and is provided with a grid 26 for discharging heated air into a room. The crown ring 25 is also provided with an annular flange 27, suitable for supporting an oven or a culinary vessel. The smoke pipe appears at 28 and communicates with the space between the inner drum 13 and the outer drum 19. The ribs 12 carried by the fire dome 11 are quite massive and have considerable radiating surface. The fire pot 9 may, if desired, be provided with ribs like those shown at 12.
The operation of my device is as follows :The parts being assembled and arranged as shown and a fire being started in the fire pot 9, the smoke and gases of combustion pass through the opening 14: and upwardly, traveling obliquely around the inner drum 13, and out through the smoke pipe 28. This heats the fire dome 11, and heat isthereupon radiated from the ribs 12 and 18. The cool air of the room is drawn by convection through the annular passage 20 and thence carried upwardly between the ribs 12, becoming heated as it does so, and consequently cooling the ribs 12 and fire dome 11 to a moderate extent. The air then passes between and over the ribs 18 and upwardly through the inner drum 13 and crown ring 25. Owing to the form of the parts the air thus passing upwardly through the stove pursues a path which may roughly be described as oblique relatively to the general path controlled by the smoke and gases of combustion. The air path crosses the path of travel of the smoke and gases and by doing this becomes heated equally. The cool air passing upwardly between the ribs 12, by slightly chilling the latter, serves to check the updraft between the ribs 12; the
parts immmediately associated with these ribs act, therefore, together with the ribs, so as to serve to some extent the purpose of damper mechanism. In other words the updraft between the ribs 12 is to some extent self-regulating, owing to the fact that the chilling efiect of the cool air thus passing upwardly tends indirectly to retard the draft.
The stove above described possesses a number of advantages, relating to economy of fuel. Besides this the construction is well adapted to enable the stove to be employed in a number of other relations which I do not deem it necessary here to describe.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown as variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my lnvention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. In a stove, the combination of a fire pot, a fire dome connected with said fire pot and practically covering the same, said fire dome being provided externally with a' plurality of ribs radiating from it, an outer drum encircling said fire dome and extending upwardly from the same, an inner drum encircled by said outer drum and provided with a portion encircling said fire dome and engagingsaid ribs, means for admitting air between said ribs and means for dischargengaging said radially disposed ribs thereof,
the space between said outer drum and said inner drum communicating with said opening in said fire dome, means for admitting air into said opening, a smoke pipe communicating with the space between said outer drum and said inner drum, and means for admitting air between said radially extending ribs carried by said fire dome, and means for the discharge from said inner drum of the air thus admitted between said ribs.
