ANDRE? WJ'AZANKO, OF ROfiSITER, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 233, 1915.
Application filed. November 5, 1914s Serial No. 870,333.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anemia VVJAZANKO, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Rossiter, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail joints.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a joining means for two adjacent rail ends which will. firmly lock the same together by means of web-engaging plates and without the employment of any spanning bolts or screws projected through the web.
A further object is the provision of-interengaging plates substantially right-angular in cross-section and engaging the opposite faces of the webs and base flanges of the adjacent rail ends and adapted by means of locking plates of similar cross section for forming a secure joint, the securing to the ties being only at the edges of the base flanges.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrange-- ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail joint of the present construction with the spikes removed. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinalsectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken upon line HIHI of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an end portion of one of the rails. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the joint-forming angle plates, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the locking plates.
Referring more in detail to the drawings the end portions 10 and 11 are illustrated as secured together by means of the present device, the web portions 12 of eachrail being provided with rectangular openings 13 and 14 positioned adjacent the base flanges 15 of the rails and the openings 13 which are positioned nearer the ends of the rails than the openings 14- being of greater dimensions.
Engaging plates 16 and 17 are provided for connecting the ends of the rails together and are substantially right-angular in crosssection. The base flanges 15 of the rails are provided with open notches 18 at the outeredges, while the base flanges 19 of both of the engaging plates 16 are provided on their lower faces with projecting lugs 26 which of the rails and seated beneath the tread 22 thereof.
The plate 16 has its upright flange 21'provided with spaced lugs 23 which are so spaced as to be received within the openings 13 of the webs of the adjacent rails while the plate 17 has similar lugs 2 1 which are rela tively smaller and are positioned a greater distance apart than the lugs 23. and are adapted to seat within the smaller openings 14 of the rail webs.
With the engaging plates operatively positioned upon the rail ends as illustrated in Fig. 3 two locking plates 24.- are provided substantially right angular in cross section and adapted to conform to the outer configuration of the engaging plates 16 and 17 respectively and having openings 25 through the base flanges 26 thereof which openings 2d are positionable in vertical alinement with edge notches 27 of the base flanges 19 of the engaging plates.
From this detailed description of the device the complete operation thereof will be apparent in that the engaging plates are positioned connecting the adjacent rail ends by inserting the lugs 23 and 2a within the openings 1.3 and 14 respectively of the rail webs while the lugs 20 of the engaging plates are fitted into the notches 18 of the base flanges of the rail. The locking plates are then positioned upon the engaging plates and spikes 28 are driven through the openings 25 of the locking plates and the notches 4 27 of the engaging plates thus locking the members firmly together and the ends of the rails are accurately secured in longitudinal alinement.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and" scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. A rail joint comprising in combination With the end portions of adjacently positioned rails provided With transverse open.- ings through the Webs thereof, angular engaging plates having edge notches in their base flanges, projecting lugs carried by said plates inter-engagea'ble With the base flanges of said rail ends, rectangular projections Carried by said plate adapted for seating Within the said Web, opening, and angular locking plates overlying said engaging I plates and provided with openings in vertical alineinent with the notches of said engaging plates( 2. A rail joint com rising adjacent rail ends having edge notches in the base flanges thereof and also havingspaced openings of unequal size positioned through the Webs Copies-of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the thereof and adjacent the base flanges, engaging plates substantially right-angular in cross section and provided with spaced edge notches, lugs rectangular in cross section upon said engaging plates adapted for seating Within said edge notches of the base flanges of the rails, rectangular projections of different sizes upon said engaging plates engageable with the Web openings of corre sponding dimensions, angular locking plates provided with openings and positionable upon said engaging plates with said openings in vertical alineinent with the edge notches of said engaging plates, and spikes secured to said last-named openings and notches.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
