Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to the field of fluid conduit repair and coupling sleeves, and more particularly to an improved pipe coupling sleeve and gasket assembly.
- split repair and encapsulating sleeves or clamps are used in the repair or reinforcement of pipes.
- conventional assemblies for coupling and sealing adjacent ends of two adjacent pipe sections include a sleeve, shell or collar with each pipe end extending into a respective end of the sleeve. Gaskets are placed between the sleeve and each pipe end, respectively, such that tightening the sleeve to the pipe sections compresses the gasket against the pipe ends, thereby sealing the pipe coupling to the pipes.
- Some split ring type pipe couplings utilize a gasket having a plurality of layers integrally connected to each other.
- the inner layer typically defines an opening adapted to receive small diameter pipe ends and, when it is desired to couple a larger diameter pipe end than cannot fit through the inner layer opening, one or more of the layers may be manually removed from the gasket to increase the size of the gasket opening to accommodate the larger diameter pipe.
- U.S. Pat. No. 6,168,210 entitled “Pipe Coupling,” discloses a sleeve, flanges and gaskets that are coupled together via bolts to compress the gaskets against pipe ends as the flanges are drawn towards each other.
- U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2010/0327576 entitled “Pipe Coupler and Gasket With Positive Retention and Sealing Capability,” discloses a coupler which provides positive retention of a gasket about the circumference of the coupler.
- U.S. Pat. No. 8,776,351 entitled “Split-Ring Gland Pipe Coupling With Corrugated Armor,” discloses a pipe coupling for coupling adjacent ends of a pair of pipes that includes a sleeve, a split-ring gland positioned around one of the ends of the sleeve, and an annular gasket positioned within the split-ring gland and configured to be compressed by the split-ring gland for sealing one pipe end to the sleeve.

- each of cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C in outer gasket layer 340 is defined by inwardly-facing frusto-conical side surface 302 , outwardly-facing annular shoulder surface 303 , inwardly-facing frusto-conical side surface 304 , and inwardly-facing circular bottom surface 305 .
- Each of protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C of inner gasket layer 330 is defined by outwardly-facing frusto-conical side surface 306 , inwardly-facing annular flange surface 307 , outwardly-facing frusto-conical side surface 308 , and circular end surface 309 .
- protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C of inner gasket layer 330 are forced into and interface with cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C in outer gasket layer 340 , opposed annular surfaces 307 and 303 of protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C and cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C, respectively, axially overlap.
- annular shoulder 303 of cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C faces opposed annular flange 307 of protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C to form gasket layer connections 300 A, 300 B and 300 C, respectively.
- the material strength of separation areas 301 A, 301 B and 301 C of inner gasket layer 330 relative to the strength of mechanical connections 300 A, 300 B and 300 C is such that protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C will separate from the body of inner gasket layer 330 at separation areas 301 A, 301 B and 301 C under an applied separation force between inner gasket layer 330 and outer gasket layer 340 prior to protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C separating from outer gasket layer 340 at overlap connections 300 A, 300 B and 300 C.
- Outer gasket layer 340 is configured to nest in annular pocket 21 of shell 16 along outer circumferential surfaces 352 has inner circumferential surfaces 342 configured to engage either inner gasket layer 330 , as shown in FIG. 26 , or outer surface 122 of pipe 119 when inner gasket layer 330 is removed, as shown in FIG. 28 .
- Inner gasket layer 330 may be torn or detached from outer gasket layer 340 at separation areas 301 A, 301 B and 301 C by pulling inner gasket layer 330 inwardly in a radial direction and then away from outer gasket layer 340 with a separation force greater than the tear strength of separation areas 301 A, 301 B and 301 C. Accordingly, inner gasket layer 330 may be readily removed from outer gasket layer 340 in a manner such that protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C plug cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C in inner circumferential surface 342 and such that inner circumferential surface 342 will form a continuous seal about pipe 119 .
- Inner gasket layer 330 may thereby be selectively disengaged from outer gasket layer 340 and removed from coupling assembly 115 to modify an effective range of pipe outer diameters that may be sealed by and accommodated within coupling assembly 115 .
- removable inner gasket layer 330 enables modification of an effective diameter of coupling assembly 115 .
- retaining protrusions may be used and the spacing of such retaining elements about axis x-x may be varied.
- Other mechanical connections or retaining configurations may be used to retain protrusions 361 A, 361 B and 361 C in cavities 362 A, 362 B and 362 C.
- the protrusions are provided on the outer circumferential surface of inner gasket 330 and corresponding cavities are provided on the inner circumferential surface of outer gasket 340
- the cavities may be formed in the outer circumferential surface of inner gasket 330 and corresponding protrusions may be formed on the inner circumferential surface of outer gasket 340 .
- FIGS. 30-36 show alternative end gasket embodiment 425 .
- end gasket 425 comprises two nested gasket split-ring layers 430 and 440 , with inner gasket layer 430 having three circumferentially spaced radially extending protrusions 461 A, 461 B and 461 C interfacing with correspondingly circumferentially spaced radially inwardly extending cavities 462 A, 462 B and 462 C in outer gasket layer 440 .
- outer split ring gasket 440 is a specially-configured ring-shaped solid penannular member elongated along axis x-x having outer circumferential surface 441 and inner circumferential surface 442 .
- Inner cylindrical surface 442 of outer gasket 440 includes first annular channel 457 A and second annular channel 457 B extending inwardly from inner circumferential surface 442 of outer gasket 430 .
- inner split ring gasket 430 is a specially-configured ring-shaped solid penannular member elongated along axis x-x having outer circumferential surface 431 and inner circumferential surface 432 .
- Outer cylindrical surface 431 of inner gasket 430 includes first spline 439 A and second spline 439 B extending outwardly from outer circumferential surface 431 of inner gasket 430 .
- Splines 439 A and 439 B of inner gasket 430 are orientated in a plane substantially perpendicular to axis x-x and mate with channels 457 A and 457 B of outer gasket 440 , respectively.
- Split-ring end gasket 425 is formed of a resilient material and is cut radially so as to be penannular and not form a full ring.
- radial break or gap 426 is provided through each layer 430 and 440 at a circumferential location.
- each layer 430 and 440 has radial split 426 A and 426 B, respectively, through the entire gasket cross-section when nested.
- the edges of gap 426 may thereby be manually separated or pulled apart from each other to form a more open C-shaped member. This gap is increased such that it is greater than outer diameter 20 of pipe 19 so that end gasket 425 can be installed on or fit around outer diameter 20 of pipe 19 .
- radial split 426 is defined between radially extending side wall 433 of inner gasket layer 430 on one side and radially extending sidewalls 434 and 444 of inner gasket layers 430 and 440 , respectively, on the other side.
- outer gasket layer 440 has a radial split or gap 427 between radial sidewall 443 on one side and radial sidewall 444 on the other side of outer gasket layer 440 .
- gap 427 is an annulus sector defined by central angle 427 A about center axis x-x.
- gasket layer 430 has a radial split or gap 428 between radial sidewall 433 on one side and radial sidewall 434 on the other side of inner gasket layer 430 .
- gap 428 is an annulus sector defined by central angle 428 A about center axis x-x. Central angle 428 A of gap 428 of inner gasket layer 430 is significantly less than central angle 427 A of gap 427 of outer gasket layer 440 .
- Inner gasket layer 430 includes a specially formed radial flange extension 437 having radial sidewall 435 , radial sidewall 433 and outer arc surface 436 .
- extension 437 generally forms an annulus sector defined by central angle 437 A.
- Central angle 437 A of radial flange extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 is substantially the same as central angle 427 A of gap 427 of outer gasket layer 440 .
- Inner split-ring 430 and outer split-ring 440 are also loosely connected to each other via extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 being nested in gap 427 of outer gasket layer 440 such that extension 437 of inner split-ring 430 is annularly wedged between sidewalls 443 and 444 of outer gasket layer 440 .
- sidewall 435 of radial extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 includes stepped protrusion 465 interfacing with correspondingly radially spaced and stepped inwardly-extending cavity 466 in sidewall 443 of outer gasket layer 440 .
- Protrusion 465 of extension 437 of gasket layer 430 mates with cavity 466 in outer gasket layer 440 to retain gasket layers 430 and 440 in radial alignment from longitudinal axis x-x.
- Additional radial retaining protrusions and cavities may be used and the spacing of such retaining elements from axis x-x may be varied.
- the profile of such protrusions and cavities may also be varied.
- protrusion 465 is provided on the sidewall surface 435 of extension 437 of inner gasket 430 and corresponding cavity 466 is provided on the sidewall surface 443 of outer gasket 440
- the cavity or cavities may be formed in the sidewall surface 435 of extension 437 of inner gasket 430 and the corresponding protrusion or protrusions may be formed on the sidewall 443 of outer gasket layer 440 .
- Extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 is configured to nest in gap 427 , with two-step protrusion 465 received in corresponding cavity 466 of outer gasket 440 . Accordingly, inner gasket layer 430 may be readily removed from and reinserted into outer gasket layer 440 .
- outer and inner gasket layers 430 and 440 are both held together by their own resiliency, although gasket layers 430 and 440 may be separated by pulling inner gasket layer 430 away from outer gasket layer 440 annularly and then inwardly in a radial direction from outer gasket layer 440 .
- gasket layers 430 and 440 may be further attached to each other via adhesive layer 400 between protrusion 465 of inner gasket layer 430 and cavity 466 of outer gasket 440 .
- Extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 includes separation area 410 .
- Adhesive layer 400 bonds the end surface of protrusion 465 of inner gasket layer 430 to the inner surface of cavity 466 in outer gasket layer 440 .
- the material strength of separation area 410 of inner gasket layer 430 relative to the bonding strength of adhesive layer 400 is such that protrusion 465 will separate from extension 437 of inner gasket layer 430 at separation area 400 under an applied separation force between inner gasket layer 430 and outer gasket layer 440 prior to protrusion 465 separating from outer gasket layer 440 at bonded connection 400 .
- Inner gasket layer 430 may be torn or detached from outer gasket layer 440 at its separation areas by pulling inner gasket layer 430 away from outer gasket layer 440 with a separation force greater than the tear strength of the separation areas, including separation area 410 . Accordingly, inner gasket layer 430 may be readily removed from outer gasket layer 440 in a manner such that protrusion 465 plugs cavity 466 .
- Inner gasket layer 430 may thereby be selectively disengaged from outer gasket layer 440 and removed from coupling assembly 115 to modify an effective range of pipe outer diameters that may be sealed by and accommodated within coupling assembly 115 .
- removable inner gasket layer 430 enables modification of an effective diameter of coupling assembly 115 .
- gasket 425 includes penannular outer gasket layer 440 and separate penannular inner gasket layer 430 that is insertable into and removable from outer gasket layer 440 .
- Gasket 425 defines a gasket opening orientated about longitudinal axis x-x. Alternatively, a mechanical connection or other retaining configurations may be used to retain protrusion 465 in cavity 466 .
- outer gasket layer 440 includes pressure assist annular groove 456 to aid in sealing to pipe 19 or 119 under compressive pressure.
- extension 470 of inner gasket layer 430 includes annular groove 470 corresponding in radius and axial depth to annular groove 456 in outer gasket layer 440 .
- groove 470 provides volumetric space for gasket 440 to move into as sleeve 16 is tightened to pipe 19 and gasket 425 is radially compressed between shell 16 and pipe 19 , facilitating an improved seal.
