Be it known that l, LOUIS L. JosErH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of y Illinois, have invented a new and 'useful Improvement in Knives, of which the following is a specilication.v

My invention relates more particularly to improvement in the means for fastening in place against the sides of the knife the or.

namental handle-sections thereof, as, for eX- ample, those made'in part of celluloid; my object being to provide novel and simple means for this purpose which will enable the knife to be manufactured `at relatively low cost and present the desired neat appearance, eliminating the exposure to view of rivets, or the like, on the outside of the handle-sections of the knife.4

Referring to the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a face View of a folding pocket-knife constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. lin the knife illustrated the side-plates thereof are represented at 8, two of these plates being provided with blades 9 and 10 and the usual spring-bar 11 interposed therebetween, these parts being connected together by rivets 1Z,`13 and 14, the rivets 12 and 13 passing through the ends of the plates Sand the` blades 9 and 10 and pivotally connecting the blades with the sideplates, and the rivet 14 passing through these plates intermediate their ends and through thespring-bar 11, the ends of the latter being free to be sprung and coperating with the blades as is usual in knives of this general type.

The handle-sections of the knife are represented at 15, these sections in the construction illustrated having their exposed surfaces covered with sheet cellliloid, or any other suitable flexible material, represented at 16, though the handle-sections may be otherwise formed as desired. In the case of the structure shown, the .handle-sections 15 are formed of .plates 17 having rearwardly extending continuous flanges 18 along their marginal edges, with the sheets of Celluloid 16 extending over the outer sides of the sections 15 vand turned rearwardly over the flanges 18 and crimped into the position.

The plates 17 are provided on their inner surfaces with lugs 19 preferably formed by partially slitting the metal of the plates 17y the plates 8 to clench them together, as represented in Fig. 7, it beingpreferred that the central sections of the plates 8, containing the slots 20, be slightly outwardly olfset as represented at 21, whereby the deiiected ends ofthe lugs 20 shall lie in the ref cesses thus formed and within the planes of the main portions of the inner sides of the plates 8 and thus not in any way obstruct lthe blades.

It will be noted from the foregoing that .no rivets or other fastening means are eX- posed on the outer surfaces of the handlesections, andA thus the appearance of the knife is not detracted from by this cause. Furthermore, the parts of the knife may be quickly assembled and the completed knife is very strong, and danger of the handleysections separating from the body of the knife is reduced to the minimum.

While 1' have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What lf claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isv 1. In a knife, the combination of a pair of plates secured together in spaced relation 4with a blade therebetween' and conl taining openings, handle-sections on said plates, and integral projections on said handle-sections extending through the openings in said plates and interlocking with the latter against the inner sides thereof.

2.In a knife, the combination of a pair of plates secured together in spaced relation with a blade therebetweenand containing openings, with the inner sides of said platesrecessed at said openings, handlesections on said plates, and projections on said handle-sections extending through the openings in said plates and interlocking with the latter againstl the inner sides thereof.

3. In a knife, the combination of a pair of plates secured together in spaced relation with a blade therebetween, said plates being recessed by having their central portions outwardly offset and containing openings in said portions, handle-sections on said plates, and'projections on said handle-sections eX- tending through the openings in said plates and interlocking with the latter against the inner sides thereof.

In a knife, the combination of a pair of plates, means securing said plates together in spaced relation with a blade therebetween, plates iatwise opposing said pair'of plates, means securing said last-named plates to said pair of plates, and a covering for each of said last-named plates secured between adjacent plates.

In a knife, the combination of a pair of plates, rivets, or the like, securing said plates together in spaced relation with a blade therebetween, said plates having their central portions outwardly offset and containing openings in said offset portions, handle-sections fitting against said plates and provided with -lugs struck from said sections and extending through the openings in said plates with their inner ends bent i into overlapping engagement with the inner faces of said plates, and a covering extending over said handle-sections and crimped in about the outer edges thereof.
