Be it known that l, SAMUEL J. Lnvx, a
citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Johnstown, C ambria county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Sleigh-Runners for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereo My invention relates to wheeled vehicles and it has special reference to baby carriages, go-carts, and the like.

Another object is to provide an attachment of the aforesaid character that shall be adapted to be set in either of two predetermined positions to perform the respective functions of a sleigh-runner and a mud guard. dti'll another object is to provide an attachment that shall permit. a limited rota tive adjustment of the body of the vehicle relative to the plane of the runner, whereby it is particularly adapted for use on twowheeled vehicles.
@ther objects and advantages of my invention will be set forth hereinafter and in order that my invention may be thoroughly understood, T will describe my invention in the following specification and then point I out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is 'a side elevation of a go-cart equipped with till the attachment of my invention. A detailed perspective of the attachment with someaof its parts separated, is shown on a larr scale in Fi 2. Fig. 3 is a side elevatien showing t e same attachment applied to afour-wheeled vehicle. Fig. ft is a viewcorresponding to Fig. 1 of a fourwheelled' vehicle equipped with a modified form-ct runner attachment which also embodies my invention. A perspective of this form of attachment is shown on a larger scale in Fig. 5. Fig.6 is a front view of a wheel and a portion of its axle, with the attachment of Figs. 4 and 5 shown in section.

With special reference to Figs. 1 and 2,
represents the body of a two-wheel gohas a semi-cylindrical outer surface 18 from which extends a pin 19. A brace 20 having a cylindrically curved section 21 in which is a slot 22 and an overturned end 23, is adapted to fit over the block 15. Another brace 25 has a cylindrically curved section 26, which is adapted to cooperate with the block 'ltl and an overturned end 27 corresponding to the end 23 of the brace 20. The curved sections of the braces are adapted to surround the blocks and holdthem in position on the axle 11 as shown in Fig. 1, the braces being secured together by bolts 28. The section 26 of the brace 25 has a slot 29 corresponding to the slot 22, the pins 19 of the blocks being arranged to extend through the respective slots and to hold the blocks in position. The straight portion of each of the braces 20 and 25 is made in two sections which are adjustably connected together in any suitable manner. From the foregoing, the application of the device to a vehicle such" as that shown in Fig. 1, will be readily understood. Attention is directed to the fact that the runner is adjustable not only to the size of the vehicle wheel but its position may also be changed according-as it is desired to operate the vehicle on runners or on wheels without removing the runnerv attachment. The.
runner is made relatively broad and flat in order that it may constitute amudguard when in its elevated position, and when the vehicle is being'operated on wheels. It is shown in this position in broken lines in.

One of the advantages of a two-wheel vehicle arises from the fact that the. body and frame may be swung about the center of the axle as a pivot. This advantage is main tained by the use of the sleigh-runner attachment of my invention since the slots 22.

Referring to Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the modification here shown is similar to that of the previous figures except that it is particularly adapted for use on four-wheel vehicles where no tilting of the body about either. axle center is required. hicle axles and each of them is adjustable as to its length. The runner members 56 and 57 are preferably provided with clips 58 and 59 to engage the respective vehicle wheels. Each of these clips is arranged to swing on a pivot 60 and'is held -eitherin an active position or flat against the runner by a springfil. It may. therefore be swung out of the way whentherunner is used as a mud guard. A further description ofthis modification 1s unnecessary because other parts correspond to the structure already described. Attention is particularly directedto the-fact that the adjustments permitted in the length of the members 50 and 55 and in the runners are such as to enable the attachment to be setfor vehicles of quite widely varying wheel bases and the other adjustments which have already been discussed in connection with the re'vious figures, enable. the device to be set i701 a vehicle having wheels of different sizes. In this modification, as in the previous arrangement, the runner may be adjusted to a position above the wheels to constitute a mud guard. Thus it is evident that the attachment when once applied may be .not only left in position indefinitely but is always of service in one capacity or the other. Furthermore, it
enables the vehicle to be quickly converted tov a sleigh or vice versa with small efiort My structure is an improved article of manufacture which may be produced in large quantities at a relatively small expense, and is arranged to avoid the necessity for carrying more than one size for vehicles of any one class.
While I have shown my runner attachment in connection with a baby carriage or go-cart, it is not limited in this regard and of course may be utilized in connection with vehicles of every description.
What I claim is: Y

An attachment for wheeled vehicles comprising "a segmental clamping block having a substantially cylindrical. outer surface and adapted to be mounted on a wheel axle adjacent to a wheel, braces having cooperating curved portions rotatively mounted on the block and extending longitudinally of the vehicle in opposite directions beyond the wheel rim, lateral bars secured to the respective ends of the braces, and a sleigh runner pivotally connected to the lateral bars in the plane of the wheel and adapted to be swung under the wheel or above it to consti tute either asleigh-runner or a mud guard. 2.
