TECTUR.
TALESJLWB.
Spectncation of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. limita.
Application filed March 25, 1914. Serial No. 827,120.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, YoUm M. MARKS, United States Army, a citizen of the United States, at present residing at Fort Logan, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and llmproved Cap-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has reference more particularly to the type of cap used in the United States Anny, the crown of which, when the cap is worn, touches the head of the wearer, resulting in a soiled spot on the cap.
rllhe invention provides a protector having an elective attaching means for the convenient and secure application of the protector to the crown of the cap, at the inside. The form and character of the protector provide for holding a removable card or identification tag between the protector and the crown ot the cap. The arrangement is such that the card or tag will be covered by the transparent material of the protector and be visible therethrough; and furthermore, the disposition of the attaching devices is such that said devices, when the protector is applied and the card in position, will act as guards at opposite sides of the card and prevent displacement of the card.
rlhe invention will be particularly explained in the specific description follow- D3--3 Fig. 4; and Fig. 4 is a face view ot the protector applied.
My improved protector is illustrated as applied to the crown a of a cap A of known form. The body of the protector consists of a disk 10, of transparent sheet material such as celluloid, mica, or the like. Adjacent to one end portion of the disk two spaced attaching pins 11 are secured, there being a third attaching pin 12 secured to the disk adjacent to the opposite end from the pins 11 and in staggered relation thereto. The several attaching pins project from the inner tace of the disk l0, and are bent laterally so as to overlie the inner tace. The terminal ends of the pins are disposed outwardly in the direction ot' the edge of the disk and are disposed in a direction toward the inner surface of the disk.
At opposite sides intervening the end. portions to which the respective attaching pins are secured, the disk 10 has' its edge portions return-bent, as at 13, to overlie the inner surface of the disk, so that the said inturned end portions are disposed at the same side of the disk as the attaching pins. rllhe inturned portions constitute holding means for an identification card or tag B, and it will be seen that when the said card is in position, and the attachment is secured by means of the pins 11 and 12 to the crown of the cap, the said pins will be disposed at opposite sides of the card or tag, and will therefor constitute retainers to limit the sidewise movement of the card, and thus prevent its displacement.
The form and arrangement of the attaching pins and the flexibility of the disk make it possible to first attach the pins 11, say, at one end of the disk, to the crown of the cap, and then permit the opposite pin to be engaged with the material of the crown in the manner, for instance, as illustrated in Fig. 3. When in position the protector, it will be obvious, will ed'ectually prevent the soiling of the crown of the' cap by contact with the hair of the wearer, and will also all'ord a protector for the identification card or tag.
lt will be observed that the pins terminate within the edge of the protector and are therefore covered and cannot come into contact with the hand of the wearer when the hand is placed within the cap.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim as new, and desire to secure by lietters Patent:
1. A protector for an article'of head wear, the same being formed of transparent flexible sheet material having secured at the inner side thereof adjacent to one end portion separate attaching pins, and a third attaching pin at the said inner side adjacent to an opposite end portion and in staggered relation to the pair ot pins, saidpins being bent to overlie the surface of the material and having the free ends deflected outwardly and in a direction toward said surface, the
too
pins terminating within the edge of the material, opposite side edge portions of the protector being return-bent to overlie the inner surface, forming holding-portions at the inner side of the protector adapted to receive a'card, said pins forming barriers at each side of the card-holding portion to retain a card against displacement.
2. A protector for an article of head wear formed of transparent sheet material carrying attaching means secured thereto and carried thereby at the inner side thereof adapted to be engaged with the crown of said article, opposite edge portions of the disk being return-bent at the inner side of the said disk to constitute portions to retain a card or tag.
