Speccation of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 28, 1904. Serial No. 226,388.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS OsBoRNE HOLLAND, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Card Cases and Trays, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide a case for individual packs of playing cards which shall also constitute a tray adapted for holding the hands of cards in duplicate whist.
In a case-tray characterized by my invention the following salient and novel points are presented; first, an improved duplicate whist tray is combined with or embodied in a playing card case of ordinary size, and may accompany each individual pack of pl aying cards; second, the minimum of both bulk and weight is attained for duplicate whist sets of any preferred number of packs, thus providing duplicate whist sets comparatively easy to carry, or to pack as a travelers companion, or to handle in play at a table; third, the duplicate hands of cards are securely reserved in the order of play with the least physical eXtertion and without risk of injury to the cards from fastening or other ill adapted holding device; fourth, the combination of a playing card case and of an improved duplicate whist tray is accomplished at a relatively fractional cost.
Generally stated, the invention resides in a playing card case adapted, by means of duplicate hand frame formations in one portion of the case, and corresponding staybeds in the opposite portion, to separately and relatively receive and hold endwise or sidewise the four hands of cards in duplicate whist.
instead of incorporating the duplicate hand frame formations in the case-proper, the invention may be carried into effect by means of a separately constructed tray-frame providing the said duplicate hand frame formation and adapted to operate in conjunction vvith the two halves of the case proper.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated a form of embodiment of my invention, together with modiiications, it being understood that other forms of embodiment of the invention may be employed without departing from the spirit of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top portion of my casetray. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body of the case-tray, partly broken away to show the projection, in the bottom, which forms the stay-bed for the card hands. Fig. f3 1s a c ross section showing a hand of cards 1n position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a modification, the parts being separated. Fig. 5 is a cross section showing the modified case-tray in use for duplicate whist hands. Fig. 6 is a cross section of my case tray showing a pack of cards incase'd. Fig. 7 is a view of the case closed, containing a pack of cards, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 8 shows a modified form with the top removed, in which a rectangular, telescopic playing card case is provided with extended sections at the sides and ends adapted to receive the hands of cards. Fig. 9 shows the same in cross section. Fig. 10 shows a modified form in whichv the cards are arranged transversely, with the top removed. l. Fg. ll shows plan view of the cover for the form shown by Fig. l0. Fig. l2 shows a longitudinal crosswsection through the assembled case of the modification shown in Figs. 10 and 1l. Fig. 13, is a plan view of a modification in which the hands of cards are arranged longitudinally.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the outer section of a telescopic game-card case, which may be constructed of card board, sheet metal, or any such suitable material.
A2 designates the lower or inner section.
In the top portion of A are four duplicate whist hand frames, a9, adapted in size to receive, on their ends, the several hands of cards in duplicate whist. Sufiicient margin of cover is left between the edge of the outer section A the frame formation a, to cover the edge al@ of the inner section A2, when the two sections are telescoped.
When the case-tray is constructed of card board or like soft fibrous material, the edges of the frame formation a9 are reinforced to render them serviceable. hen the construction is of sheet metal the edges are turned or wired to prevent scufling of the cards. The hands of cards are retained ereetly as shown in Fig. 3 and without danger of the cards sliding out in handling, in the frame formations a with the aid of 6. A telescopic playing card case, com- In testimony whereof I aX my signaprsing two rectangular boX members, one of ture, in presence of two subscribing witl0 which having frames at the edge of its end nesses.
and side walls as herein described adapted to engage and 7retain the four handsl of cards THOMAS OSBORNE HOLLAND' in duplicate whist, one of the said boX mem- Witnesses: g w bers being indexed to designate the relative JAMES F. MARKEY, order of the said hands of cards as played. FLORA RAYMOND.
