- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SoHEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to presses such as hay presses, and more specifically to the means for operating or actuating the plunger of such a press.
One object of my invention is to provlde improved means employing essentially a rack and pinion for effecting the operation of the plunger.
Another object of the invention is to generally improve the operating mechanism for the plunger of a press.
Other and more specific objects accom- 26 plished through the provision of the rack and pinion, will appear hereinafter from the description followingtaken in connection with the accompanying drawlngs, wherein :Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of the driving mechanism, the clutch means being shown disengaged; Fig. 3 is a view at right angles to Fig. 2 showing the clutch means 1n engagement; Fig. 4 is a detail view showmg the main shaft in section, and the loose engagement of the driving pinion therewith, said pinion being shown fragmentarily; Flg. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is atransverse sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the clutch operating lever, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the catch device for engaging and maintaining the lever mentioned, in shifted position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates parallel track rails shown as I beams,
whereby a base flange 2 is provided. A suitable carriage designated 3, is also provided and adapted to slide or travel intermediate the rails and be supported thereon in a suitable manner, as through the engagement of arms 4; on said carriage with the base flange 2.
To the slidable carriage is suitably fastened a toothed rack or track 5, with the teeth of which mesh the teeth of a pinion or cog wheel 6. To the cog wheel 6 is loosely Specification of Letters Patent.

mounted, as best shown in Fig. 4, a main driving shaft designated 7. Said driving shaft 7 may be driven in any suitable manner, as is obvious, and for example, through the engagement of a driven sprocket chain with a sprocket wheel such as 8, which is shown in Fig. 2. As shown in the drawings, shaft 7 extends transversely of the rails 1, and is supported or journaled thereon by means of suitable bearings 9. An abutment 10 is fastened to shaft 7 to be engaged by the pinion 6, and to limit its movement in one direction.
On the shaft 7 is mounted a clutch member generally designated 11, which is slidable along said shaft and rotatable with said shaft through its connection with the shaft by means of a key 12. The pinion 6 has pro vided on one side face thereof, one or more clutch lugs 13, and clutch member 11 is provided with a head 14 having lugs 15 thereon similar to and adapted to engage the lugs 13. Both sets of lugs 13 and 15, are provided with a beveled or inclined face 16 which effects rotation of the pinion 6 when the clutch rotates in one direction, and which permits the clutch to disengage and accordingly not drive the pinion when rotating in the opposite direction. Said clutch member has an extension 17 thereon, at its free end beveled or tapered as shown at 18. This extension 17 is adapted to be projected under a clutch arm 19. Said clutch arm 19 is pivoted at 20 in suitable brackets 21, fastened to a cross bar 22 in turn fastened to the rails 1. At the free end, said clutch arm 19 is connected to-a spring 23, which in turn is fastened preferably to the adjacent side rail 1. IVhen the teeth 13 and 15 are in engagement, the clutch arm 19 is disengaged by the extension 17 as the same moves from under it. Spring 23 then exerts a downward pull upon arm 19 and holds the same in such position that the free end of extension 17 bears against the same and is positively prohibited from sliding to such an extent as to effect disengagement of lugs 13 and 15.
To the rails 1 is suitably fastened a transverse bar or bridge member 24. To the bar 241 is pivoted at 25 a clutch shifting lever having angle arms 26 and 27. Arm 26 is forked, as best shown in Fig. 7 so that the same can loosely engage in a groove 28 of the clutch member 11. A spring 29 is suitably fastened to the arm 27 and to one of the rails 1. This spring eXerts pressure to move the clutch member toward the pinion. To the lever is suitably fastened a spring arm or finger 30 which has a portion 31 distanced from the arm through the provision of an inclined part 32.
i In connection with the portion 31, a suitable catch device is provided onthe adjacent rail 1 which is engaged by said portion when the same moves past it during the operation of the machine. This catch device as shown, comprises a plurality of v leaves 33 which are attached to one of the rails, and through which extends an adjusting screw 34: provided with an eye in which fastened an actuating cord 35. One of the leaves 33 is provided with a block 36 which provides a notch or shoulder as at 37 to be engaged by finger 30, and more specifically theporti'on 31 thereof.
The carriage 3 has fastened thereon a bracket 38, in which is j ournaled a shaft 39 carrying. a roller. or wheel e0. This roller etll'is fastened in operative relation to clutch arm 19 so as to raise said arm by engagemerit with the same on its under surface. To the carriage 3 is also suitably fastened a bracket 4.1 having an angle lug d2 thereon, provided with a screw threaded opening to adjustably receive a screw -13 providing a projection adapted to engage the finger 30 during movement of the carriage.
' To the carriage is pivotally connected a plunger operating rdd'dl, as by means of a transverse rod 4-5 passing through the same and supported by brackets e6 on the carriage. The plunger proper is shown but fragmentarily and designated 47. In connection with the plunger, suitable means is provided to enable the actuating rod to advance a certain distance before actuating the plunger. This means consists of a rod {L3 which extends through and works in an elongated opening or slot t9 in the plunger rod, and which maybe carried by bars 50 connected in any way to the plunger.
The carri ge and connected parts, prearatory to advancing and actuating the plunger to compress hay or other material, arein the position shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the clutch teeth 13 and 15 are in engagement in said figure. Upon the driving of shaft 7 in the proper direction, the loose pinion 6 will be rotated, and by the engagement of its teeth with those of rack 5,'will move the carriage 3 forward and thereby actuate the plunger 47; the plunger. not being actuated until the carriage has advanced a certain distance, due to thefconnection of the plunger with rod 4% by means of rod 48, and slot d9. lVhen the plunger-has been advanced or actuated to theproper extent, the carriage has moved to such position that roller-l rides under and against the clutch arm 19, thereby raising the same, and the projection 43 contacts with finger 30 which tilts the clutch actuating lever and causes the clutch member to slide to such position that projection 17 is beneath the arm 19, and the lugs 13 and are disengaged, whereby pinion 6 is freely rotatable in either direction independently of shaft 7. By further forward movement the finger moves past the block 36 of leaf 33 and snaps into the notch 37 thereof, thereby effectively and positively maintaining the clutch teeth 13 and 15 disengaged. Thereupon rebound of the hay occurs, which restores or slides the carriage and attached parts to normal position preparatory to another operation. After the return or rebound of the carriage, and preparatory to another operation, it is necessary to adjust the cord so as to actuate leaves 33 to release the finger 30. Thereupon the spring 29 actuates the lever so as to move the clutch member to such position that teeth 13 and 15 positively engage, and the pinion 6 is coupled so. as to rotate with shaft 7. Dur ing the latter sliding movement of the clutch member, the same moves from under the clutch arm 19. Then spring 29 draws such clutch arm downwardly beyond the free end of projection 17, and effectively preventing outward movement thereof until again raised through the engagement of roller 40 therewith.
Various changes in the details of construction may be made within the spirit and scope of the appended claims, as is obvious, and such changes accordingly are reserved.
Having thus described my said invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hay press, including in combination with a plunger, a slidably mounted carriage in connection with the plunger to operate the latter, means for slidably and permanently associating the plunger with the carriage, whereby motion is imparted to the plunger subsequent to an appreciable ad- Vance of the carriage to increase the impact of the plunger.
2. A hay press including, in combination with a plunger, a movable carriage remote from said plunger, means interposed between the carriage and plunger to impart movement to the latter when the carriage is operated, said means being operable at an appreciable distance prior to imparting movement to said plunger, whereby a sudden impact is created for facilitating compression of the hay.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination with plunger means, a carriage to which said means is attached, a rack on said carriage, a driven shaft, a pinion loosely mounted on said shaft in engagement with said rack, clutch means for said pinion, a
shifting lever for said clutch means, means to shift said lever, and catch means to engage and maintain said lever in shifted position.

In a device of the class described, in combination with plunger means, a carriage to which said means is attached, guide means for said carriage, a rack on said carriage, a driving shaft, a loosely mounted pinion on said shaft, a slidable clutch member for said pinion on said shaft, a pivot clutch arm engaging said clutch member, means on said carriage to engage and shift said arm, a lever engaging said clutch member, means on said carriage to engage and shift said lever, spring catch means to engage and maintain said lever in shifted position, means to actuate said catch means to release said lever, and spring means to actuate said Copies lever to restore said clutch member into clutched relation with said pinion.
5. A device of the character described in combination with a plunger and a track, a carriage mounted for movement on said track for actuating said plunger, an operating means engaged with said carriage for actuating the same on said track, a clutch connecting said operating means with a source of power, a clutch arm for retaining said clutch in engagement with said operating means, and revoluble means carried by said carriage and having engagement with said track for disengaging said arm at a predetermined time from the said clutch.
