To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOEL WEIGEL, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Hinges and Ladders for Silos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the mountings for doors of silos and other structures.
The object of the present invention is to provide a substantial, comparatively inexpensive, durable and easily operated mounting, or mountings, for doors of silos and the like when it is desired to have an inwardly closed door or a series of doors operable from the outside.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a mounting for doors of silos, which will maintain the doors firmly in closed position, which will permit the doors, or a door, to be opened by slight inward and subsequent edgewise movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door structure and mounting means especially adaptable for silos and tall structures where there may be several doors one immediately above another, and whereby a ladder structure results, up which access may be had to the higher portions of the silo.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,

In the drawings a portion of a silo wall 2 is shown, this being of substantially cylindrical form, between the j amb or post members 3 of which there is provided a number of vertically superposed doorways 4, the jambs being rabbeted on their inner sides at 5 for the purpose of receiving and stopping a complementary door 6 which is preferablv flat, so that the adjacent top and bottom edges of the sill 4 project slightly beyond the front planes of the doors.
One of the important features of the present invention is to provide a mounting for a door, as 6, whereby the door may be opened with a movement traversing or moving through as small a space as possible, so that the door may be opened readily when but a small amount of the substance of the silo is cleared from behind the door. To accomplish this, I have shown my mounting as comprising a rod 7 bent to form a substantially hook-shaped hinge member and rung; the rod being substantially in the form of an L adapted to be mounted in a horizontal plane and having at one end a hinge pivot 8 for a hinge plate 9, which is secured to the adjacent vertical edge of the door, there being preferably two rods 7 and hinge plates 9 for each door, although this will vary according to the dimensions of the structure to which they are to be applied.
The long straight arm of the rod or rung 7 is slidably mounted in a suitable bearing or hanger plate 10, which is adapted to be securely fastened to the jamb opposite the other, against-which that edge of the door 6 carrying the hinge plate 9 will seat. Preferably the distance of the hinge plate 8 from the shank of the rung 7 is suilicient to overlap'the jamb or post 3 on which the hanger or bearing 3 is secured; this happening when the door is to be opened, which is accomplished by a slight turning movement of the door inwardly about the pivot 8, the movement being just sufficient so that the swinging edge of the door will clear the lefthand j amb in this case, whereupon the door and the mounting rung 7 may be shifted horizontally toward the bearing 3, in which the rung will be guided and supported, thus carrying the door 6 into overlapping position with relation to the inner wall of the silo behind the bearing 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a mounting upon which the door is hingedly turnable, but by providing for lateral movement of the mounting, it is necessary only to swing the door 6 by a few degrees on its pivot 8, whereupon the operator may shift the door and its mounting members 7 toward the left-hand jamb memher, leaving the doorway thus practically entirely open and clear, the whole movement of the door requiring but a very small space by the elimination of any swinging movement of large angle.
When all of the doors are closed, the rungs or hook-shaped members 7 form very substantial footings upon which a person may climb, using the rungs as a ladder to attain a position at any point along the vertical wall of the silo.
Any suitable form of locking device may be utilized for holding the door closed, and in the present case I have shown each door as provided with a spring lever or arm 11, which, when arranged diagonally, will clear 7 the top and bottom sills of the doorway and by slightly turning the lever or spring lock 11 its ends will over-ride the outer curved surfaces of the sills 4 and form an eflicient means for holding the door firmly closed.
Having thusdescribed my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is:
1. The combination with a wall structure having a doorway, of a door inside of the wall closably fitting the doorway, and means supported on the outside of the wall and pivotally connected at its opposite end to the door and shiftable horizontally along the outside of the wall to carry the door bodily laterally away from the opening and in close parallel position to and on the inside of the wall.
2. In combination with a wall having a doorway, a door adapted to fit said doorway, a hinge plate secured to the outer surface of the door transversely the same, and a hook-shaped complementary hinge member or rung joined to the hinge and slidably mountedupon the outer surface of the wall in bearings on one side of the doorway, said door being opened by slight inward swinging movement on the sliding hinge member and subsequently by lateral movement of the door and sliding hinge member. 3.111 combination with a silo having a plurality of vertically superposed doorways with suitable jambs, doors snugly fitting the jambs and opening inwardly and movable horizontally without swinging movement, and hangers for the doors comprising hookshaped members with their longer straight shanks slidably mounted in bearings on the outside wall of the silo adjacent the doorway, the hooked ends of said members having pivotal connections with the doors whereby the latter maybe swung inwardly slightly and the distance between the hinge ends and the shanks of said members be suflicient to overlap the jamb of the door at one side when moved into juxtaposition therewith so that the door may be opened by a lateral sliding movement.
4. In combination with a silo having a plurality of vertically superposed doorways with suitable jambs, doors snugly fitting the jambs and opening inwardly and movable horizontally without swinging movement, and hangers for the doors comprising hook-shaped members with their longer straight shanks slidably mounted in bearings on the outside wall of the silo adjacent the doorway, the hooked ends of said members having pivotal connections with the doors whereby the latter may be swung inwardly slightly and the distance between the hinge ends and the shanks of said members be sufiicient to overlap the jamb of the door at one side when moved into juxtaposition therewith so that the door may be opened by a lateral sliding move.- ment, said hanger memberscombined in superposed relation'to form a ladderway.
5. A door structure comprising jambs of a wall, said door having rabbeted edges to snugly fit the amband closed outwardly there against, a spring bar turnably pivoted on the outer surface of the door and adapted upon the wall structure adjacent the doorway and hook-shaped hinge members horizontally slidable in ,said guideways having pivots at their hook ends connected to the door, said hinge members being adapted to slide on the outside of the wall through said bearings while the inner hook ends upon which the doors are pivoted move into overlapping relation with the jamb of the doorway behind said guides.
7. The combination with a wall structure having an opening, of a door having its edges fitting in corresponding seats in the opening to close the same, a combined ladder rung and carrying means for the door on the side of the wall structure opposite to the side on which the door opens, said last-named means comprising a rod hingedlyconnected at one end to the door, and the other end of the rod slidably mounted on the outside of the wall structure, said rod offset from the door and adapted and arranged to permit an inward movement of an edge of the door away from the rod to clear the wall structure and then for the door to slide sidewisealong the inside of the wall structure.
8. A combined hinge and ladder for silo comprising in combination with the, wall of the silo, a carrier with a shank mounted slidably upon the outside of the wall and having an inwardly directed hook at one end, a door pivotally mounted upon the inner end of the hook for slight swinging inward movement and subsequently movable laterally close to the Wall to uncover a doorway, the shanks of the carriers forming, when the doors are closed, a vertical ladder.
9. The combination of a receptacle having a door opening, of a closure for said opening, said closure arranged on the inside of the receptacle and movable crosswise of the opening to close the latter, and a hinge member consisting of a bent rod connected to the closure and extending through the opening, and a guide on the outside of the receptacle through Which the rod slides in the opening and closing movements of the closure and which guide supports the free end of the rod when the closure is in position to close the opening.
