To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIrroLYr SAURER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Arbon, Switzerland, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Jacquard Mechanism for Embroidery-Machines; and I do hereby declare the follow to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines by which, as is usual, the jacquard card controls not only the movement of the embroidery frame, but also the operation of various special function devices, such as the perforating mechanism, the festoon mecha nism, etc. To accomplish the control of the special function devices the jacquard card is provided with special hole-groups, for which, however, there is but little space available in the card, so that additional holegroups for producing additional special functions or operations, such as the cutting of long holes in the fabric, cannot well be provided. It has been proposed heretofore to provide special clutches in the operating mechanism so that various special functions can be initiated by means of a single holegroup, but this involves complicated construction which is liable to frequent derangement.
The object of this invention is to produce the same desirable result by means of a much simpler construction in which, although two or more special functions may be initiated by a single hole-group, the operation-of all save one is prevented by a locking member which is actuated so as to permit the movement of only one of two or more of the jacquard fingers or latches, the movement of all of which might otherwise be permitted by the jacquard needles.
Obviously the invention is applicable to any of the special operations of a jacquard embroidery machine, but for the purposes of illustration and explanation of the nature of the invention it will be shown and described herein with special reference to an arrangement of the jacquard mechanism in which the operation of festooning and the opera- Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawings in which the invention is illustrated. Figure 1 is a view in front eleration of the jacquard mechanism and part of the embroidery machine connected therewith, those parts which are not necessary for a proper understanding of the invention being omitted. Fig. 2 is a top view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 4.8 are detail views showing the jacquard needles, fingers or latches and locking member in different relations. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the parts to be referred to. Fig. 10 is a view illustrating particularly the devices for actuating the jac quard needles.
In the drawings A designates the jacquard mechanism or so-called automat, which is provided as usual with jacquard needles 1, coeperating fingers or latches 2 pivoted on the vertical reciprocating frame 5 which carries the needles, transmitting levers 4: with pins 3 adapted to be engaged by the fingers or latches 2, gear shifting levers 6 connected suitably to the levers 4:, and gears 7 movable by the levers 6 on the shafts 9 9", 9, 9 etc., on which they are splined, into or out of engagement with the constantly rotating gears 8. The positions of the needles 1 are controlled by the jacquard card in the usual manner and through the described connections a partial rotation, through a small angle, of one or another of the shafts 9 is accomplished. The partial rotation of the shafts 9 controls the various special function devices in substantially a well known manner, but the several connections, so far as they are shown, will be described briefly for the sake of clearness.
The shaft 9 by means of an ordinary worm gear located at 10, drives the shaft 11 which has an arm 12 to which is connected a rod 13. The other end of the rod 13 is connected to an arm 14 on the same shaft with an arm 15. The latter is pivoted to one end of a lever 43 to the middle of which is connected a rod 16, the other end of which is connected to a lever 17 pivoted at 18 and engaging at its other end a pin 19 which is movable longitudinally in a lever arm 20 and has at its end a thin roller 21. By the movement of the lever 17 and the pin 19 the roller 21 may be moved into engagement with either one of two cam grooves 23 24, one behind the other, in a cam disk 22. The front cam groove 23 is provided for the operation of the perforating mechanism and it imparts oscillating movement to the roller 21 and the lever arm 20 only during the period of rest of the embroidery frame, while the cam groove 24 is provided for the operation of the prismatic perforators at the time when the embroidery frame is being moved, for the purpose of making long holes in the fabric. The upper end of the lever 43 is connected by a rod 44 with an arm 45 on a shaft 46 which is driven by an ordinary worm gear, located at 47, from the shaft 9 of the jacquard mechanism or automat. Partial rotation of the shaft 9 causes the roller 21 to be moved into or out of engagement with the cam groove 23, while the partial rotation of the shaft 9, as already described, causes the roller 21 to be moved into or out of engagement with the cam groove 24.
The lever arm 20 is fixed on a shaft 25 whichhas a second lever arm 26. To the lever arm 26 is pivotally connected a slotted lever 27 arranged to swing on a movable fulcrum block 28. The other end of the lever 27 is connected by a rod 29 and a suitable and well known system of rods and levers .to the rails .or bars 30 which carry the perforators. When the roller 21 is in engagement with the cam groove 24 the perforating rails are moved to and fro not only during the period of rest of the embroidery frame but also while the embroidery frame is being moved, so that by the sawing or cutting action of the prismatic perforators long holes are formed in the fabric.
The shaft 9 is operatively connected to an eccentric 31 which, by means of a rod 32 and the usual connections, not necessaryto be shown herein, brings the festoon devices into and out of operation. In the construction shown a single hole-group in the jacquard card (it being understood'that holegroup denotes one or several simultaneously acting holes), provided for producing a special operation, acts in such a manner that the jacquard needles 1 are shifted, for example, so that the notches 33 and the notches 34 of the several needles are brought into line (see Fig. .5). Thereby the correspondingfingers or latches 2 and 2, that is, the latch 2 which causes the roller 21 to be moved out of the cam groove 23 and into the cam groove 24 for effecting the cutting of long holes in the fabric and the latch or finger 2 which brings about the operation of the festoon devices, might both enter the respective lines of notches 33 and 34. In proximity to the fingers or latches there is provided a notched bar 35 which acts as a locking bar.
In Figs... 4-8 the positions of the jacquard needles 1, locking bar 35 and fingers or latches 2 are represented diagrammatically, whereas in reality, as shown in Fig. 1, the locking bar 35 is above the needles 1 and the levers 4 and cooperates with extensions from the latches 2. The bar 35 is provided with notches 36 36, 36 36 and 36 for co5peration with the latches 2 2 2 and 2. It is operatively connected by a slotted bellcrank lever 42 and a rod 41 to the upper arm of a lever 40 which is secured to a shaft 53 and ,is acted upon by a spring 48. This lever is shifted and the locking bar 35 is shifted with it whenever any one of the shafts 9 receives a partial rotation and to an extent or in a direction which varies for each shaft. The shaft 9 for example, moves the lever 40 by means of a crank arm 49 on the shaft 9, a link and a lever 50 which is mounted loosely on'the shaft 9 and has a pin 51 which bears against the inclined edge of the roller arm of the lever 40. The shaft 9 shifts the lever 40 and the bar 35 by means of an eccentric 31 which acts upon a roller 37 on the lower arm 'of the lever 40. The shaft 9 shifts the lever 40 and the bar 35 by means of a lever 51 mounted on the shaft 46 and arranged to bear against the inclined-end of the lever 52 which is fixed on the shaft The shaft 9 shifts the lever 40 and the bar 35 by means of a lever arm 54 which is fixed on the same shaft with the lever arm 14 and co-acts with the roller on the lower member of the lever 40. In describing the operation of the improved construction let it be assumed that the jacquard needles 1, the fingers or latches 2 and the bar 35 are in the positions which they occupy during the operation of embroideri-ng, as shown in Fig. 4. The fingers or latches 2 2 and 2 are then locked by the bar 35 so that they cannot enter the notches of the needles. If there is then presented in the jacquard card a hole-group which is intended to change the movement of the machine, such hole-group first shifts the jacquard needles into such a position that the notches 56 come in line. The finger or latch 2 which is not locked by the bar 35, can now enter the notch 36- of the bar and the notches 56 of the needles and through the operation of the jacquard mechanism the shaft 9 is rotated through a small angle. Thereby not only isthe mechanism which changes the speed of the machine acted upon, but the bar 35 itself is shifted by means of the pin 51, as already described, into the position shown in Fig. 5. If there is now presented in the jacquard card a holegroup which initiates the movement of the festoondevices, the needles 1 are thereby shifted into the position shown in Fig. 5. The notches 33 and the notches 34 of the needles are now in line so that theymight be entered by the latches 2? and 2E. The bar 35, however, locks the latch 2 so that, although the jacquard needles are moved by the same hole-group of the jacquard card into a position in which both latches 2 and 2 might be brought into operative position, only the latch 2 is brought into operative position and action. Through the movement of the latch 12* the forks of the festoon apparatus are brought into their operative position. By this movement the shaft 9 is rotated through a small angle and thereby the eccentric 31 acts upon'the roller 37 and moves the lever 40 to such an extent that the bar 35 is shifted into the position shown in Fig. 6 (the jacquard needles being shown in this figure in their normal position). If, however, in the position of the bar 35 shown in Fig. 5 the jacquard needles 1 are not brought by the card into the position shown in this figure, but by another group which initiates the movement of the perforating mechanism, so that the notches 57 would come into line and the latch 2 opposite the notch 36* would be brought into action, then the shaft 9, being rotated through a small angle, effects movement of the lever 15, the pivot 58 (Fig. 3) being then shifted into the position 58, while the pin 59 acts as a fixed fulcrum. Thereby the pivot 60 is moved into the position 60' and the roller 21 is moved into the cam groove 23. At the same time/the lever 40 is further displaced by the lever arm 54, which is now to the left above the roller 55, so that the lever 4.2 is displaced from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 7. If the jacquard card now presents the hole-group for initiating the operation of festooning, the jacquard needles are shifted into the position shown in Figs. 5 and 7 so that the notches 33 and the notches 34: come in line. This time, how ever, the bar 35 is in such a position that only the latch 2 but not the latch 2 can enter the notches in the needles and he brought into action, as shown in Fig. 7. \Vhen this takes place the shaft 9 is rotated through a small angle and. thereby the lever 4-3 is again oscillated by the shaft 46, the pin 59 being shifted this time to the position marked 59 in Fig. 3, while the pin 58 acts as a fixed point and the pin 60 is shifted from the position 60'. The movement of the shaft a6 displaces at the same time, by means of levers 51 52 and shaft 53, the lever 40, so that the bar 35 is shifted into the position shown in Fig. 8. In this position of the bar 35 (the jacquard needles being shown in their normal position) the latch 2 alone is not locked and may therefore be brought into action, by the same hole-group, for effecting the stopping of the operation of cutting long holes in the fabric. The other single movements, which have been previously started, are then stopped in the reverse order, the hole-group which stops the festooning, also stopping the cutting.
The devices for actuating the jacquard needles 1 do not of themselves embody any novelty and may be constructed and arranged to operate in any usual and well known manner. Suitable means are shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings in which the perforated jacquard card 60, traveling with a step by step movement over the guide roll 61 carried by the frame 62, is reciprocated toward and from the ends of the jacquard needles 1 so as to cooperate therewith in the usual manner. A sliding block 63 which carries the frame 62 is mounted to reciprocate on a pin 6-4. A lever 68, pivoted at 67 and having a roller 66 which engages the groove of a cam 65, isprovided with a slot or loop 69 to engage a pin on the sliding block 63. On the shaft 69 of the cam is mounted a cam or eccentric 70 which, through a rod 71 and bell-crank lever 72, actuates a. pusher 73. By the reciprocation of the jacquard card 60 those of the needles 1 which are in line with unperforated portions of the jacquard card are pushed to the left hand in Fig. 10 while those which are in line with perforations in the card are not disturbed. At the proper time, when the jacquard card retires from the needles, the pusher 73 restores to normal position those of the jacquard needles 1 which have been displaced by the movement of the jacquard card.
I claim as my invention 1. In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, the combination of a series of jacquard needles, devices for actuating the needles, a series of fingers or latches selectively permitted by the needles to have effective action, independent means cooperating with such fingers or latches to prevent or permit effective action thereof, and actuating devices for said independent means other than the devices for actuating the needles.
2. In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, the combination of a series of jacquard needles, devices for actuating the needles, a series of fingers or latches selectively permitted by the needles to have effective action, a shiftable locking bar adapted to cobperate with said fingers or latches to prevent or permit effective action thereof, and means for shifting said effective action thereof, and actuating devices for saidindependent means other than the devices for "actuating the needles.

In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, a series of notched jacquard needles, devices for actuating the needles, a series of fingers or latches selectively permitted by the needles to have effective action, a shiftable notched bar'cooperating with the fingers or latches to prevent or permit effective movement thereof and means for shifting said bar'other than the devices for actuating the'needles;
5. In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, a series of jacquard needles, a series of fingers or latches selectivelypermitted by the needles to have'effective action, a corresponding series of controlling mechanisms the operation of Which is initiated by the fingers or'latches, and independent means actuated by said controlling mechanisms to prevent or permit effective action of the fingers or latches.
6. In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, a series of jacquard needles, a
series of fingers or latches selectively permitted by the needles to have effective action, a corresponding series of controlling mechanisms the operation of which is initiated by'the fingers or latches, and a shiftable locking bar actuated by said controlling mechanisms in different degrees to prevent or permit effective action of the fingers or latches.
7. In a jacquard mechanism for embroidery machines, a series of notched jacquard needles,-a series of fingers or latches selectively permitted by said needles to have effective action, a series of controlling mechanisms the operation of Which is initiated by said fingers or latches, and a shiftable notched bar cooperating With the fingers or latches to prevent 'or permit effective action thereof and shifted in different degrees by the action of the controlling mechanisms.
