POWER-TRANSMITTING DEVICE.
Application filed January 29, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND M. VAN SLYKn, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'hitefish, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Power- Transmitting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in power transmitting devices and has particular application to a device of this class whereby power may be communicated from a prime mover to a driven element and by means of which the speed of the driven element may be varied relatively to the prime mover and the motion of the driven element arrested irrespective of the operation of the prime mover or driver.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a power transmitting device which may be readily interposed between a driver or prime mover and an element, or elements as the case may be, to be driven and by means of which the driven element will be actuated at a reduced speed with respect to the speed of the driver.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the type set forth which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency, du-
rability and strength and wherein the component parts thereof will be so correlated and arranged as to produce a compact power transmitting device which may be readily and quickly installed and operated and maintained at a minimum expense.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a power transmitting device constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough, and Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the side of the device opposite from that shown in Fig. 1, parts being broken away.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a suitable base, while 2, designate standards appropriately fastened to the base adjacent to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915. Serial No. 745,024..
the opposite longitudinal side edges thereof and upstanding therefrom in spaced parallel relation, appropriate bearings 3, 3 being carried by the upper end of the standards. Journaled in the bearings 3, 3 and spanning the space between the standards 2, 2 is a shaft 4 carrying an ecoentrically disposed disk 5. Loosely surrounding the eccentric disk 5 and concentric thereof but eccentric relatively to the axis of the shaft & is a compound or duplex gear 6 composed, in the present instance, of a Web 7 having fixed to one face thereof a gear wheel 8 provided with peripheral teeth 9 and to its opposite face a gear ring 10 formed with internal gear teeth 11. Loosely surrounding the shaft 4 in proximity to the gear wheel 8 is a drum 12 having appropriately connected to one face thereof or formed integral therewith a gear ring 13 surrounding the gear wheel 8 and formed with internal teeth 14: meshing with the teeth 9 of the wheel 8. At the opposite side of the duplex or compound gear 6 is a gear wheel 15 arranged loose upon the shaft 4 and having peripheral teeth meshing with the teeth 11 of the gear ring 10 of the compound gear.
Embracing the periphery of the drum 12 is a friction band or strap 16 composed in the present instance of two sections 17 and 18 each having one end suitably connected with the adjacent end of the other section as by a bolt 19, while the free end of the section 17 is fastened to some appropriate form of adjusting or take-up device 20 composed in the present instance of a metallic strip 21 having the free end thereof clownturned and provided with a threaded aperture alining with a similar aperture in a block 22 to receive the take-up bolt 23, the free end of the other section of the friction band being connected to one end of a lever 24: fulcrumed upon a bolt 25 and terminating in a manipulating handle 26 formed with a dog 27 adapted to engage the teeth 28 of a rack bar 29 suitably fastened to the base 1.
In the embodiment of myinvention selected for illustrative purposes, a cable drum 30 is rigidly secured to the gear wheel 15. It is to be understood, however, that my power transmitting device is not limited in its useful application to a cable or hoist drum, as the same may be effectively employed to facilitate the transmission of power from the prime mover to ashaft or other suitable machinery or apparatusto be driven.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention Will be readily apparent.
Assuming the shaft 4 to be coupled up to an electric motor, gas engine or other appropriate prime mover and the lever 24 at its limit of downward movement to clamp the friction band or strap against the periphery of the brake drum 12, it will be seen that in the rotation of the shaft 4, a direct motion will be imparted to the driven gear 15 through the medium of thegear wheel 8 of the duplex gear and the ring 10 of such gear, the gear ring 13 remaining stationary and enabling the power to be transmitted in this manner, as will be readily apparent. Should it be desired to render the driven element or elements as the case may be stationary while the prime mover is running, the operating lever 24: is moved in an upward direction thereby expanding the friction band and so relieving the brake drum of the influence of such band whereby the compound gear, gear ring 13 and brake drum will rotate as a unit about the gear wheel 15, the latter remaining stationary incident to the load thereon. To vary the speed of the driven element with. respect to the driver, the lever 24 is moved to a position to varyor change the frictional contact between the brake drum and the brake band thereby enabling the power transmitting device to be employed as a variable speed gear apparatus.
In some instances, it may be found desirable to increase the speed of the driven element relatively to that of the driver. When such conditions arise, it is obvious that two or any desired number of power transmitting devices may be coupled up to the shaft 4- so that the desired power may be transmitted. WVhen this is resorted to the eccentric one of the devices is disposed at an angle of 90 in advance of the other thereby insuring a perfect counterbalance. However, other methods of increasing the capacity and'range of a power system in which my device is installed may be resorted to.
While Ihave herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made Within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of-the invention.
I claim:
In combination with transmission gearing comprising a, driving shaft, an eccentric thereon, a pair-ofduplex gears, each duplex gear comprising an outer gear and an inner eccentrically arranged gear, of a brake mechanism comprising a'drum rigidly connected to the outer gear of one of said duplex gears, a base, plates upstanding from said base for supporting the ends of the shaft, a lever having one of its extremities bent back upon itself to provide an arm, the arm and major portion of the lever being positioned on opposite sides of one of said plates, a pin passing through the lever, plates and arm formed on the lever for pivotally connecting the lever to the plates, a friction band for said drum having one extremity connected to the end of the arm formed on the lever and its remaining extremity adjustably connected tosaid base, anda rackbar upstanding from the base cooperating with said lever for varying the friction between the friction band and the drum.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RAYMOND VAN SLYKE.
