' CURTAIN POLE. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21, 1910.
Patented Jan. 19, .1915.
WILLIAM W. SMALLEY, 0F MIDLAND, CALIFORNIA.
CURTAIN-POLE.
treaties.
Application filed February 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM N. SMALLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Kern, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to curtain hangers and has for its object to provide in connec' tion with a longitudinally slotted pole, a cheap, simple and efficient means for engagement with the curtain and adapted for sliding engagement with the slot of a pole.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a curtain pole constructed in accordance with the 111 vention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 1s a side elevation of portions of two of the pole sections with one of the clamp devices in section, Fig. 4: is an enlarged front elevatlon of one of the curtain clamp devices detached, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
The improved device comprises acurtain pole formed in a plurality of sections arranged end to end and detachable coupling devices applied to the confronting ends of the pole sections, each of the pole sections being formed in two parts arranged face to face and provided with longitudinal recesses in their confronting faces near one edge with the material of the sections separated at one side to form an open slot communicating with the recesses of the sections. Each of the sections and each of the coupling devices are constructed precisely alike, and the description of one will suffice for all.
Each of the pole sections comprises two members 1011, the members being provided with longitudinal recesses 1213 in their confronting faces, with the material of the sections spaced apart to form a longitudinal channel or slot 31 communicating with the recesses. The recesses 1213 be ing located at one side of the center provide a greater portion of the body of the sections at the side opposite to the slot, and the confronting faces of these wider portions of the sections are tongued and grooved longitudinally as shown at 14. The sections Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented J an. 12. 1915.
Serial No. 545,121.
10-11 are connected in any suitable manner, but preferably by staples 15 extending through the sections as shown.
The sections 10-1l may be of any desired length, and sufficient number of the sections will be arranged end to end to produce a pole of the required length, and each pair of the sections are united by a divided coupling sleeve 17, each sleeve being divided at one side so that the sleeve does not close the slots 31 of the sections when applied. The section 10 is provided with a laterally extending pin 18 While the section 11 is provided with a similar lateral pin 19, while the sleeves 17 are each provided with bayonet slots 20-21 adapted to engage over the pins and enable the sleeves to be coupled to the pole sections.
Slidably disposed wi thin the recess 12-13 and projecting through the channel which communicates therewith are a plurality of devices whereby the curtain material is suspended, and as these suspending devices are precisely alike the description of one will suffice for all. Any required number of the supporting devices may be employed and located at any required distance apart. Each supporting device comprises a U-shaped wire member represented as a whole at 23 and secured by its terminals in a globular member 24- and with the bight portion of the member 23 enlarged into a circle as shown at 25. The globular member 24: is inserted into the longitudinal guideway formed by the recesses 1213 and the member 23 projecting through the slot between the members 11-12, so that the enlarged portion 25 remains constantly spaced below the roller member.
Slidably disposed upon the body portion of the member 23 is a sleeve 26, and depending from the sleeve at one side is an arm 27, the arm being enlarged laterally as shown at 28, and corresponding substantially to the enlargement 25 and provided with a yieldable covering or plate 29 slightly larger than the interior of the enlargement 25, so that when the sleeve 26 is in its lowest position the arm 2728 and the flexible member 29 will be located opposite the enlargement cient force to maintain it in suspended relations to the pole, and by providinga suiiicient number of the suspending members the curtain may be suspended from the pole at as frequent intervals as required.
When the curtain material is to be connected it is only necessary to force the sleeve 26 with its attached arm 2728 and the grip member 29 upwardly toward the pole, pass a portion of the curtain material. through the enlar 'ement 25, and move the sleeve 26 with its attachments downwardly and cause the gripping member 29 to pass over the curtain material at the side oppo site from the enlargement 25. By this means the curtain material is effectually clamped to the pole and is free to be moved longitudinally thereof within the range of thesuspending members. The curtain material may be detached from the pole at any time by simply moving the sleeves 26 with their attachments upwardly toward the pole, as will be obvious.
It will be noted that the plural arrangement of the member 23 serves to prevent copies of this patent may be obtained for rotl-ation of the member the slot of the po e.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied.
What is claimed is The combination with a hollow curtain pole having a slot in the bottom communicating with the bore, of a clip including a ball in said hollow curtain pole, a U-shaped wire having spaced parallel legs projecting ide by side through said slot and terminally rigidly connected to said ball, the bight of said wire being enlarged to form acircular eye, a sleeve slidably fitted on said legs and holding said'legs againstrelative movement, and a button integral with said sleeve and projecting-snugly into said eye.
In "testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of twowitnesses.
