improved Bedstead-Joint, of which the following is a tall, clear, and exact description.
- This invention relates to metal bedsteads and has to deal more particularly with joints between the side bars or s rin frame and the corner posts of the head and foot pieces oi. the bedstead.
The invention has for its general objects to improve the construction of bedstead joints of the type disclosed in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial Number 82%,117, filed March 12, 1914, the invention residing in certain novel means for detachably connecting the bracket element of the jointto thecorner post of the bedstead.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a durable and, sulistantial box bracket having novel and effective means for i zistening thereto a cross-bar extending from the box bracket at one side of the bedstead to the "acket at the opposite side.
A further object of the invention is the employment of a bracket having a lug or equivalent means extending into a corner post through an opening in the latter, the lug being so designed as to interlock with a wedge or equivalent means whereby the bracket is fastened to the post.
Vith these objects in view, andothers wl'iich will appear as the description proceeds. the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement ot parts which will be set forth with particularitv in the following description and claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawing, A designates a corner post, I? the bracket to which a bed stead side bar or spring frame is adapted to be connected. G a. cross bar extending from the bracket at one side to the bracket 7 at the opposite side, D the connecting element which unites the bracket B with the post A.
The post A is otan ular or any other desired cross-section and is provided with a rectangular opening 1 for receiving the means that secures the bracket l) thereto. The bracket B is of a box type, such as that shown in, theapplication hereinbei'ore referredv to, and consists of two sections 2 and 3 which are formed as shown in Fig. A: with end walls -land 5 respectively which overlap. and these walls have openings 6 and 7 which register with each other and with the opening 1 of the corner post. The section 3 has upper and low. plate portions 8 and 9 which form the ton and bottom respectively of the box bracket, and these plate portions have flanges 8 and 9", respectively, at the ends presented to the corner post, and be tween these flanges the end wall 4: of the sec tion 9 engages. as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The portion 8 has a recess 10 in its side edge to receive an i'ipwardly extending ear 11 on the section 2, and from the inner end of this recess extends an upwardly-cxtcnding ear 12. which cars may be fastened together bv av rivet l3 and constitute a lug, which is adapted to engage in an opening provided in the side bar oi? the bedstead. The section 2 has a laterally extending base flange ll which has an opening 15 to receive a lug on attaching device D is made of sheet metal and comprises a loop which forms a lug 17 and the ends of the loop are provided with cross bars 18 which form the base of the connecting device. The cross bars 18 engage the apertured wall of the box bracket and the wedge E passes through the lug 17 and engages the interior surface of the post, so that the connecting device D causes the box bracket to be clamped firmly and irnmovably against the corner post A.
The section 3 has its side wall provided with an .L-shaped opening 20 through which the end 21 of the cross-bar C enters the box bracket, and the vertical flange 22 of the cross bar C has an aperture 23 to receive a lug 24: on the attaching device D. In as sembling the cross-bar the same is inserted into the bracket slantinglv, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and when fully inserted the cross bar is moved to a position at right-angles to the box bracket, whereupon the lug 24 enters the aperture 23, as shown by full lines. The securing of the cross bar to the bracket is completed by a bolt 25 which passes through apertures 26 and 27 inthe top of the bracket and horizontal flange 28 of the cross bar. In addition to the rivet 13 for holding the sections together. a lug 29 is provided on the bottom 9 of section 3 and enters an opening 30 in the section 2, the end of the lug 29 being hammered down as a rivet.
To increase the rigidity between the bracket and post, a stiffening or strengthening element F. such as is shown in Fig. 8, is employed. This element comprises a plate 31 which is interposed between the post A, and the bracket B, and has lugs 32 at its top and bottom for engaging the corresponding parts of the bracket B, and it also has a lateral flange 33 to form an angle with the plate 31 so as to engage two sides of the corner post, as shown in Fig. 4. By means of these flanges the bracket is held rigidly on the post and anv tendency of the bracket to twist or turn on the lug 17 of the attaching device I) as an axis is prevented. If desired, however, this element F canbe omitted, especially where round corner posts are used, and the end of the bracket B is shaped to conform to the curvature thereof.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood bv those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such'changes may be made when desired as are ithi n the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a bed post having an opening, a bracket having an opening registering with the opening of the post, a connecting element consisting of a loop extending out of the bracket and into the post and provided with cross bars on the ends of the members of the loop disposed within the bracket, and means within the post engaging in the loop for connecting the latter with the post.
2. The combination of a bed post having an opening, a bracket having a wall provided with an opening adapted to register with the opening in the post, a T-shaped connecting element having one member extending through the said openings, and a device engaged with the said member coiiperating with the connecting element for fas tening the post and bracket together.
3. The combination of a bed post having an opening, a chambered bracket having an opening, a T-shaped connecting element dis posed within the bracket and having its cen tral portion extending out of the opening of the bracket and into the post through the opening in the latter, said element consisting of a looped metal piece having integral cross-bars at its ends, and a wedge engaged with the portion of the connecting element within the post for fastening the bracket and post together.
4. The combination of a post having an opening, a box bracket made in sections having overlapping walls provided with openings, a T-shaped connecting element arranged within the box bracket and having an apertured member passing through the openings of the sections of the bracket and into the opening of the post, and a fastening disposed in the post and passing through the said member.
5. In a bedstead, the combination of a corner post, a box bracket made in sections, an
element disposed between the bracket and element and post, and means within the post for engaging the said member.

means for securing the box bracket to the post, a lug on the said means, and a crossbar extending into the bracket through the opening and having an aperture for receiving the said lug.
- 8. The combination of a corner post, a box bracket having an owning n its side, means for securing the box bracket to the post a lug on the said means, a cross-bar extending into the bracket through the opening and having an aperture for receiving the said lug, and a bolt connecting-the cross-bar and bracket togethmin addition to the Siliti lug.
9. The combination of a corner post, a box bracket thereon and having an opening in its side, a cross bar extending into the opening and having an aperture, means Within the box br cket for engaging in the aperture to connect the cross bar to the box bracket, and a fastening forming additional means for securing the cross bar to the bracket.
10. The combination of a corner post, a bracket, and means for engagement With a bedstead side bar, a fastening device extending from the bracket into the post, means in the post for engagement with the fastening device, and a plate disposed between the bracket and post and held in place by a fastening device and having flanges engaging respectively the bracket and post.
