WILLIAM D. FORSYTH, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO RAILW'AY PRODUCTS CORPORATION, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CAR-TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
Application filed December 4, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Fon- SYTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car truck side frames made from rolled, pressed or forged metal shapes.
The object of this invention, among other things, is to provide a light and strong car truck side frame.
My invention consists of an improved car truck side frame wherein the compression and tension members are integral with each other and those parts of the frame are made from rolled, pressed or forged metal in combination with a forged or cast open frame having sides acting as bolster guide bars.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end view of a channel. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1 with dotted lines indicating where flanges are sheared and the top surface of the web of the channel is located. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 2 slitted longitudinally with two longitudinal slits. Fig. 4: is a side view of parts of my improved truck side frame. Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the part shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a side view of my improved truck side frame showing its guide frame. Fig. 7 is a vertical. cross section of Fig. 6 on line A, A.
Like figures of reference refer to like parts throughout.
In the construction which I have shown as embodying my invention the compression and tension members of the side frame are made from a channel 1 having parallel slits 6 in its web 3 which extend longitudinally of said web 3 parallel to the flanges 5 of said channel 1 and which terminate short of the ends of said web 3. The edges of the end portions of the flanges 5 are out off along oblique lines 4 so that said flanges 5 taper at the ends of the channel 1. The middle portion of the web 3 bordered by the slits 6 and located between the ends 7 and 8 of said slits 6 is displaced in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said web 3 to form an opening 9. In each of the end portions of said web 3 are holes 10 adapted to receive Specification of Letters Patent.

the bolts which secure the journal boxes to the side frame. In the opening 9 is fitted an open frame 12 in which there is an opening 15 adapted to receive a bolster. The sides of the open frame 12 act as bolster guide bars and the open frame 12 will be termed a bolster guide frame. The bolster guide frame 12 has at its top two spaced flanges 16 which engage the inside faces of the flanges 5 of the channel 1, and at the top edge of each flange 16 is an auxiliary flange 17 which engages over the top edge of one of said flanges 5. At the bottom of the bolster guide frame 12 are two spaced flanges 18 which engage opposite edges of the middle portion of the web 8. Bolts 13 pass through the holes 11 in a middle portion of the web 3 and hold the lower part of the bolster guide frame in engagement with said middle portion. The flanges 16 of the bolster guide frame 12 are fastened to the flanges 5 by rivets 14:.
Obviously, the particular construction which I have shown and described may be considerably modified without departing from my invention, and I do not wisl1,therefore, to be limited to this exact construction.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A car truck side frame made from a channel whose web has spaced longitudinal slits therein terminating short of its ends, the middle portion of said web between said slits being displaced relatively to the remainder of said channel in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said middle portion to form an opening, a one-piece frame mounted within said opening and having an opening therein adapted to receive a bolster, said frame having spaced flanges engaging said middle portion of said web and the flanges of said channel, and means for fastening said frame to said middle portion of said web and to said flanges of said channel.
2. A car truck side frame made from a channel, whose web has two spaced longitudinal slits therein terminating short of its ends, the middle portion of said web between said slits being displaced from the remainder of said channel in a direction perpendicular to the plane of said middle portion to form an opening, an open frame mounted in said opening and having sides acting as bolster guide bars, said frame having flanges at the bottom straddling said middle portion of said Web and flanges at the top engaging the inside faces and tops of the flanges of said channel, and means for fastening said frame to said middle portion of said Web and said flanges of said channel.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specificationin the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
