ARTHUR L. RUSSELL, OF HYDE'PARK, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY COMPANY, OF PAT'ERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
MEANS FOR BINDING TOES or urrnns IN rlnsrnn POSITION.
PatentedJan. 12, 1915.
Original application filed December 17, 1910, Serial No. 597,851 Divided and this application filed July 26, 1912. Serial No. 711,647.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. RUssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Binding Toes of Uppers in Lasted Position, of which the following description, in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures. I
This invention relates to the manufacture of boots and shoes and particularly to means for temporarily securing the shoe upper 1n lasted position and this application is a division of an application Serial No. 597,851, filed Dec. 17, 1910 for improvements in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
A present general practice is to overwork the upper into lasted position about the toe end of the last by wipers that have acting edges shaped to embrace the toe portion of the shoe and lay the upper over the margin of the innersole. turn shoes are provided with upstanding lips or other formations that present a shoulder against which the upper is lasted. A binder of wire or other continuous material is generally employed to secure the upper in lasted position by anchoring it at one end to a tack and drawing it tightly about the upper around the toe to bind it against the shoulder of the innersole after which it is anchored under tension to another tack.
An object of the present invention is to provide means with which to bind the toe without the use of anchor tacks and a further object is to improve the binding of the upper, which frequently slips to some eX- tent under the binding wire, and a further object is to improve that portion of the lasting which includes the shaping of the upper on the margin of the shoe bottom. I
A very im ortant feature of this invention is found in a self-fastening binder. This is herein embodied in a binder of suitable proportions which is provided with an adhesive that will enable it to stick to the up er. It will be readily understood that The innersoles of welt andthe binder holds the upper over the end of the toe largely by confining it in overwiped position and that for serving this purpose the binder may be caused to adhere at its ends only at the sidesof the toe. Preferably, however, the binder will be made adhesive throughout its length and by sticking to the upper it will prevent the upper from slipping under it (at any point. The adhesive used on the binder may be of any suitable kind although it will advantageously be one of the varieties that are non-sticky while dry and at ordinary temperatures. a
srarns PATENT o nIoE.
In. accordance with a further feature of I the invention the binder is coated with an adhesive that is rendered sticky by heat and the lastingapparatus or other means by the aid of which it is applied may conveniently include means for heating the binder to cause the adhesive to stick to the shoe upper. Figure '1 is a'nerspective view of the binder; Fig. 2 shows the toe portion of a shoe having the upper secured by the binder of this invention.
In'using this binder the toe lasting wipers, not shown, will be used as is customary to work the upper into lasted position and if they are heated they will smoothly iron the upper and heat it to prepare it for the adhesive binder to stick effectively to it. Then the wipers will be partially backed. away from the shoulder 32 of the innersole, or from the upper 34: which they have pressed against the shoulder, and the strip or strand 30 of binding material coated with adhesive on its back will be placed about the toe in the space opened up by backing ofl the wipers. This strip may advantageously be thin fabric or paper rendered stiff by the adhesive and capable of standing on edge with the adhesive against the upstanding again advanced to force the binder into intimate contact with the upstanding upper and toheat and soften the adhesive to make it stick. The binder heating means may re main in contact with the binder for the necessary time to allow the heat to act and then be preferably partially backed away where the wipers continue to hold the upper from slacking back while the adhesive sets into holding condition.
It is to be understood that while an adhesive-coated binder or its equivalent i'sused and while the adhesive is preferablyiheated to make it stick, as herein set forth, this invention is only limited as required by the claims when the claims are construed as broadly as the prior art will permit; and furthermore it is understood that whilethe binder is shown as shaped and adapted for the described use in making welt or turn shoes, it will, for use in making McKay shoes, be suitably modified in. shape and adapted within this invention to the conditions of the work to which it is to be applied.
Theimprovement in methods of ma king shoes herein disclosed is claimed in an application filed concurrently herewith, Ser. No. 711,648, and the improvement in shoes produced by the use of the invention herein claimed comprises the subject-matter of application-Ser. No. 802,157, filed Nov. 20,1913 as a division of said application Ser. No. 711,648.
Having explained the nature of the 1 presentinvention, I' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
As an article of manufacture a toe binder comprising a long narrow strip or band of continuous material coated on its back with a material that is normally nonadhesive and is capable of being caused by increase of heat to soften and to fasten the binder to the overworked upper on the margin ofthe bottom of a lasted shoe and by the reduction of heat to stilfen and prevent the upper from slipping under it at any point.
2. As an article of manufacture a toe binder for use in. securing in lasted position theupper materials around thetoe of a sole or innersole. havingran upstanding lip or shoulder'and comprising along narrow strip or band: ofcont-inuous material adapted to beappliedon edge againstthe upper ma terial lasted against the lip or shoulder of the sole, said binder being coated on its back. or the-side which is presented to the upstanding upper with a material that is normally non-adhesive and is capable of being caused by the action of heat to fasten the binder to the overworked upper on the margin of the bottomlof a lasted shoe.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTE-URL. RUSSELL.
