To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN J. Foss and JAMES D. MAYBERRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Chairs and Adjustable Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which we have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.

The subject of the present invention is a combination chair and adjustable ironing board, the novel features of which include a simple means of adjustment for the height of the ironing board, together with a seat or chair upon which may be placed a basket for receiving the finished clothes.

Another advantage of our improved construction is in the compactness of the device when folded, both the board and the chair folding within the sides of a rectangular open frame, which is usually disposed vertically against a wall.

The object of the invention is a simple and neat appearing device occupying little space and having a wide use.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

An ironing board 4- is provided having a transversely disposed strip or stop 5 upon the upper surface adjacent the inner end, the stop 5 being )ted to abut against any desired one of the stops 3 when the board is placed in a horizontal position, thus holding the inner end of such board in the position indicated in Fig. 1, that is, flush with the rear surface of the stop 3. The board is also provided with a second transverse stop (3 upon its lower side intermediate its ends, and means for retaining the board in a horizontal position are provided, consisting of an open U-shaped supporting member 7 which engages behind the stop 6 beneath the board and has its upper ends curved incertain of the stops 3 on the frame 1.

The adjustment of the board for various elevations will be apparent from the foregoing description. The board is first inserted beneath the stop 3 at the desired elevation, the loop 7 then being adjusted to engage other stops 3 at the right height to maintain the board horizontally. l/Vhen the board is not in use its inner end may be swung downward and the board 4 may be placed vertically within and between the side members 1 of the rectangular frame, the loop 7 then tending by its weight to maintain the board in such position.

In ironing it is a matter of some convenience to have near at han d means for receiving a receptacle for the clothes that are being ironed, and for this purpose I provide a hinged seat 8 which is pivoted to the side members of the frame below the ironing board, the seat being provided with a suitable supporting leg 9. This seat may be swung upwardly into the position indicated in Fig- 2 when its upper end will incline slightly toward the rear of the frame, thus causing the seat to maintain the position by its own weight. It will of course be apparent that the seat may be used at any time and is not limited to the specific use referred to.

Other modes of applying the principle of our invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as revidedthe means stated by any of the follow ing claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed. a

We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention 1. In an adjustable ironing board, the

combination of a standard adapted to be disposed vertically and having a plurality of spaced horizontal stops, an ironing board adapted to engage at one end against one of said stops, and a supporting member adapted to removably engage upon one of said stops above the inner end of said board, said member also removably engaging said board intermediate the ends of the same.

"2. In an adjustable ironing board, the combination of an open rectangular frame adapted to be disposed vertically and having a plurality of spaced transverse stops,

an ironing board adapted to engage against the side of said frame and beneath one of such transverse stops, and a supporting member adapted to removably engage upon one of said stops above the innerend of said board, said member also removably engagboard also having a stop upon its lower side intermediate the ends, and an open loop member adapted toremovably engage beneath said board against such stop thereon and having inturned ends adapted to also removably engage loosely over one of such transverse stops on said frame.
