ELECTRIC-CABLE HANGER.
Spe'cicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
To all whom tm/1y concern.:
Be it known that we, MAURICE BLUMEN- THAL andA BLEECKER S. BARNARD, citizens of the United States, and residing, respectively, at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, and New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Cable Hangers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hangers or supports for electric cables designed for use in subway railways and other underground constructions, and which may also be used in connection with elevated railway or other overhead construction.
ln the construction of subway railways and other underground constructions of various kinds and classes, in or under streets or other highways, where electric cable conduits have previously been placed, it is fre quently necessary to destroy conduits through which the electric cables have been passed, and support said cables during'the process of constructing the subway, temporarily, until the subway or other underground construction is approximately completed, at which time the cables are again placed in conduits and the use of the hangers dispensed with.
ln the above use of the hangers it will be seen that they are only a temporary expedient, but our improved hangers may also be used in suspending electric cables under elevated railways, or under or in connection with elevated structures of other kinds and classes in which use, the said hangers are permanently employed and the object of this invention is to provide improved hangers of the class specified which may be conveniently used for any of the purposes named whenever and wherever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanyingdrawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;-
Figure l is a View showing the use of one of our improved hangers; Fig. 2 a plan view of the hanger detached; Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modification, and; Fig. 5 line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the practice of our invention, as shown 1n igs. l to 3 inclusive, we provide a hanger device a which is trough-shaped, or tubular, 1n form in cross section land open longitudinally of the top thereof, and provided at the ends with circumferential flanges a2, and said device is also provided between the end flanges a2 with circumferential ribs a, any desired number of which may be employed. 'l he hanger device a is preferably made of sheet metal and may be exactly, or approximately, semi-circular in form in cross section, so as to permit the electric cables to be placed therein, and removed therefrom when desired, conveniently and easily. A
ln Fig. l we have shown at c an overhead support consisting of a framework of beams, one of .which is shown in cross section at c2, and in the use of the hanger device a, wires, cords or ropes CZ are connected with and suspended from the overhead support c and passed around the hanger device, as clearly shown, or said wires, cords or ropes may be formed into loops through which the hanger device a is passed.
In practice, the hanger device a is first passed around the cables b, or said cables are placed in said hanger device, which latter is then suspended from the overhead support c, and it, will be understood, that any desired number of these devices may be employed in a subway construction, or in connection with an elevated railway. or other overhead structure of any kind. The object of the circumferential flanges a2 is to prevent the wires, cords or ropes al from slipping off of the hanger device, or said hangervdevice from slipping through the loops formed by said wires, cords or ropes, and said flanges also strenghen the hanger device, and the circumferential ribs a3 also strengthen the device, and also serve to prevent the same from slipping through the suspending loops, or said suspending loops from slipping longitudinally of the hanger device.
The form of hanger device shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is the same as that shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, except that the circumferential ribs a3 are omitted, and the top side edges or the hanger device are provided .a cross section on the with projecting flanges a4 having spaced notches or recesses a5 through which the wires, cords or ropes d, or the loops formed thereby, pass, and these notches or recesses a5 also serve to prevent said Wires, cords or ropes from slipping longitudinally of the hanger device, and the flanges a4 operate in connection with the end ilanges a2 to strengthen said device.
From the foregoing description, it Will be seen that our improved hanger device or devices are approximately trough-shaped inv cross section, and they may be made of any desired length, and any preferred transverse dimensions, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A hanger device of the class described which is trough-shaped or tubular in form in cross section and open longitudinally of the top, and provided with circumferential end fianges between Which are lspaced circumferential ribs.
2. A hanger device ofthe class described,
tubular in form in cross section and open at the top and being provided at its ends with circumferential flanges and between said ianges with annular beads, and the top side edges of Which are provided With outwardly directed flanges having notches or recesses.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as four invention We have signed our names inpresence of the subscribing Witnesses this 21st day of March 1914:.
