T0 all rwhom t may concern Be it known that I, VALTER BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster Groves, Missouri, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Stay-Bolt-Cutter Clamps, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings. forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section illustrating my improved clamp in position on a stay bolt cutter. Fig. 2 is a front view of my improved clamp in position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to metal working tools and specifically to a device adapted to hold the tool and work in proper relationship.
Specifically my invention relates to a form of clamp adapted for use on a stay bolt cutter of the form claimed in my copending application No. 744.966. or similar tool, the purpose being to hold the stay bolt against rotation, or longitudinal displacement relative to the cutter.
The principal ohiect of mv invention is to provide a clamp of the sort described which is economical to manufacture and which is simple and easv to operate. strontr and positive in its action and not liable to get out of order.
Other objects of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out or will be obvious upon an understanding of the device and its operation.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the barrel of a stay bolt cutter or similar tool in which are carried the cutters 2 which are suitablv actuated by power driven mechanism. and in which barrel is an axially disposed work receiving portion 8. It is obvious that these cutters may be for the purpose of severine" the stay bolt 4 of a boiler, or for shaping or otherwise working upon other bar like or tubular pieces. It is obvious that rotation of the cutters 2 has the tendency to rotate the stay bolt also, or if the stay bolt were held against rotation. the tendency would be to longitudinally displace the tool upon the stay bolt. As a means of preventing such action, and of positively securing the work and tool in the proper relationship, I provide a clamping device which comprises a tripod orframe member 5 which is secured to the barrel 1 in any proper fashion so as to rotate thereon. As shown, the connection .consists of a clamping ring 6 secured to the barrel and carrying the stationary bearing ring 7, which forms a rearward abutment for the framev member, and one or more securing rings 8 which are threaded or clamped upon the barrel 1 and form forward abutments for the frame member. The frame member is provided with a rearwardly extending skirt portion- 9 which covers and protects the bearing and rear abutment, and an annular depending portion 10 which travels intermediate the rear and forward abutment members. rl`he annular depending portion 10 carries a movable bearing ring 11, which, with the stationary bearing ring 7, form runways for the ball bearings 12. The frame member has forwardly projecting leg portions 14, preferably three in number, the forward extremities of which are grooved to providevthe proper guideways for the clamping plate 15. The guideways are formed so as to prevent longitudinal displacement of the clamping plate 15 relative to the frame member 5, but so as to permit a limited sliding movement which is in a vertical direction when the device is in a position as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The clamping plate 15 has a mounting 16 for clamping screw 17. and an expansion spring v18 is interposed between the mounting 16 and one leg 14 of the frame member. The tendency ofv the spring 18 is to press the clamping plate 15 in an upward direction as illustrated, yor more specifically in a direction transverse of the longitudinal aXiis of the work receiving portion 3 of the too The clamping plate 15 is provided `with an aperture 19 which lies in front of the work receiving portion 3 when' the clamping plate 15 is sufficiently depressed against the influence of spring 18. The tendencv of spring 18, however.- is to displace clamping plate 15, as above described, so as to throw the aperture 19 out of alinement with the work receiving' portion 3. Aperture 19 may be of any proper contour to accommodate the piece upon which the tool is intended to work. The form herein illustrated is designed for use on a stay bolt cutter and consequently is provided with an irregular shaped aperture of size and form such as to insure its making contact with a stay bolt inserted through the aperture and into the work receiving portion 3. The clamping plate at the edge of the aperture 19 is cut with a series of serrations 20 which operate after the fashion of an alligator or pipe wrench to bite into the piece being worked upon, and prevent its rotating.
The operation of the device is as follows: rllhe stay bolt or other piece to be Worked on is inserted through the aperture 19 and into the Work receiving portion 3. lVhen the cutters 2 are thrown into engagement with the work it brings the work into alinement on the longitudinal axis ot the tool, thereby drawing down the clamping plate against the inliuence of spring 18. Spring 18 being thus under tension, it holds the serrations 2O in firm engagement with the work, thereby holding the work against rotation with the tool or longitudinal movement. The tramev and sliding plate may be held against rotation by any convenient means such as by the engagement of the projecting portion of clamping screw 17 with a stationary object.
l am aware that the device herein illustrated is capable of various modifications and changes in detail, and for that reason, I do not intend that the language of the claims be limited to the specific form disclosed.
I claim:
1. In a rotary tool, the combination of cutters, means for moving the cutters into engagement with work presented to the action ot the tool, a clamping device adapted to engage work presented to the action of the cutters, said clamping device and said cutters having relative rotary movement, the construction and arrangement of parts being such that the engagement of the cutters with the work forces the work into engagement with the clamping member, whereby the work is held against movement relative to the clamping member.
2. In a tool of the class described,yrotary cutters mounted to engage work presented to the action of the tool, a clamping member adapted to engage work presented to the action oi the tool, said clamping member being provided with means whereby it may be held against rotation with the cutters, the cutters operating to force the work into engagement with the clamping member, the clamping member being provided with means whereby it retains. the work against movement relative thereto.
8. In combination with a rotary tool, a frame member supported thereon and arranged to permit rotationfofsaid toolindependently thereof, and a spring operated clamping device supported by said trame member and adapted to engage work presented to the action of said tool to hold the same against rotation with said tool.
4f. ln combination with a tool having a rotating cutter, a clamping device supported on said tool and provided with spring pressed means for engaging an article presented to the action of said tool to retain said article against movement with said cutter.
5. In combination with a tool having an axial work receiving portion and a cutter revoluble about the same, a clamping member supported on said tool so as to permit rotation of said cutter independently thereof, said clamping member including means for holding an article placed in said work receiving portion against movement with said cutter, the cutter operating to force the work into engagement with the clamping member.
6. ln a tool having cutters revoluble about a work axis, a clamping member supported on the tool and provided with means adapted to engage work disposed in the work axis of the tool to hold the same against rotation with the tool, the cutters being operable to move work into ope 1ative engagement with said clamping member.
7. In combination with a tool having rotary cutters adapted to operate upon an article disposed in the work axis of the tool, a work retaining device mounted on the tool so as to permit rotary movement oi the cutters independently thereof, said work retaining device including a member movable transversely of the work axis ot' the tool under spring pressure, which member is provided with means for engaging material presented to the action of the cutters.
8. In combination, a rotary tool having cutters operating about a work axis, a trame rotatably mounted on said tool, a sliding plate supported on said frame. said sliding plate being provided with work engaging means, and yielding pressure means for holding said sliding plate in operative position to hold the work against movement relative thereto.
9. ln combination, a rotary tool having an axial work receiving portion and cutters operating about said work receiving portion, a frame mounted on said tool and movable relatively independently of said cutters, a retaining member supported on said trame and movable across the work axis of the tool, said retaining member having a work receiving aperture adapted to be alined on the work axis ot the tool, and yielding pressure means cooperating with said retaining member adapted to displace the apertured portion thereof from the work axis ot the tool, saidretaining member being provided With means for engaging an article placed in said aperture.
l0. In combination With a tool having rotating cutting members, a clamping member mounted on said tool and having a Work engaging portion positioned in front of said cutting members, said clamping member being spring-pressed to hold the Work against movement relative thereto.
11. In a rotary tool, the combination of ya cutter and a clamping device, mounted for relative rotary movement, said clamping device having a Work engaging portion adapted to engage Work presented to the action of the tool, and means for moving said cutter to render said clamping device e'ective to engage and retain Work presented to the action of the cutters.
12. The combination of a tool, and a clamping device mounted for relative rotary movement, said tool including means for forcing the clamping device into operative position through the medium of Work presented to the action of the tool.
13. Ina device of the class described, a. clamping device adapted to engage work to hold it against movement relative thereto,
. and a rotary cutter adapted to operate upon the Work and hold the same inengagement With the clamping device.
